If ANYONE wants you to sign an NDA, they’re trying to screw you, either literally, financially, emotionally or figuratively. If they really don’t want you to talk about them, they need to behave better. Not force you into silence. Why would they need your silence if the service is not a scam? Don’t sign NDA’s.

Oh man I bought smile direct club, I lied and told them my dentist said I need to return it. They let me I got all my money back. It was painful and didn’t feel right so I wanted my money back. This was two years ago. I can’t believe they screwed people over this bad!!!

I knew people that had used it many years ago. Fast forward a while and my wife is a dental hygienist. She told me never to recommend them to anyone and I asked her why and she told me so many stories of people that had been treated horribly and ended up worse than they started having to seek treatment to correct what they had messed up. It’s really really sad and unfair that places like this are able to operate as businesses, especially under any type of healthcare practice like that

holy SHIT this is literally so infuriating and horrifying. I'm so glad you were able to get your refund and avoid permanent orthodontal/dental damage, but the fact that they took advantage of so many unknowing people is fucking wild. I hope an incredible class-action lawsuit comes up against them and the victims are able to get their money back.

I knew the second I saw these ads that they would mess people up. Invisalign isn’t just plastic retainers, there are also brackets fused onto your teeth that the aligners clip onto. They also have to consider the health of your teeth and dental history, which is a doctor’s job. It’s a medical device for a reason lol

Glad I never got this. My orthodontist stated this as an option, but didn't recommend it. I went with braces and headgear, still have the braces. It sucks that so many people were scammed like this. I honestly never expected this though, never heard about it until now. they did well with their NDAs at least

I got Invisalign aligners on the very aggressive recommendation of my actual orthodontist (they told me if i didn’t my teeth would get so crowded that they would break and fall out) my mouth go so royally destroyed by them- receding gums, chips, cracks, and whole pieces of my teeth breaking off, extreme sensitivity and dozens of cavities (I only had 1 cavity my entire life before this point when i was a child) I told my dentist about it repeatedly and she just told me it was my own fault because i was clearly not flossing enough… I stopped wearing them after the entire front of my canine broke off when i took them put my retainer in for the night. My teeth stopped flaking within a week- its now been 6 months and the sensitivity is gone, my gums stopped receding, and im not in constant pain but im still struggling with getting the cavities under control.

You can say you got scammed tmk. Scammed isn't legally protected term, scams don't even need to be illegal, just deceptive ways to get money. Fruad is term that gotta be careful with/add allegedliies to, that gets into defamation territory. Iirc legal eagle explains this in sone video.

Damn, that sucks. I can understand wanting an easier alternative to full-on braces - had them when I was 13-15/16, and it was no picnic: 4 teeth out, perma-braces then retainer - but providing something that (allegedly) seems to be an alternative, only for customers to then need braces is rough. I am of the opinion that that has many qualities that seem in common with a scam, or at least a potentially defective product.

I get pissed when a company takes $160 out of my bank account so I cant even imagine losing or almost losing $2000... Definitely scummy of them to do this to people. And it's almost always at the worst possible time.

I hate to be that guy, but I could have told you that. I knew they probably would end up getting sued. I had Invisiline Braces (aka one of the legit clear plastic aliner companies). They required you to have your treatment implemented by a dentist they partner with. BECAUSE 1. The aliner mold is more accurate if it's done by someone trained to take dental impressions 2. They have to put enamel dots on your side teeth to keep the aliners in properly (otherwise they might slip around and/or cut your gums). AND 3. You are at increased risk of cavities/dental issues while using aliners. So it's kinda important to have a Dentist you're checking in with as you progress through the stages. Also Invisilne takes at least a year and in most cases 2, because if you go too fast with the adjustments it WILL INDEED cause pain, jaw soreness, and potentially injure your gums. So when Smile Direct was advertising "In as little as 6 months" I was like, bro those folks either have really straight teeth to start with or they mouth gonna be killing them O_o So sorry that a lot of people actually went for this and had no idea. I hope they loose in court so people can get compensation.

I remember getting a clear aligner was literally the LAST thing I did in my teeth straightening journey as a kid. Had the jaw realigners first, then the braces, then the traditional retainer, and THEN the clear aligner, all over the course of maybe 7 - 8 years with constant checkups with the orthodontist. I remember when I started hearing about smile direct club I was like “Shouldn’t there be more to it than jumping straight to a clear aligner?”

So glad you were able to get your wedding payment resolved, that had to be a short eternity of a day omg super sorry that happened to you dude

My wife is a dentist, one of our closest friends is an orthodontist (person who specialises in braces). They both have had so many horror stories for years about these sorts of subscription orthodontics. I'm only surprised its taken this long. The technology of Invisalign is sound but you need people who know what they are doing, and it isn't appropriate for all mouths.

I'm poor and I don't have options, but I've heard of companies fking over people so I didn't get this and I'm so glad 😭

I never had smile direct club but I was scammed by a real orthodontist when I was younger, someone purposefully prolonging treatment to get extra money. It seems like dentists and orthodontists in particular are very hit or miss. It doesn't surprise me that a service in the industry was very scammy. The orthodontist who finished my treatment was a gem tho.

I had braces all throughout my childhood and asked if I could use a retainer instead. The braces where painful, but my teeth never fell out. I feel so bad for anyone who did have teeth fall out, and not even having a professional to talk to for help and comfort. From what I have seen alone, this should result in them being criminally charged for medical malpractice!

Go to a real orthodontist, they may have insight that your dentist doesn’t. Aligners with a real orthodontist will probably cost around $3k-$4k but at least you won’t lose any teeth 😳

I never did it bc I never had the money for it, and I never signed up for it but I kept getting emails from them saying I was able to get their services. I'm glad I've never done it bc my teeth are already jacked up badly

This kind of scam is an effect of the accelerating privatization, commoditization, financialization, and deregulation of everything -- aka neoliberalism. When I had to buy private healthcare insurance as an "independent contractor" working as a delivery driver (a separate horror story of Dickensian proportion) I chose the only insurance plan that I could afford and that would cover actual doctor visits. It was an "innovative" model where a single clinic was wholly owned by the small insurance company, so it was the only place I could go to see the doctor and have it covered. Two years after opening, the company went out of business, the clinic shut down, I couldn't get any of my prescriptions refilled anymore, and I was basically just screwed. We need Medicare for All and we need it like 15 years ago.

I totally get why smile direct is so appealing, but as someone who had braces for 5 years and invisalign (with an orthodontist) for 2, I would pick braces 12 out of 10 times. The inconvenience of going in to see a dentist/orthodontist once a month is also the thing that lets you quickly catch and fix problems; same with the type of material - aligners are made months in advance so if you need a change they have to remake those months (like if moving one (1) tooth gives you a crossbite and your 4-6 month fix becomes 2 years...for example). Also, good retainers often require attachments to your teeth to properly/safely move your teeth! Not as many as braces but imho that whole mess was way more maintenance and irritating to deal with day to day than just having braces. Tbh in hindsight I would've just kept the gap lol

my experience with sdc wasn't actually that bad. one of my teeth randomly started to rotate so i went back to the previous aligner for my bottom teeth and continued progressing with my upper teeth. they didn't approve of me doing that but i'm not gonna watch my teeth rotating lol. it was a bit annoying to get them to make new retainers but they did it. i might still get some minor corrections with invisalign and then wired retainers but i'm mostly happy with the results

Honestly, I don't trust any product or brand that uses "influencers" to advertise them. These people aren't using the products, the brands and products always have positive reviews from people who have gotten it for free in exchange for review, and honestly I think "influencers" is such a dystopian term - literally someone who just wants you to buy things so they make money from it, and it's not stuff they care about enough to drop the money on themselves. Plus, a major portion of "influencers" exploit their children or other people in their lives, so not about that or supporting it. If I've heard about something from social media, that's the only red flag I need

Dude, that's WILD that they would just charge you like that and that the customer rep treated you like that. Wow. I got impressions taken by them back in early 2016, but never moved forward with them because I was worried I wouldn't be able to pay, and I'm SO glad they didn't just charge me 2K cause that would have put me in such a bad place financially. Yikes, what a terrible company.

My husband ended up going with smile direct to fix a small gap between his front teeth, and they ended up JACKING up his teeth. The aligners ended up royally screwing up his bite so when he would bite down, his top front teeth would touch his lower front teeth. This resulted in him chipping his front teeth when he would chew. Long story short, he now has Invisalign (that we paid for) for the next two years to fix the mess smile direct created

My mom uses a similar thing (plastic liner/braces) But, her set was created through an actual dentist, and will take a minimum of a year to get through treatment (though her's is slower due to limited time wearing the braces) Its been going great for her so far!

i’m from the uk and i used to see the ad of this company all the damn time (on youtube, tv, streaming services, etc) and ngl they seemed very suspicious due to the fact that they’re not really transparent with the prices of their services, until i successfully wasted £10 because they never told me where to send back the clay thingy and had to go to the place to get it checked out. luckily i didn’t spent any more there seeing how badly they messed up with their customers.

To be honest those at home clear aligner you need brackets attached but they don’t put brackets on your teeth. Invisalign you get brackets glued to your teeth so that your teeth can move properly

I was born with only 7 adult teeth under my set of baby teeth, and at 24 years old I still have most of my baby teeth though they crack easy (like wavy lays are the devil apparently) and the roots of the bottom front are all showing; Sadly it's always been glaringly obvious due to living in America the "available" options are completely unavailable to me and even the "cheap" options are impossible. I have been told it will be 5-10 thousand dollars per tooth by more than one dental office. I am sorry tooth issues are such a prevalent problem here. (3 cracked teeth so far if anyone's curious) stay safe everyone!

Yes it is a scam. When something says its free...just pay for 'postage' its a scam. I did it, and they have access to your credit card so they take what they want. Mine was like $80. Yep... a scam Why arent these scammers in jail??

You should find an orthodontist who does invisalign. I had crowding, but they were still able to use it on me, and they do it in an actual doctor's office and do scans and everything there. Three years later and no issues with it. Worth looking into if you're still interested.

Wow, I consider myself very lucky. It actually worked for me without having any damage. I finished my process 4 years ago. My teeth aren't perfectly straight but very close. My teeth were really messed up before, so I was very happy with the results I got, and the price. At the time I got mine, there was no info online about how terrible the company was.
