The singer said he wrote the song about a time when he lived in Australia, in an apartment, and he lived on the bad side of town, and he lived next to drug dealers, and sometimes other drug dealers would get his apartment mixed with the actual drug dealers next door…he said that so many people would knock at his door, and it unnerved him to the point he never wanted to answer the door. He was terrified. So basically the song is about being paranoid.

Pretty sure the guy in the song is crazy recluse. He says: "I've done no harm, I keep to myself. There's nothing wrong with my state of mental health" and asks: "Is it the man come to take me away? Why do they follow me? It's not the future that I can see. It's just my fantasy." He's clearly off his rocker.

This and "Down Under" put Australia on the international scene in the early 80s (several years before Crocodile Dundee). For your next MaW song, I recommend "Overkill". They also had great songs like "It's a Mistake", "Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive", and "Be Good Johnny". Colin Hay's voice is still amazing! P.S. Overkill is their best by a million miles. This one is still great and was a staple on early MTV. Men at Work was really really good for a few years. "It's a Mistake" is a great anti-war song.

Back in the late 80's I was on a concert in Norway. The band was from Australia, The Black Sorrows. I really love them. Joe Camelleri with the Bull sisters. and they've been here in my hometown several times after.

YES… “OVERKILL”❤️ and “Down Under”… “It’s a mistake” as well.. Colin Hay and Men at work are a fantastic band that crept in and took their own unique place in music history. I feel blessed to be exposed to so much music pre 2010 when out of nowhere melody and uniqueness was pushed away for monotone sounds and (most) every artist sounding the same. This song is about paranoid schizophrenia.. Brilliant writing hidden in a unique melody. Keep ‘em coming🙂🙂🙂

By far my favorite Men At Work song is Overkill. Both the studio version and an acoustic version released years later are both very good. And the meaning of the song, at least for me, is about learn to let go of things out of your control. I'm sure for others it has different meanings. Plus Colin Hay's vocal on that song is exceptional.

When I was in high school I legit was in a big bathroom with my best friend (cause we were incapable of going alone) she was still in the stall, I picked out what I THOUGHT were her shoes, I knocked three times, she got it and sang “Who can it be now” over and over from her stall (which was actually EPIC!) I jerked my head in the direction of her voice realizing I had the wrong stall at the same time the person in the stall I knocked on said, “GOOD GRIEF, may I have more than 5 seconds?” and my friend just kept singing! There was a pause while my friend sang that line 3 times with sax sound affects, I started to say, I am so sorry but EVERYBODY laughed in that bathroom and the people waiting in line! Then I started laughing and laughed so hard I cried. To this day I see my friend, almost 40 years later and I will sing, “Who can it be now” and we lose it. She always reminds me that her most embarrassing moments of LIFE were with me, I tell her I got her out of her shell! She will say, I was really into the song, including sound affects with the sax, and everybody STARTED laughing, I thought they were laughing at my singing, I am still traumatized! I have another high school bathroom story with that same friend that is so embarrassing but perhaps another one of your videos will make me think of it?!?! 😂 💗

Men At Work are an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1978 & best known for breakthrough hits such as "Who Can It Be Now?" & "Down Under". They had some other songs such as "Be Good Johnny", "Overkill", "Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive", "It's A Mistake", "Everything I Need", "Maria", "The Longest Night". Men At Work performed "Down Under" at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, alongside Paul Hogan of "Crocodile" Dundee.

Grew up in Australia in early 80s, listening to bands like men at work, inxs, midnight oil, and many more. I saw Colin hay at Manchester appollo here in UK a few years ago.🇭🇲🇬🇧 I still listen to a lot of oz/nz tunes from that time, a lot of good memories, 👍 😊🇭🇲

Excellent suggestion, love that one. I'm like Amber, drawn to songs featuring the sax. If she enjoys instrumentals as well as vocals, she REALLY needs to look into anything by one of the best sax players ever, the late,great Boots Randolph. He was the GOAT in my opinion. One of his greatest hits ,"Yakety Sax" is so catchy and upbeat, but he had SO many hits it's impossible to pick a favorite. From upbeat, to slow and romantic and everything in between, there's no one better than Boots !

My husband and I saw Men at Work and INXS was there backup band. This was in 1983 near Chicago. I had never heard of INXS. I loved Men at Work but INXS was really a good band. I had to go out and buy the album at the time. So I had both their albums. INXS became very popular in the few years to follow but I really never heard much of Men at Work after that. We really enjoyed the concert though. Both great bands from Australia!

@@TheRatsCast If you notice the apartment in the video, it is rundown. Colin Hay's has stated that he lived in bad neighborhood and his apartment was often mistaken for the drug dealers and he would have people all times of night. He also said that even when it wasn't those people it was always someone who wanted something from him. I haven't seen him state anything about taxes....

"Down Under" will hit you as the fun quirky song, but "Who Can It Be Now" is honestly the one with staying power. If you spin it a couple of times, you will grow to love it, especially if the audio quality is better than in that video.

Just watched Pentatonic "Little Drummer Boy" - show cases ever member and brought tears of joy to my eyes and ears!! You would love it. Also the song "Sing" was written by them and terrific! Loved it immensely!!

This is one of the greatest songs of the 80's! It's not hard to understand at all. The lyrics are very clear and concise and the song is clever and well written. One of my favorites from this era of musuc.

I miss these guys, so 80's. Miami vice music on their episodes were phenomenal. They had two other hits Be good Johnny It's a Mistake. Then just like that they were gone. So said just like the 80's. My late teens had Everything, then grunge came, a whole new group of people, Got married had kids my party days were OVER But life Began again with FAMILY.

I've seen them live at Pink Pop 1983 they were an unique experience, fire and dynamite like performance. And the singer Colin Hay also plays a range of instruments for the rest he's just insane🤪🤣Men at Work just so 80's still love them.

Another FANTASTIC band from Australia is "Midnight Oil". Their music is super political yet very catchy & Yes even a bit quirky! The lead singer Peter Garrett has a very distinct voice & has ran for & WON a seat in the senate in Australia. The band is STILL together & tours from time to time. Their hit songs include: "Beds Are Burning" , "Power and the Passion" , "The Dead Heart" & "Blue Sky Mine" You guys would love them. I Love a band w/a message, I think you guys do to.
