Many enthusiasts fear the demise of the internal combustion engine, especially those who love their sports cars. But is that fear justified? Perhaps its a sign that a company like Caterham, manufacturers of what many believe is the ultimate driver's car, the Caterham Seven, have decided to show a concept of what they think will be the right direction for them to head towards in an electric world. We get up close and personal with the Caterham Project V to find out what its all about and whether enthusiasts should be concerned or delighted.

Can I be the first to say I think its brilliant before we get all the 1000 km range/horsebox towing comments? I really hope they can pull this off.

Are we really that young, or has it been ages ago, that we can't remember that Tesla's first generation Roadster weighed 2,700 lbs, did 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, and had a 240 mile EPA range rating?

Not at all. In fact one of the first videos we did on AutoEV was on the fact that we felt the Tesla Roadster was a future classic.

"The Project V's power comes from a 55-kWh lithium-ion battery pack connected to a singular 268-hp mounted at the rear axle. Caterham claims a 0-62 mph time of under 4.5 seconds, a top speed of 143 mph, and a maximum range of 249 miles on Europe's WLTP cycle." This does not sound very promising.

This is not a GT car, it will all be about handling, fun and a quick weekend day out.
