Snitches: How often do people cooperate in federal criminal cases? 

A relative of mine was facing a potential 7 year term in a non-violent case and cooperated fully with investigators. This was a victimless crime that involved a group of people that he belonged to. As a result of his cooperation he ended up with a term of a year and a day in prison. The judge in his case actually cut 15 months off of the lowest recommended sentence in his case and he was able to serve his time in a federal prison camp instead of a higher level facility. Thanks to the first step act he actually spent only 7 months in custody before being released to a halfway house and eventual home confinement. Seven MONTHS instead of 7 years. I would say his cooperation was well worth it! The thing is when the feds go after you they ARE going to get a conviction and whether prosecutors ask for the maximum or the minimum is going to be almost totally up to you. One other thing, as part of his plea deal a number of other charges against him were dropped, charges that would have added years to his sentence.

Can a defended appeal on something that the prosecutor, stated that had happened 15 years ago but the judge used the passed drug cases in the past history to give a higher sentence
