So I gave Starfield a second chance... 

This is part 1 of ?? in a series of highlight videos from the remaining time I spend playing Starfield.

You know what was striking is that I went from ditching Starfield to get back into Cyberpunk in prep for the dlc and I have never realized just how much people never shut the fuck up as you walk past them, and how thankful I am that they dont in Cyberpunk, everyone minds their own fucking business, as people would irl. And on top of that, when people do speak, it actually means something, it isn't people just vomiting their motivations and emotional baggage at the drop of a hat. Playing Starfield both right after Baldurs Gate 3 and before returning to Cyberpunk just really destroyed any illusions I had that Starfield was anything more than an extremely boring, shallow and mid-tier game.

I love how the legendary titanium deposit "THE HEART OF MARS" is a tiny chunk of ore that is MAYBE enough to make a single novelty coffee mug

Not at all surprised to see that BGS still doesn't understand the point of role playing in role playing games, despite the fact that Obsidian gave them a masterclass lesson in the concept.

It's amazing to me this game is getting so much praise.

The illusion of choice in this game is a joke. after BG3 I'm shocked this game was positively received.

The best part is that it just shines the biggest spotlight on those tweets about the industry standards from BG3s launch.

My takeaway since release is that...damn, I should have picked up BG3 sooner cause I'm having a whole hell of a lot more fun with that.

The best critique of Starfield is: show footage of Starfield. I have seen virtually nothing where I’ve thought “wow that looks fun” or “that’s so well done”. The only thing I’ve seen so far is (a) zero/low g combat and (b) ship customisation, both of which look pretty cool. As for the rest, it’s mid at best, embarrassing at worst. GOTY? Please.

This game has really exposed shills on youtube, there is no way anyone can in good conscience give this game high marks or recommend it after actually playing it.

It's like they put in a text option to choose jail over getting press-ganged, but then never for a second considered that someone would ACTUALLY make that choice instead of going on a wacky space adventure. That's about what I expected, yeah, but it's still disappointing to see it

Sarah told me she felt pressured by Barrett too much lately. Because in my game Barrett had already died during the attack on the lodge days before I wanted to tell her: "Honey, you're confused. Barret died remember?" but that was not a dialogue option. It's probably some random line Sarah brings up but the least thing this game should do is to keep track who is dead and who is alive. It's okay as a looter/shooter but it's not an RPG.

It would not surprise me at all to learn that Bethesda writes their dialogue trees backwards. Meaning they start with a line communicating their desired outcome of the interaction and work backwards, creating 3 different dialogue options that could all be responded to by the response they already have written. It worked ok in 2008, but 15 years later the industry has passed them by.

Obviously a 10/10 experience

Midfield

Nothing in games will annoy me more than having randomquests assigned to me because Peter and Betty are talking about something 3 feet away Like the protagonist is just like “oh yeah, I’ll just get in their bussiness and solve their problem my way and expect them to like it

Lol that Heart of Mars "quest" was pure gold. Fast travel to the other side of the planet and back in a few minutes to pick up a rock. Truly one of the fast travel simulators of all time

The "Illusion of Choice" is frustrating, considering how many quest paths you could take in Fallout 3, or Skyrim. I gave this game the benefit of the doubt, and played through the Main Quest to see when it "gets good". 40 hours in, I uninstalled after I did the Petrov Main Quest on getting the Artifact on the Scrapyard Ship. I wanted to test how the game handled different decisions. Bribing the Mercenaries into telling you information, they said you could release the Aliens in the zoo for a distraction, and use the Cutter to cut the wall behind the vault and take the artifact. Or, you could convince Petrov to show you his collection. Here's the kicker. If you stealth your way through using the distractions and the Cutter, the entire ship gets alerted to your presence the moment you pick up the Artifact. If you convince Petrov to show you his collection, there is no way to persuade him to give it to you. You are forced to take it, which turns him hostile along with the ship. What's stupid is that he is marked as an essential NPC, so you can't kill him. Once his health hits 0, he gives up and lets you take the artifact. Like, WHAT!? Writing team dropped the ball hard on this game. I understand if the fetch quests are linear, but to have the Main Quest be so monotonous and lazy?

8:03 had me dying. Videos like these will hold me over while I wait for a plethora of mods and patches before I jump into Starfield lol

I always knew the RPGs I played missed something. I want every dialog to start with a jumpscare, locked into a face I was not expecting to see, without any transition or anything.

Something that literally never occurred to me in the painful, optimistic 100 hours I put into this game until watching this compilation is that early in the game Bethesda introduced this ship-stealth thing where you drop power to your systems to avoid detection, and then it literally never comes up again. Just chef's kiss game design on display here.

It's really sad how they messed up the most important mechanic of a openworld space sci-fi game. Spaceships only act as a variable in the code to validate if the player is eligible to fast travel to the next "fish bowl". Imagine in Skyrim you can only ride on your horse at ranches and fast travel from point A to B.

fucking hell man, the fast travel and loading screen thing is so sad. I know it would be really hard to do, but at least let us fly in a low orbit or something, like taking off from new Atlantis and seeing everything get smaller would be so nice. I know people will still enjoy the game but it’s just not for me with the exploration and actual travel being setup like that

I never did the heart of mars quest. Some of the funniest quest design I've seen in my lifetime. According to her, hundreds of people go out to this cave and perish, or if thats just a joke, shes sending hundreds of newbies out to this cave to supposedly, with the intentions of wasting their time. But the titanium is sitting there at the front of the cave with nothing else in it. Is the mystery or catch the fact they would even bother to implement such lazy quest design to begin with? Is it trying to be META?

Oh the part that pissed me off is on my playthrough during that same persuasion check. I chose the red one and through RNG it worked. It was so jarring that he's unmovable, but with that one stoke of luck, he's all "Well since you put it that way. " I just rolled my eyes and unintalled

I have nothing related to persuasion and I able to persuade the mini boss pirates to not take my ship, I didn't need to pay the caps talking to that one dude in the video, and later on you persuade some banks robbers which I successfully did also lol. This game is jacked, it's like rolling blind, because I gotten lucky every time.

I’ve long believed that you can learn more critics than yes-men. I appreciate seeing the negative aspects of this game on display. It seems boring and shallow, especially compared to previous Bethesda games, and the lack of basic accessibility features like an FOV slider is bizarre. And no, being able to fix Bethesda’s mistakes with mods doesn’t make the game better; in fact, mods are often proof of a game’s shortcomings.

I can't stand the argument that I have to give a game x amount of hours before it gets good. I only have an undetermined amount of heartbeats, why waste them for 50 hours before something becomes enjoyable, when other games are putting a smile on my face when I boot them up? I can understand getting through a 1 or 2 hour tutorial, but if I'm closing in on hour 3 and I'm not having a good time then I'm out. I'll spend my remaining heartbeats doing something I love or have to do.

The choice to use the Starfield cicle logo as the thing you see for the loading screens was a poor choice. Probably the last thing I would want to remind players of when they see the logo is L O A D I N G.
