As a cisgender queer person who heavily relies on science (the methods, not blind trust in any shittily done study) to make sense of the world (autist), I am obligated to smack down the idiots who claim it's some fake prefix "the rainbow mafia" invented. They fallicouslly call "cis" a slur: because they use "gay" and "trans" as slurs: not phenotype descriptives. So they think when they and other cis people are addressed as "cis": they tellingly react as if the word is a derogatory prajorative when it isn't.

As far as I know, avoiding personal/possessive/etc pronouns and referring to the person by name only is the government recommended way to address NBs in Germany. I mean, I'm not 100% sure it's government recommended but I've heard that it is in a few places.

I have two friends who prefer no pronouns, both of them have very short names that can easily stand in for a pronoun :) it's pretty cool

That's a thought, but as a great reader I find the difficulty huge - at this point. It's already harder writing romantic scenes involving multiple characters with the same singular pronoun than with one he and one she; one they may not be too bad but two (or more) theys multiplies the difficulty. Perhaps the YA authors will solve the difficulty soon and lead the way.

Found study saying some transgender people can have phantom genitalia just as amputees can have a phantom limb. Found images of really well passing trans people. So even if it was transmedicalist at first, it helped. I think when talking about intersex you need to know about every aspect you can think of that's nonbinary, a way to physically change it and a reason someone would like their body nonbinary or changed. Or else most transphobes will say intersex doesn't count. You need to know details about intersexion. You can't just say "it's a spectrum" to transphobes and have them trust you. They also might think youre being inconsistant and mixing up sex and gender. Without giving them charts of ambiguous genitalia they'll think you're being wishy washy about an imaginary fluidity you're projecting onto real life.

@@seto749 I'm not sure about YA authors, but some academics have used a novel, gender-neutral pronoun since the 1980s-- ze (sometimes written xe, but pronounced the same). The pronouns are ze, zem, and zir (subject, object, and possessive, respectively). In her recent series of sci-fi best-sellers, author Becky Chambers uses the 'x' variants, xe, xem and xir, as the pronouns for her gender neutral alien species. Frankly, it is an elegant solution to the problem and creates no new problems. However, the novel pronouns have never resonated with the larger public, and the sometimes confusing and awkward use of 'they' is probably going to be around for a long time, frustrating grammarians and anyone interested in smooth and clear communication. That being said, language change is generally organic rather than planned, and many people viewed the academic variant as being forced on language users from outside. Youths, quite unaware of the academic variant, are the ones who ultimately decided to use "they" (shifting the use of 'they' as an indefinite pronoun to a use as a definite pronoun), and I don't think this choice is going to lose momentum any time soon. However, you might want to experiment with ze (or xe) in your writing. In my own experience reading Becky Chambers' first book (The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet), the xe pronouns were awkward for the first chapter, but after that, they flowed easily, communicating a clear and unambiguous singular, gender-neutral identity.
