The fuel costs SO much in Washington because it is a very blue state. Most of the higher cost is due to insanely high taxes on that fuel. In fact, Washington has just about the most expensive fuel in the US…all while being refined at locations less than an hour from where you were buying it…🤔

I had a 7.3 Power stroke and I remember when the prices flipped. When the EPA demanded ultra low Sulfur diesel it increased refining costs. Then the DEF requirements changed the costs again. Also there is higher road use taxes because of OTR drivers using diesel. Stay safe in the snow country, we love your adventures!

According to our political ruling class, low gas prices are the result of the current POTUS. High gas prices, OTOH, are the result of everything but the current POTUS. Makes perfect sense to me.

I survived the great historic snowstorm of 1978 in northern Michigan. 25 plus feet of snow. I no longer love the snow as I’m older.

Trust me, I am German and have traveled a lot in Germany, but 95% of what you have shown of this city founded by Germans has nothing to do with Germany. Nothing at all. 😄

In not a fan of diesel prices, either. But where you are, they're way high!! (I just saw $2.91 gas, $3.68 diesel here) Your van should be more fuel efficient than an equivalent gas vehicle. What I've done to figure it better is to compare dollars per mile than mpg. I do this to compare my vehicles. E.g 4runner about 16c / mi, promaster 14-15c /mi.

Welcome to Stevens Pass! The only far north regularly traveled pass through the PNW before they built I-90 and created Snowqualmie Pass. Some great snow pack out there this year.

Is it actually a stupid stereotype that USA Americans don't drive winter tires, only all-weather tires? This question is not meant to be offensive, but in so many videos you see Americans who obviously drive with summer tires in the snow.

Diesel is a component of oil that is made when gasoline is extracted, so it is generally made in proportion to gasoline. Thus, diesel cost is very sensitive to demand, since in general they can't up production (since it's tied to gas production). Heating fuel that people use to heat homes is actually diesel gas, so demand always spikes in winter time, and prices spike as well. (Tip, if you are running short in heating fuel for your home, and don't want to buy the 100 gallon minimum from suppliers, you can just get 5 gallons of diesel from a gas station, it's the same thing.)

Diesel fuel is made using a hydrocarbon mixture that is a byproduct of the distillation of crude oil. It is denser than gas. A byproduct sounds like it should be cheaper. Stay warm Doc🤗🤗

Gas only gives 20-30mpg, diesel gives 50mpg (in a Volvo 4x4) so extra cost works out cheaper in the long term. Less maintenance costs too IMO. More torque with diesel, particularly in a truck/4x4. Downside, not so quick of the mark and sounds like a tank!

That looks like so much fun. Snowboarding in the back country and essentially getting stranded due to a snowstorm in your home. Come on thats just amazing.

I've been dealing with the diesel issue too...diesel costs less to refine and has been cheaper until the powers that be decided to take advantage of us....on another note, anywhere you are is warm, comfortable and inviting regardless of the conditions! Thanks for sharing! God bless!❤❤❤❤

I would say that other's without your experience and wisdom might have been pushed over that eighty foot drop , just by the adrenaline , and never to be seen again . Good job you have enormous amounts of common sense and did not literally take the plunge . The roller coaster was right out of the blue and those shots of you on the beach were a great distraction away from the snowstorm , but my goodness , that meal at the end looked like the kind of meal lumberjacks would woof down .

As with most everything, you can thank D.C. for the more expensive fuel. They mandated ultra low sulfur diesel which takes a lot more refining and hence costs more to produce. The ULSD started in 2006 and has become ever more stringent. $4.50/6.00 is a rip off btw, $2.50ish for gas and $3.50ish for diesel here in Texas.....sunny and 70 degrees. You get tired of snow, unpack the white swimsuit and head for the Gulf of Mexico.

Under this narrative of WHO they now say diesel is dirty and unhealthy so put the price up here in Britain, but they will continue to put both insurance and fuel up to out price us off the road, Along with promoting EV and reducing speed limits across the board, ,15 minute cities will have top being billed every 15 minutes futher from that city so as to stop travel . Britain is now a nation of second car campers, little do they know what is coming, so my dear beautiful women enjoy while you can xx

The West coast has some of the highest motor fuel taxes in the country included in the price of each gallon. Diesel in all states includes 24.4 cents per gallon of Federal tax. Then the individual states add their taxes. Washington has a total of 73.8 cents per gallon (as of January 2022) included in every gallon of diesel. California is even worse at 124.31 cents per gallon. Gasoline taxes are not as bad, but are still pretty high. Washington is 67.8 cents per gallon. California is 86.55 cents per gallon. So you may want to choose your vehicle depending on where you will be traveling.

It isn't just Washington. Diesel was always cheaper here in Michigan also. Now it's at least $1 a gallon more than gas. But, it's still cheaper than where you are. Currently here gas is $2,85 - 2.99 and diesel is 3.99. You definitely show us some beautiful places in those west coast states, but I'll stay in the eastern US.

Traveling out west us ridiculous because of the gas prices. Most expensive in my area is $3.60, but I've seen it as low as $2.70 at truck stops. That's unleaded. Diesel is around $4 a gallon. Gotta love all those gas taxes!

Cracks me up I almost bought one till I tried to lift the front end , and the riding position back in the day was hilarious all stooped over back killer , engine was a bad mofo as we're most all the triples and that massive 136 x1 1/2 track !!! Good ole days rode my 530 ext for 20,000 miles all stooped over like that !!

diesel has never been cheaper than gasoline as far as I can remember. You might be thinking of E-85 which is subsidized by the govt. That Bavarian place in Washington reminds me of Solvang California.

In the UK we were all brainwashed into buying diesel's as it was better for the environment. As soon as this became the most popular fuel type the price of diesel went up. I believe it is still cheaper to produce diesel than petrol as it is a by-product of the manufacturing process. The difference in price is nothing more than corporate greed. At the moment diesel is the equivalent $8.19 per gallon. Of course Covid didn't help as the brokers had to give fuel away or pay for it to be used/disposed of due to lack of consumption. I guess like everything else we will be paying for Covid for a long time.

I live in up here "da nordern mitchigan eh", and 2 weeks ago we had no snow at all, 1 week ago we had 3 feet of snow, now we've got 2 inches..... In all my 52 years I've never seen a winter as crazy as this year and last year. But we're saving money on the insane heating bills, um, I guess. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Bad I,m thinking....

Hannah! I would be totally scared! I haven't seen anything that steep, and I have been in situations like that where you don't want to chance it! And I certainly think you are smart for looking for a different path knowing that the trail is secluded and you are on your own. I dream of being stranded in ski lodge! (With people booze & food of course!) and you are living it! My other concern was if there is an avalanche with that fresh snow. You should have some way of calling for help if you were in a situation. I totally want to stay at a ski resort with overnight parking!

Snow can be scary sometimes, found myself questioning my life choices while battling a white out in Mich. The high or higher costs for diesel is the tax aimed at the trucking industry, hope you were able to get diesel no.1, it’s winterized.

You asked why diesel is so expensive. Supply and demand. When gas started getting so high people started buying diesel pickup trucks so now there is a big demand for diesel fuel!

Hannah, it is a complex problem of diesel prices, but simply put, its taxes, global crude prices, environmental regulations and refinery runs are the big issues. Crude prices are down now so they are a small part of the differential, but the bigger issue is the crude runs. Right now we in the industry are producing a lot of light "sweet" crudes that lack the long chain hydrocarbons that are commonly refined or cracked down to diesel like fuels that can be blended to form the government regulated fuel. Because there are fewer long chain hydrocarbons, the diesel yield per barrel is lower resulting in less diesel to sell so the price goes up. We have been stopped at drilling on a lot of federal lands for more conventional crudes. The pipeline from Canada that Biden shutdown on day one would have sent very heavy crudes south but it got canceled and so now we in exploration have to ramp up or heavy crude exploration. Taxes and Regulations are really hurting a lot now but those are just fees we pass on at the pump to you which is why the costs of diesel runs up. That is the supply side of the costs issue. On the demand side, there are just a lot more diesel burning trucks on the road and they also contribute to the demand and expanse of the fuel costs. Sorry for the long dissertation. Its hard to explain a complex problem in one sentence. I enjoy your videos Stay warm and keep up the great work.

I can only tell you about diesel in California. Diesel is refined one more time and a hydergine molecule is added in the mix causing the increased cost of the fuel. All that food. I thought you want rock hard abs. Oh well, that can be a spring project.

Yes diesel was cheaper, shortly after buying a diesel car prices reversed and the price keeps going higher. One theory is more people using diesel and the environmentalist want to eliminate diesel cause it pollutes less.
