Master System version wins easily. The main feature of the game is the 2 simultaneous players. The NES version should be called "Alone Dragon".

Technos always upgrade the moves and smooth out physics when porting to nes, its the only versions that run 60fps and has the best collision detection.

best way to hearts in nes is punch and move. You can get all 7 hearts on the first screen, but most people probably know.

The Master System version is leaps and bounds ahead of the NES. What I wanted was a game that was as close to Arcade perfect as possible, and Sega delivered.

Great review, very thorough. As a kid I used to argue endlessly about which was better as I had it on NES and a neighborhood kid had it on SMS.
@stradlemonkey444
@stradlemonkey444 12 лет назад
I had the SMS, the rest of the neighborhood NES. They had a 1 player Double Dragon with muddy graphics and altered levels. I had 2 player Double Dragon with great, bright graphics and levels that followed the arcade perfectly. That is something SMS deserves more praise for: accurate arcade ports. sure the graphics weren't arcade perfect, but level design was! Shinobi, Vigilante, DD, Time Soldiers, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, R-Type, Choplifter, RASTAN! (my favorite), Rampage...

I've played both and the SMS version absolutely sucks. Such bad hit detection and enemies take ages to die. The NES versions is way better.
@pliniomsann
@pliniomsann 4 года назад
@@Syklonus this is because you don't know how to play. Hit detection is good in the right place and time. NES version not even give you all moves since the beginning. And those platforms to jump, uugghhh... I could accept the dark colors and platforms, but being a Single Dragon without the moves... sucks... when I was a kid, my friends had NES and came to my house to play DD on the SMS (even when they had the NES version). Nobody cared for the NES version... and now I have to see americans saying it's better... tss tss

Once again, great vid, Rin and friend. Hope RMC gets this on the site soon for the GoNins to check out! :) I love the random word bubbles that show up. It would've been easy to overuse them or underuse them but it's just right and they always brought a smile to my face when you did use them. Good stuff, I'm glad you got tied into GoNintendo or else I may never have found your guys' stuff!

I liked the Sega version better for three reasons: 1) Two player co-op (I use to play the game with my brother back in the day) 2) Unlimited continues for the first three missions (you could have a LOT of fun screwing around). 3) NO platforming sections (it was a pure beat em up, like the arcade). I STILL like the Sega version better. Granted, I will agree that the hit detection for most attacks is weak (except for the jump kick. That attack ALWAYS worked). NES version has better hit detection

Sms was so cool and underrated. I wish I still had mine. Double dragon was one of the only games my sister would play with me. The only reason my sister and I knew about sms was we bought one at a yard sale. We actually thought it was a Sega genesis because it had genesis controllers and neither of us had ever played a genesis only Nintendo.

I like how you used the sound of the SMS port with the FM-Chip installed! Though an expensive upgrade since it can only happen through modding, it sound better than the Genesis version. I know, that port was unlicensed, but it's still worth noting for looking/playing closest to the arcade.

One thing that I really liked about the sega mastersystem is that it had RGB output through it's 8 pin mini DIN connector out the back. Plug in an SCART cable and plug that into an adaptor to convert it to component (or just stay with the SCART if you are lucky enough to live somewhere that SCART TVs are common) and you have the best damned clarity you can get with an analog setup. Not to mention Space harrier 3d was a very fun game.

The North American perspective on the 8-bit generation is so different from the Australian one - here the Master System and Mega Drive were massively dominant, nearly everyone I knew with a console had the SMS and the one friend with an NES didn't have Double Dragon, so the SMS version was very much the one I grew up with.

I’ve gotten to the point where I can consistently beat the NES version and usually with no deaths or one death. But every once in awhile the RNG of the wall section will jack me up. But I’ve been wanting to try other versions of the game besides the arcade version and the NES version. So I’ll have to check this out. It’s crazy how many different versions of this game exist and how wildly different they actually are.

Double Dragon is one of those old franchises so popular that it once spawned toys, comics, a movie and a Saturday morning cartoon; all of which were fairly bad. The game itself was however the opposite, and was one of the stand out titles of the “beat ‘em up” boom of the 1990’s. Due to the graphical prowess of the Sega Master System itself, this version of the game was almost as good as the original arcade version of the game, and walked circles around the NES version.

I don't think there are any matches where the NES versions don't come out on top. Honestly, regardless of how faithful or unfaithful to the arcade these ports were, the NES had the most enjoyable versions of all 3. It sounds almost blasphemous to say, or even think it, but I even think the NES versions are the definitive Double Dragon titles > the arcade versions! Double Dragon II on NES is just insurmountable imo as the best DD of it's time and one of the best NES games ever, to boot...
@zombiejlt1
@zombiejlt1 10 лет назад
I grew up with both so I like both but for different reasons. The controls are better on the NES version and the hit detection was more accurate, but the playability goes to the SMS version. Also the SMS wins with the co-op option.

4:58 If I remember correctly, it was just because of coloring/palette issues with the NES hardware. This also explains the lack of simul-2 player in the main game, but don't quote me on either of these.

ojideagu the NES version was clunky at points, but it wasn't crap, and saying the original version is better than the 8-BIT PORTS is more Asinine than Michael Bay making shit movies out of loved cartoons, its just makes you look stupid. of course the Arcade one is better, it came first and i'm sure the arcade cabinets had superior tech inside it compared to the NES and SMS.
