Well who didn't see THAT coming? As I said, Although it may continue to be sold in other territories for a while, Canon's Japanese website has officially discontinued the products, so the writing is officially on the wall.

The 22mm f2 was a gem of a lens. I wish they had made a fully weather sealed fixed lens version of the M6 mk2.

Sad to see it go. I still use my M6 Mark II combined with the Sigma 56mm 1.4 and Canon 22mm 2.0 as a very light and portable kit. I hope Canon opens the RF mount for third party manufacturers soon, so we can start getting some affordable options for the new mount.

I have two of the original M bodies, along with an M6, an M6 MkII and an M50 with a decent selection of EF-M lenses. I wont be parting with them, will keep using them alongside my RF system and my EOS DSLRs. I will use them til they don't work. Every time I have sold or rid myself of a camera, in the past, I eventually regret it and wish I had kept it! Dead system or not, it fills a niche in my varied kit.

I have a soft spot for the M50. It had some flaws but was real joy to use. So I w‘ont selling mine. Unfortunately there was never a good standard zoom lens like a sigma 17-70 2.8-4 or 17-55. Adapting lenses was never a solution on this very compact system.

We still have a M5. It is my wife's camera and still meets her needs. I had hoped it would be a good second camera for me with the EF adapter, but the EF L series lenses dwarfed the camera. No need to replace it though since she is happy. If it breaks I'll have fun searching for something new for her though.

Like everyone else, I love the 22mm f2 lens. I use it with the M2 and love having an apsc sensor in such a small package. Sure, the R series is great as a main camera, but the M still has its place too 😭.

That's too bed, but, as you say, not unexpected. I have an M5 and an M50, and a full suite of lenses, and I like them a lot. They're small and light, and produce roughly the same image quality as the much larger 70D, 90D cameras. I probably won't sell them, as I'm not at all tempted by the new larger Canons. Eventually they'll die and I'll replace them with Sonys or Fujis.

Hello! Recently i bought an M50. I love this camera but whant to upgrade the lens. What would you recomend for a "holy trinity"? I am looking for some budget friendly options and maybe ef-s lenses are still nice for today "standards" and cheaper alternatives to some M lenses (and maybe it's a better option if one day i want other camera body) for now im thinking: -canon ef-s 10-22, for wide - canon ef-s 17-55 - canon ef-s 55-250 stm (I have the adapter) What do you think? Thanks a for the help!

I've owned an EOS M camera (before switching to Nikon). One of the worst camera decisions I've ever made, although I did enjoy the lovely Canon colors and still have the raw files from that crappy machine which did not even have an electronic viewfinder. I know I risk getting a lot of flak for what I am about to say, but good riddance, the M mount sucked and was totally unnecessary, they should have made an RF mount directly and built from there (like they are doing now), it was the poorest decision Canon had ever made.

Hi Chris. M system wasn't something successful (probably wasn't even intended to). It was known for quite poor performing sensor (noisy even on low ISO and especially in low light). I still have a Canon M5 and in addition to quite poor sensor performance, this camera has a slow and not reliable autofocus when lighting condition are not ideal. The only good thing about this camera is that it is well built, pleasing in use and produces a famous Canon colors. Kit lenses are quite poor optically too.

Only reason i m hesitant of newer Canon RF mount is LENS COLLECTION. Their are so few and so Expensive. Exactly opposite in SONY system. I'd choose canon image quality anyday over Sony , but lens selection is biggest issue.

My first camera was the M50 mark I... With the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and the viltrox speedbooster with adapted 85mm 1.8 i was able to capture one of my most favourite images of all time. Small lightweight package with fantastic IQ and decent AF. After 3,5 years I upraded to FF but i will miss those times dearly.

I'm really baffled that there isn't an RF-S version of the 22mm f/2. It really was a perfect little standard lens. Great image quality, close focusing, lovely bokeh, incredibly compact, highly affordable. Canon make four RF-S cameras now, but not one prime lens for RF-S. Ridiculous. Granted it took them 11 years to get around to doing it on EF-S, but they should be learning from those oversights. Marketing an entry-level camera without a standard prime lens in the catalog is ludicrous to me.
@KoenKooi

You can use the 16mm and 28mm primes, those are very small and good value for money. Don’t limit yourself to RF-S :)

I'm still using my M50ii and M6ii. The M50ii mainly for videos (with the Sigma 16mm), and the M6 for photography, My favourite EF-M lenses are the 27mm macro and the 22mm. I remember buying the first EOS M+22mm f2, and then upgrading the body to M50 which I still use until now. For me the pancake 22mm makes it hard to bid farewell to the M system as imho they are the perfect lens: tiny, versatile focal length, great image quality, and bright aperture

My first mirrorless was the introductory model of the M series. And yes, I got the 22mm and the 18-55mm lens package as well as the little flash. Over the years I upgraded a few times and still own 2 M5 bodies, the lenses previously mentioned as well as the EF-M 11-22mm. The wide angle zoom is almost always on one of my bodies and the other one has a Tamron 18-400mm which I find to be just about everything I need when out and about. I do own the Canon R, R7 and R6 MKII and a bunch of RF lenses but I still like to take my M5 system when I want a lighter bag. I have no plans to sell my M system. I just sent both bodies to CPS for their free 18 point inspection and sensor cleaning. Got the shutter count and there is lots of life left for these 2 cameras. I have considered picking up a 3rd one and having it converted for infrared.

I loved getting to start my photo journey on the EOS M50. It had Canon ergonomics and it was so cute. I started with the 15-45mm and the 32mm. Later, I picked up the M6 Mark II and a couple other EF-M lenses. I think I’ll pick up the Sigma 16 and 56 in EF-M one day. I just love the size and the usability of the EOS M system. With the larger mount, I’m not sure if they can ever make such cute little bodies and lenses again. Nonetheless, I’m super excited to keep using my EOS M system and it will occupy a special part of my photography journey 😁

I like that the m6 ii doesn’t have the EVF… since switching to mirrorless I’ve never used the viewfinder on any of my cameras. The EVF seems useless on a mirrorless camera where the back screen is already there showing the same thing. I wish they would make an RF camera without one too since they’ve just discontinued their best compact camera.
@Linteria
@Linteria 10 месяцев назад
@@stonewp i totally agree, i've grown to love the adaptability of the removable EVF. It's there when you need it, and when you don't you've got the most powerful point and shoot camera money can buy. I also shoot mostly without the EVF as it's just quicker and easier to frame from different angles, especially low ones. The tilt screen is perfect in this scenario, even if shooting portrait as you can tilt it out to the side. Canon discontinuing the line means nothing to owners of the system. The cameras will work for years to come, don't let this stop you from using great cameras which will now only get more affordable.

M10 was my first proper camera, got it to take photos of my newborn baby and found my hobby! Then I got the 22mm lens, and the picture quality was top! Sold my M10 because the auto focus for videos was poor, got a new M6 II, and a used M50, Sigma 30mm, Sigma 56 and all my needs are covered. I'm not interested in other systems at the moment and I do not regret investing in the M system because I use it almost daily and love the size and portability. There are plenty of used "like new" bodies and lenses on the market. I don't see myself getting another camera system soon, unless I was to do professional paid work.

The M3 was my first mirrorless, and I still use my M6 regularly. My first (and for a while only) EF-M lens was the 22mm f/2, and it's what sold me on the system in the first place. Later I got a range of other lenses (including the 11-22mm, the 32mm, etc.- based largely on your reviews of them, by the way) and a number of third-party manual lenses, from various manufacturers. Except for the M6 body and the EVF-DC2, all my genuine Canon EF-M stuff was bought used. Ironically, I did end up getting one of those strobes as well, but almost exclusively for use with my RP, which has no flash of its own. Thing is, there's nothing that can quite match the size and convenience of the EF-M system, and I'm still satisfied with the images I'm getting, so there's little chance of me selling off my gear anytime soon. If anything, I might track down an M6-II in good condition someday for one last upgrade.

I’m using an eos m5 with the 22mm pancake as a walk around/travel setup and the pictures are completely satisfactory for the 400 USD I spent on the package. The best camera is the one you have on you and being able to fit it in a pocket or a bag easily makes it my most used camera for non paid work despite owning and preferring my Nikon DSLR in both experience and picture quality. There’s something to be said for small cameras that have more granularity than those on my smart phone and are somehow cheaper than a quality point and shoot.

Street, portraits, candid, photojournalism, even architecture, macro or landscape - one can do all sorts of things with these cameras and lenses. Maybe the only gripe I had was that the system was not weather resistant. Apart of that the 11-22, the 22mm, the 32mm and the adapted 50 STM and 100/2.0 served me more than well and I sold them because I needed the money, not because I was not happy.

It’s unfortunate as it was not a bad system. It was my gateway back into Canon after many years using m43 Panasonic cameras. I took a chance and picked up a M6 mk2 for the heck of it to see what all the hype was about Canon. I was very impressed from the moment I used it. It had a ton of flaws of course but I could see the potential of how Canon could look. I eventually moved up to a R6 and now a R5 and I love them. It was thanks to the EOS-M system that brought me back to Canon after many years. The Sigma f1.4 primes were absolutely amazing on the camera. I also adapted Tamron f2.8 zooms with an adapter which worked great. Sadly it was very clear EOS-M wasn’t really going anywhere and its days were numbered. Canon could have done more with it but it was also clear it was being held back. APSC is always the red headed step child to Canon and a bit of a purposely limited format.

Thanks for this (sad) video. I use an R5 as my work horse but I carry an M10 around most of the time and when pennies allow I’m looking to get an M6mk2 for my every day camera. Hopefully the bodies and lenses will drop in price. I suspect there’ll continue to be a cult of us that like the system and use them, much like minidisc is still a very active communityz

Thanks Christopher. I had an EOS M50 for about a month, before being tempted by the Fuji system and ultimately swapping it for an X-T2. I brought the Canon with the additional 22mm f/2 pancake lens which was a cracker. I lost money as you always do but thankfully this was offset by the X-T2 being heavily discounted due to the X-T3 being launched. It's a real shame about the Canon M series 😔. If it could have perked the interest of independent lens manufacturers things could have worked out differently. Edit: Oops 😬 I'd no idea the M system was reasonably supported by the 3rd party. I suppose I'd lost interest before looking further at the time. Sorry folks

It is not honorable for the camera manufactures that all the consumers who invested in lenses for Nikon 1 mount, Pentax Q mount, Canon EF-M mount, Samsung NX and NX-mni mount are abandonded. All these mounts have simmilar focal distance and their lenses can not be used with autofocus adapters on other mirrorless mounts. a similar situation appeared during 80's with the autofocus revolution. The flange distance of EF-M lens is 18mm and can not be used with an adapter on the 20mm flange distance of cannon RF mount. Maybe with a third party autofocus adapter the EF-M can be used on the Nikon Z mount with 16mm flange focal distance. A similar adapter exist and is available for e-mount lenses on nikon Z mount cameras.

I've got a more expensive tastes in cameras, having just went from a 6D to an RP and finally R6. Kind of wish I could just be happy and use what I got forevermore as well, somwtimes. With the R6, I dont see any reason to get anything for a long time, at least. Framerate, sensor performance, and good autofocus is all there, wheras my last ones were lacking one or two of those.

I bought into the M system almost 4 years ago, upgrading to an M50 from a Rebel T5. At the time it seemed like the logical choice - I could keep using all my EF lenses and get access to some nice compact primes too. I've put a lot of mileage on that body over the course of many adventures, but recently gave in to GAS and added a full frame body and lenses to my toolkit. Unfortunately for Canon, my choice went to one of their competitors. If Canon had handled the RF-S rollout differently, I wouldn't have even thought about switching brands. A few years earlier and I would have gone straight to RF-S from EF-S. Or if they had more agressively ported over their EF-M lenses or figured out some sort of backwards compatible upgrade path from EF-M (body with a switcheable mount?), I would have probably jumped to RF-S when they released the R50. I'll keep the M50, 22mm, and 32mm on hand for times I want a camera I can easily carry in a coat pocket. I just love the portability with great image quality of that setup. The rest of the EF and EF-M lenses I bought over the years I'm either selling or have sold. Eventually, of course, something better will come along or my M50 and lenses will wear out. Maybe at that point I'll pick up an R50 or one of its successors. But, because of how Canon handled the transition to RF, I'll be closely looking at every brand and picking the one that I think best fits my needs instead of just blindly following the brand I started with. No matter what happens, though, I'll always have good memories of using my EF-M system. I'll miss it once it's gone.

Such a shame Canon seem to care even less about their RF-S lenses!! Shaving off focal lengths, shrinking the apertures, not releasing any new, desirable, imaginative or creative lenses and disallowing third parties! So weird why you'd make such amazing new RF-S cameras but not build the systems lenses it so desperately needs. I'll stick with the M's for now, Viva la EF-M!!

I already saw this coming many years ago. Never liked the M series as they don’t come with great lenses. I could tell the EOS M was a weak attempt by Canon to compete against Olympus and Fujifilm in the small camera body department. So when more EOS M bodies appeared in 2018 together with the R series, I was even more baffled. On forums, I kept telling people to avoid the EOS M series! Canon should really get their act right. Look at their chunky and heavy RF lenses. There are also too many boring looking R bodies now. They look like a 20 year old DSLR camera. 🥱 Their recently released small V10 camera is a complete flop as well!

My first camera was an A6000. Once I got into photography, I got an M6 II and enjoyed it quite a bit. That was last year. Then I heard that Canon dropped the M mount, so the system would get no new glass. A lot of people were saying "Just get EF glass!" and I did. A big 17-55 F2.8 Canon lens. That thing was 3x the weight of the camera! Im a hobbiest, and wanted something portable and I found myself leaving the camera home since it was just so bulky. I started looking at RF camera's but then the news broke that RF was a locked format, and I JUST had the M mount die just before that, I was done with Canon. Went back to Sony and got an A6600, and now have an A6700. I have Tamron, Sigma, and Sony glass (Just got the Sony 70-200 F4 MkII!!!!) and im really happy.

Bought my M50 mk2 in 2021 and still do not regret it. It's a really great versatile little camera system, and easy on the budget. With camera sales lost to smartphones It's no wonder Canon has to tighten up the product line but, dropping the APS-C line may prove to be a mistake in the long run. I'm guessing the profit margin on full frame is better than APS-C. Not sure Canon will see the volume in FF they saw in APS-C, but then perhaps that's the plan. I won't be upgrading anytime soon.

Great vid as usual. Canon are the very epitome of a company that doesn’t know what it is doing. Back in the day, the EF/EF-S divide worked. The M mount replaced the EF-S well, but the buffoons at the top have messed it up. Restricting third party, killing the obvious pro-Sumer line and muddling the Pro-Body name with cheap looking offerings. These are all indications of an R &D department out of control. I was a lifelong professional Canon shooter…. They’re the last manufacturer I’d think of turning to now.

I started my proper photography journey this year back in April when I bought a used Canon M50 with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. That combo allowed me to take my absolute favorite portrait ever of a friend in a flower field lit by the golden hour. That is a combo so good that I am having a hard time departing from it even when I have settled on my Fuji X-T5 as my APS-C system of choice. The M6 II was by far the best of the series, it felt like Canon finally stopped hitting EOS M with the cripple hammer and made a proper enthusiast compact camera. But by then it was too late, Sony had already established dominance in the market with their A6000 series. I think the RF mount just looks too big on canon apsc cameras that they have to make a design with a shrank front, eos m just looks more balanced. I understand that they have to move forward but looking back to M6 ii, it was a great camera and was so close to be a perfect every day camera. Now I just wish canon could make a small rangefinder style compact apsc camera for street photography and everyday use (similar to the nikon line-up they have slr style z50, rangefinder style z30 and retro style zfc, I would argue the only down side would be the lack of ibis). The current ones looks a bit too dull IMHO. If Canon come up with a light weight, good looking apsc camera with performance similar to fujifilm xs20, I assure you it will sell a ton as things such as ibis, easy of use and colour science are all canon's advantages.
