This upload is a brief highlight of another family operation in a regional area, with the business flourishing in and around Wagga Wagga. The Smallmon name existed in the location a long time ago as a waste service provider, before selling out to Cleanaway, but then two members of the family kickstarted again, emerging as Smallmon Brothers Waste. I understand it was back around 2012 when they established themselves as a local player and things have proven very successful since then, with substantial growth evident even since my visit in 2017. It’s worth checking the company’s website, which lists out the comprehensive services they provide and also features a photo gallery of some current and past fleet members.
Featured here is what was the initial Smallmon Bros front loader, which previously operated next to a MJE FL3 6x4 ACCO. Eventually significant growth in work and small available capacity saw this little single axle get sold off in favour of upgrades to new high capacity 8x4 vehicles. What I can tell you about this 1994 ACCO is that it was originally an Ellwaste domestic collections side loader, as per the cab stripes, but that side arm body was removed and had this grasshopper arms compactor mounted on instead. As for who built this front load unit, how old it actually is and where it came from, I have no bloody idea! There looks to be some decent engineering and structure to it anyway, so doesn’t seem like a random backyard manufacture done in a farmer’s shed.
Short and sweet is what this video is, showing a bin emptying machine I wish I had more of to share, but I’m thankful I was able to score this much! In summary, days earlier I’d made contact with one of the brother owners and called him up on the Wednesday morning to find out where I could catch this particular truck. Luck would have it the run was only small, with the other brother already waiting at the Wagga Showground for the gates to open so he could do the last job. I raced over there to take what I could - a 3m gets dumped, bonus packing action follows and then there’s a little shot of the truck exiting and driving down Urana St. FYI if you check the showground off Urana St in Google street view, there were some cool trucks parked there in 2009!

What an oddball. The single cylinder is such an old school design. Looks almost like something computer generated from a movie

Hey mate, absolute beast of a thing here. Also a very interesting lifter design which i quite like. Is there any chance that you may still have any more old Cleanaway Canberra videos? been keen to see some more, something i have also really been wondering when Cleanaway/Transpacific first started there, based off what i know i believe it somewhere between 1999 and 2002. Would you happen to know anything about that? Cheers

Yes I still have a couple Cleanaway ACT videos to come, one of a single axle MkIV/Hino on garbage and another single axle SPAK/Hino on recycle. The previous Thiess and BFI contracts for garbage and recycling started in Dec 1994, both went for 7 years initially, but they must have been extended for a certain period. I did a rego check on a few Cleanaway Hinos and it shows they were built in Dec 2002, further date info suggests Cleanaway may have taken over collections around June or October 2003 (or somewhere in between). Cheers

@@AussieGarbo Amazing, back in the 90’s did id assume Thiess handled recycle, and BFI garbage? As a matter of a fact on google maps one of the old cleanaway recycle series 2’s was still sitting at the front of the cleanaway yard in August of 2016, completely stripped and everything. Would you be able to upload one of those canberra videos sometime soon? very keen on seeing it. Thanks

Other way around, Thiess on garbage and BFI on recycling. I've been meaning to put up that last ACT footage, can't say exactly when it'll show, but I'll aim to upload both videos together sooner than later.

Sorry mate, only QLD footage I've taken beyond Caboolture was of the Cleanaway trucks in Port Douglas, all of which is now uploaded across two videos, nothing else captured by me that far north. Cheers
