Good video, thank you Clayton. I changed my boots today thanks to the video. My mower boots had same part numbers. I bought them at a Snapper dealer shop locally. The boots look just like the original ones, black rubber, unlike your new boots. My snapper was 'given' to me about two weeks ago. It's was sitting outdoors in the weather for a couple of years, so I will be needing all the help I can get. Keep the video's coming. A word of advise to all your fans, if someone 'gives' you a mower, have a can of wasp and hornet spray handy. I learned the hard way haha.
Yeah in looking online I found several different boots for these mowers. These happened to be cheaper. If you notice my video on the series 18 it has 2 different boots that look just like these. Watch out for them bees good luck on your Snapper!
I just got given a Snapper Series 23. No wasps or hornets in mine, but needs new boots, a new drive belt, and when I pulled the drive belt cover there was one hell of a mouse nest under there! Looks like a whole family was living in there. Fortunately they must have jumped out while it was on the trailer to come home.
A friend showed me a soap solution way of immobilizing wasps....carefully with slow deliberate movement, spray with a pretested spray pattern. Knocks them right down. I like 10 to 1 water/dish soap. Keep spraying till they're all flopping in agony. Then you can kill them at your leisure. Death is more merciful...
I enjoyed your show! Your voice reminded me of my beloved Picayune brother-in-law. :) I am about to tackle this task on my Snapper restoration. Thanks.
AFTER removing the wheel hubs, hand sand the paint/rust off the axle areas where the hubs were mounted, clean, then put grease or Vaseline on the clean metal axle BEFORE removing the fenders where you won't damage the inner bearings or seals as you pull the fenders off, if you don't do this you can damage the inner bearing sleeve and the seal as you pull the fender off over the sharp edges around the drilled cross hole on the axle, when you remount the wheel hubs generously cover the axle with ANTI-SEIZE where next time will be effort free. I learned the hard way.
Same here. After using penetrating oil, heat, and a couple pullers, I finally had to resort to cutting the wheel flange off. They can be a pain to budge
I just used a coarse file to remove the high spot around the tapered pin hole...but anything to seal the moisture out YES ...not that close a tolerance fit on mine.
thanks to you i can take care of two problems at the same time, the tubes and the bushing in the side cover is worn bad on mine, thanks to you,its gonna be a piece of cake, thanks again
👍Good stuff. Really like that engine too! My old 1988 28" Snapper RER needs another engine. Still running but just sits in garage. The old 8HP is a knockin and drinkin oil fast😂 (SUBd) 🇺🇸✌️
Thanks Clayton! (That's my son's name, too.) I'm just about to replace a rear boot on mine, and after watching how much work it was to replace that inner boot, I think I'll just replace the outer one which is torn. If the inner one ever goes, I'll deal with pulling all those linkages and everything then!
Come on man, I've got one arm, and I'm doing it!!! Not much more work. Besides you already did the hard work getting the little beasty on it's backside
Brian, check out Jims fix it channel, he removes the other side and leaves all the other stuff in place the shafts are removed from the left side (viewed from the rear) give it a look and see if you find it less hassle?
Thank you SOO MUCH. I wondered why there was so much tension on the cable...DUH!!! 6:29 AND I'm FIGURATIVELY SMACKING MY HEAD...THANKS FOR EDITING Subscribed! And I didn't have to watch the schtick on Taryl's....LOL
Thanks for watching! Good luck on your mower, glad to help, that's why I started making and uploading videos. Sorry I don't have a tripod laying around here, but if someone wants to donate one that will work with my phone, feel free to donate it.
The plastic boots don’t last as long as rubber boots do. If you set mower back on two 2x4 you will be able to get at the bolt without laying the mower back down.
Thanks for the info. I'm about to do this exact project so this is great. You may want to consider a tripod. The info was great but that camera bouncing around gave me nausea.
I have a problem with my rider snapper mod E331518KVE The disc in gear is blocked while in neutral it turns. The gears are engaged, but the wheels do not move, only by pushing the vehicle by hand thanks to the help ti seguo dall'Italia.
Thanks Clayton, great video. I have a question for you. My 28" one day started getting harder and harder to put into gear, and eventually the lever broke, put a new one on and surely, she would not go into gear at all and started bending the shift lever again. I could barely get it to go in first parked it, and started using my JD. This was last year and just now getting back to fix it to give to my daughter. I figured I had to take the wheels off and proceeded to take the pin (bolt) out of axle, removed the nut but could not get bolt to budge. Never been taken apart. Put the nut on and hammered it with a rubber hammer and regular hammer but froze solid. Just have to keep after it. I'll get it out. But as I was doing all that and up on its back. I realized that the shift lever had come loose and would move easily through the gears but still a little hard into reverse. Do you think I need to dig deeper into the gear box and see if it needs some maintenance inside? Also do you have a video to help in adjusting the park brake? Sorry so long and thanks , Xavier
+Arnold Farphunougin Thanks for watching. I wouldn't think the gearbox would cause that issue. If it was mine I'd take off the linkage to the primary gear case. Then you could try moving the shifter and the gear case separately, the gear case slides, which should give you an idea what is binding up. You also may want to check to see if your clutch is disengaging properly if it's not it would make it hard to shift. I wouldn't think you'd need to remove the wheel to check this but if you must penetrating oil will be your friend if it hasn't been apart recently. If I was a betting man I'd bet your clutch is adjusted too close to the drive disc probably from the cable stretching it would probably explain your parking brake issues too.
You probably got it fixed by now but for others who may have same problem, I experienced the same with my 28''. I corrected my stuck shift by disassembling the shift handle and removed the spring it connects to. Mine has a flange bushing at each end, made of vinyl. The vinyl bushings were damaged and I replaced them. My shifting problem was solved. Hope this helps some one. By the way, I used a 'C' clamp to compress the spring, and a carpenter's long clamp to reassemble.
HUB? Few taps with the hammer... Loosen this up... Pull this tire one handed... Now if your lawn mower hasn't been taken apart forever... THIS WILL PROBABLY BE A PAIN IN THE BUTT. Clayton, this was in fact a modern day prophesy. Had to eventually cut the hub off. Ha
Sorry I don't have an answer for that one. Both of the Kohler equipped Snappers I've delt with take the same oil filter which can be cross referenced to NAPA and a Motorcraft. I give the part numbers in my oil change video.
Great Video, but for all the trouble to disassemble , I would go with the best quality made boot that would last , than to go through this again , just sayin.
Awesome video man thanks!!! Anyone who gets sick watching a video should take some Dramamine for the motion sickness and realize they just need to shut up and learn something or go away! man I get sick of chronic judgmental complainers it could be the perfect video they would still find a problem. Anyway great video thanks you made my work so much easier.
HUGE mistake using the plastic grey boots, been there done that, they fail with very few hours on them, I made a mistake in buying dozens of them before I tried them, it's such a pain doing this I would NEVER use any boors except the factory ones.
Thats my thought....they dont rotate....only do their accordian thing when you shift gears. How could organic based rubber outlast synthetic plastic? Everyone says the rubber ones are better but it doesnt seem like that would be the case. I'm installing some grey plastic ones that say Taiwan on them LOL here we go with the longevity test
Ha ha! You got jokes! I bet ol' Mike and his family appreciate you making fun of him just as much as you'd appreciate me making fun of on your family members...maybe your mother? Anyways let he who is without sin cast the first stone... Have a nice day! The over 200 people who have hit the thumbs up on this video would disagree with you.
As I suggested to the other fella, feel free to donate me a tripod!! As for my "shade tree mechanic style" Lawn mower still going strong over 2 years later!
