Do you have a smartphone? Do you like planets? Do you have access to a telescope? Well here's how to get "pictures" of planets using your PHONE!
Join me as we capture and process Mars as it races towards opposition in October 2020.

Dude, first one of your videos I’ve seen. I like your demeanor - just relaxed, informative, overall just cool and down to earth. Enjoyed it and sub’d! I am brand new to this, haven’t bought so much as a single piece of equipment yet, just doing a ton of research. Scopes, eyepieces (really like the televue, from everything I’ve read), cameras and other accessories, etc. Looking forward to settling into everything. Gonna go check out some of your other videos! 👍 Have a good one.

Thanks! I just started to become really interested in astro photography and want to try a lot of different ways of doing it, this one was great and did not need a lot (except the high powered telescope then) 😅👍 I have a Celestron CPC 800 I will try in on. I will follow you to see more 👌🙏

Hey man, after years of dreaming about it and generally obsessing over the universe in general (loving the yt channel called SEA btw, check it), I finally got my first telescope - nothing fancy, a Bresser makutsov 100/1400, probably not even a good choice for my budget, haha, but whatever, I freaking bought it and didn't spend that money on stupid sh*t. Anyway, just wanted to say I appreciated the video, especially since the phone adapter that came with the telescope was laughable, so I went and bought a better one, but still - on this first clear night in like a month (Murphy's law for the weather to just be overcast every single night where I live since I bought it, haha) I realised I'm either doing something super wrong, or the adapter is still pretty damn sh*t. Saw your vid and got confirmation on both, but especially on that I need to get a good adapter. Also to finish this novel, I think it's super cool what you said about appreciating what you can see - I got to see some blurry craters on the moon through a window from my light-polluted city apartment and I literally yelled how cool it is to be able to see actual shadows and texture, haha - at least now my cat knows that it's sure as sh*t super cool and my neighbors probably suspect the same thing. Anyway, I hope you're doing great and apologies for the TED talk, lol, just, you know, gotta share good vibes when they're sincere n all that. Be well!

Can you do astrophotography with just your smartphone a good telephoto lens or a (moment lens
@InsertAstroNameHere
@InsertAstroNameHere 2 года назад
Short answer: Kinda. Long answer: not really There are so many variables when it comes to astrophotography. What objects are you shooting? How bright are they? How long of an exposure? For the Moon, a cell phone is more than capable with a telescope and eyepiece just like I have in this video. For planetary, the issue is tracking, and the digital zoom capabilities of the phone’s camera. It doesn’t really “zoom” like a lens, you’re just essentially cropping in real time. For dso, it’s not even worth the headache.

You can align + stack astrophotos using your smartphone by using Eagle Image Stacker, which supports almost all raw images.

Hi thank you for sharing amazing images, I need some help im very new to this i keep trying to image Jupiter and Saturn with my smart phone also through my 200p dobsonian but all I get is overly bright video footage i mean i can see the planet but way to much light glare is this were a filter would do the trick or am I missing something? My eye pieces are the one's that came with the scope

I’m relatively new to imaging planetary objects and feel like this video is a great step as I don’t have a telescope with camera lenses etc therefore I’m not too familiar with the processes shown in the video. So when you say you want to get as many frames as possible in the shortest amount of time, did you just end up only getting one video? If so how long? And does your setup have a sky tracker to track Mars? Because I don’t, so if I video Mars I’m assuming I would manually just have to keep centring the planet again? But then again, like my first question I’m not even sure how long I video it for. If you could help with my questions that would be amazing, thanks very much again

Hi Andrew, and welcome to the Money Black Hole of Astrophotography. So, there are many variables when it comes to imaging. The settings I use will only work for that specific setup and a specific object. Different objects are bigger and smaller and are brighter and dimmer, just like some scopes are bigger and smaller with faster or slower optics. The absolute BEST way to figure out settings is a whole bunch of trial and error, and even then atmospheric conditions will not remain stable night to night, so there will have to be tweaking. If you tell me what your exact setup is currently (or what you’re looking to get in the future) then we can start to fine tune your answers.

Do you have a detailed video on how to remove the white ring around the planet ,if not can you make one
@InsertAstroNameHere
@InsertAstroNameHere 2 года назад
I barely have time to shoot as it is. Lol. There are 2 ways to “remove” it. One way is to not sharpen as much, but then you won’t be able to sharpen hardly at all. The second way would be to save the unsharpened version, save a sharpened version, then just carefully blend the edges of the unsharpened one onto the sharpened one.

Hello...Very nice video sir...I have one query..When I connect smartphone to telescope for photography, how to make sure ur getting maximum light or view through mobile phone...
@InsertAstroNameHere
@InsertAstroNameHere 2 года назад
Sorry for the late reply. The best way I have found was to find/center the planet with the regular camera app, then switch to Filmic to control exposure and capture. You will be able to move the camera mount and see where the planet cuts off on the curvature of the eyepiece. Once that happens, just move the opposite way.

How might one get the photographs from the cell phone into the computer? I am kind of an idiot.
@AcidJurassic
@AcidJurassic 9 месяцев назад
Since no one answered you there is a few options, easiest would be to plug your phone into the computer and transfer the files manually, email the photos and pull it up on your computer or save them to a house hold cloud server to pull up from your computer. hope this helps
@AmatureAstronomer
@AmatureAstronomer 9 месяцев назад
@@AcidJurassic Thanks. I found it was my phone. I bought another phone which would allow me to transfer files, when I plugged it into the computer. And, then I bought a dedicated astro camera (ZWO ASI183mc) and a lap top computer with a flash drive. So, now I take pictures using SharpCap and transfer them onto my PC for processing. My photos still stink, but I am getting better, slowly. Thanks again.
