This video is completely pointless. As if the argument that the definition of a weapon hinges on its implementation was something new. Why not impress us all by stating that a nuclear warhead can be a tool to get rid of asteroids... Next step is: "Weapons don't kill, people kill" ... Jeeeez 🙄 ain't that a smart creator.
My favorite internet quote: “Guns can kill. Knives can kill. Even children, launched at great speed, can kill.” Every time I think about it I giggle a little
Honestly I'd use a typical nail hammer for both defense and offense. Cuz even if someone puts their arms up to protect the face. That hammer is gonna literally smash the person's arms. And it has hooking abilities. Witch makes it even better if the other person is armed with like a knife or baseball bat. You can hook it mid swing/stab.
there was this one murder case in my town, a boy sneaked into one's house and hammered 4 people to death with a 2$ hammer. one victim was a gang member, while the rest, sadly, was his kids, aged from 8 to 12 :(
When he went saying "some knifes can be art, some can be tool, some can be weapons" I was expecting him to finish with "aaand some can be a hammer" then putting the hammer back on screen and opening it up to reveal that the hammer was also a knife
Diamond Hawk74 there are certain states that depending on your level of martial arts training and the style of martial arts itself you may be required to register your hands and feet as deadly weapons
i do judo and know the rear naked choke damn well... should i register my elbow pit as a weapon? i've done tae kwon do and am a bit more flexible on my right leg... should i register my right foot as a weapon, since it's the only one that can reach the head of any opponent?
random guy: hey can i borrow a pocket knife? Lugermonger: yea sure, holdup lemme get em *two minutes later* Lugermonger: *pulls out 49 knifes* here, you can choose one
Exactly... I have a load of weapon-y stuff in my car like axes, hammers, screwdrivers, extension pipes or breaker bars, but if you put me in a situation, do you think that I would bother leaving the comfy seat to clobber you with either? No! I will run you over and job’s a good one... Why are things considered weapons when most solid matter can be employed in a manner that will result in corpses... You can say guns, but again, does it really matter? Yeah, some things are more effective at being a controllable and efficient weapon, but then, being a weapon doesn’t mean it will be employed unless necessary, making most weapons wielded by sane people less weapon-y than a non-weapon can be when wielded by a moron or someone intent on causing harm... Like the already mentioned car as a prime example of a non-weapon weapon which rains death upon pedestrians and others in the hands of someone not thinking straight for whatever reason...
As a line cook who uses knives everyday as part of my job, I would never go for a kitchen knife if I needed a weapon in an emergency. There are so many other things in the kitchen that would better suit self defense than a kitchen knife, depending on how much damage you want to do. Heck, many cooks I work with have non-kitchen knives on them that would be better suited for that purpose. However it is a pretty dangerous tool. So is a deep fryer, and a meat slicer, so they aren't unique in this regard. When I saw this I immediately though of how no cook would ever use their kitchen knife on anything other than food, mostly because they are expensive and a good kitchen knife is hard to come by. Inversely, even in a pinch, a combat knife like the ones shown here would be completely useless in kitchen. To a degree it is about how you use a knife, but this video is spot on about design dictating function. It also made me think about the fact that although I know a ton about knives that are designed for culinary uses, I'm pretty ignorant on knives in general. Not many people can say that they hold/use a knife for 5+ hours a day most days of the week, but even so I only ever learned what I needed to know about knives, which is how they are used in food production.
@@Alucard-gt1zf I mean. Yes and no. I work in a kitchen too, and most of the time, I've got other various tools around me to use if I really needed to. An eight inch chef knife isn't really designed to be swung around all that well, but a meat mallet? That's got weight, and can do some damage. Plus, if you use your own knife from home, those usually tend to be expensive, and you have to clean them thoroughly if you cut yourself, nevermind someone else. Then the fact it would probably be confiscated as evidence. It's just a case of having so many better options.
Aye did u know that the karambit was actually not meant as a weapon? Im Pretty sure (correct me if I'm wrong) the Japanese/ Chinese ppl used the karambit as a farming tool or another tool of some sort . Then ppl saw it as a weapon.
KoolestKman that's where the weapon originated for several reasons people weren't able to use actual weapons swords polearms Etc as well as they weren't readily available so people used what they had on hand farm equipment in this case and different specific form of martial arts developed around these weapons as the items themselves evolved from farm equipment to weapons they're modern state you can still buy a hawkbill bladed tool to cut wheat or rice but it's not a fox 479
@@zilet7844 I'm assuming you're joking since you mentioned stilettos, however, a karambit can be pretty deadly. One good cut to the neck (specifically an artery) and you can have someone bleeding out quite quickly
@@maddyterrell0 nah bro, I said that 4 days ago because I was emotional about one stiletto. I guess karambit it's more useful in combat but I thought stiletto were more efficient because they aren't that curved
@@zilet7844 The karambit's curve is designed after an animal claw. Just imagine the sharp curved part of the blade being sliced across your neck and maybe even some tendons. That would either kill you quickly or disable you and even allow time for you to be killed. You can even imagine how well a cat can scratch you (they can scratch really well), then just imagine their claw but bigger and maybe even sharper
I am a woodworker/carpenter and I use both of those tools. If I were to get into a physical fight where I needed a weapon at work (for some reason I needed to protect my life from violence) I'd go for my hammer EVERYTIME.
i think its on paper necessary evil and lesser evil thats unnecessary, so banned. in reality, it becomes "well if this super dangerous thing isnt banned, why is this less dangerous thing banned"
What country is that? Here in Canada, but swords of all description are totally unregulated. I've got a small decorative sword that could easily kill someone by accident, because its needlessly pointy and sharp, and my brother owns a 4 foot Viking longsword made to split wood
@@potaterjim probably the uk, there’s a massive knife problem. People regularly get stabbed with massive blades and police keep catching people with zombie knives
@@seadu2749 so your telling me of I go outside right now with machete and get arrested by police they will let me go because my giant knife is completely legal
when i used to be in my high school metals classes, it struck me how we still werent allowed to have our own scissors, yet a peice of steel which you could pick up would be a perfectly good weapon. the bare minimum you need to kill someone is something heavy you can swing
"Tool or Weapon" is a bogus argument. Let me explain: A tool is something build for a direct purpose, mostly to aid in the fullfilment of a certain action, job or task. A hammer is for driving in and pulling out nails for example. So it's a tool, because it was "build/designed for a function". A sledgehammer is also a hammer but different. It is useless in pulling out nails. So is it still a tool? Yes. Yes it is. Because it was build for another function: Aid to smash things. So if you expand this meaning to knives or weapons, a "weapon" is just a broad description for tools that aid in the task of unaliving people or to defend yourself. All weapons are tools, but not all tools are weapons. And yes the designed function does not mean it cant fulfill other functions. A hammer CAN be a weapon. But it never was build to be one. Unless it was a warhammer. Nice Vide btw :D
Absolutely agree that weapons are a classification of tool. The use of that tool catagory happens to be unaliving things, or at least making things feel very uncomfy, but hey.
TheWizardingPanda I'm not going to say that's not true but you really have to consider do you have the skill level to be able to do that and how effective of a weapon is it going to be against an armed assailant it's just not realistic
"Everything is deadly. Even if I need to freeze it into a bullet and shoot it at you" -my old biology professor On top of that, a weapon is *technically* a tool because a tool is an inanimate object or group of objects used to complete a task. So a _weapon_ is a _tool_ used to complete the _task_ of injuring someone or something. Sure, some are better designed to complete a certain task but if I can't find my mallet I'm gonna use a pipe wrench to straighten out a piece of metal rod. On top of ALL that, these definitions are all a societal construct which in itself is a human construct and only has the meaning we give it, so there's that.
@Yazmeli Ayzol Yes to both. What are you trying to do with them? A cigarette but is a surprisingly effective filter. A used condom can DEFINITELY be used as a weapon. Ask any man paying child support for a kid he wasn't supposed to have fathered.
2" diameter 1 1/2 foot of knotted heavy rope is a powerful weapon as well as highly useful around a camp as a hanger, hiking to slip a knot into a branch fork or rock crevasse and use as a hand hold to pull yourself up. You can even buy them ready made as a dog tug toy.
kurt that is the Genesis of the design yes tools for cutting rice and other grasses but the reason the Karambit exists is the people we're not allowed to have developed weapons so a martial art formed around the tools they had at the ready the curved blade Karambit being one of them the knife has evolved to suit a specific form of martial arts the historical basis may have been agricultural but the modern karambits are not designed to cut grass it is designed to cut people
Wait I thought the karambit was made in Africa and the purpose was a small concealable blade that is small but long enough to cut the insides of the enemy and the blade shape was inspired from a tiger claw huh I guess in just crazy lol
@@Ads-yw1wr it also can be handled differently depending on its use and while not the BEST knife for certain tool purposes, it still does a lot well as a tool, like I carry one for self defense but use it as a tool often, such as to open boxes or cut things like paracord
Did you know that a cotton piece can be a weapon ... It all depends upon how you use it . Cotton rubbed over eyes cause corneal abrasion which classifies as Grievous hurt.
A good way to answer that question is a butter knife. Is it a tool? Yes. Is it a weapon? Possibly but definitely not a effective weapon. Different knives for different situations with some being somewhat of a Jack-of-all-trades.
+Adapt you do know the use of items can change over time, right? A bow and arrow were originally made to kill but sometimes they are simply used in archery competitions.
+Adapt ok, but a sledgehammer is just as effective a weapon but it wasn't made to kill. So I guess the police won't give you extra weapon charges for when you assault someone with it. Because it's a tool right? I personally do not think the origin of the tool, weapon or whatever matters. Just how it's currently used.
I think that's why I love my CRKT Ripple (original Acuto+ model) so much. It's a fantastic knife to use, very fun to operate, and has gone up a fair bit in value since I bought it retail several years ago. So it's a bit of everything, I mainly pocket it when I'm dressing up for an event or something, and otherwise just keep it on my desk and play with it. 😂
Gustavo Souza you see m8. But in some countries where u can have a gun u cant have a balisong etc. For example Poland. You can have a gun but...i Dont recomended using it in sejf defence of u 90% of the Time go to jail.nontheles u have guns...buuut i cant have knuckle dusters/brass knukles .hoewer u wonna call them
It's a good IMPROVISED weapon.i just don't get how people get upset about someone who see knives as weapon on the first place but you give them an cvainsaw they say it's a tool and guess what ? As a weapon i take the chainsaw.
Tfw jesus tells you to do something illegal I mean we have some good trainers here..like cheap 10€ balisongs And no good stuff...and I cant get like squid trainer or shankle trainer either...smh my country sucks when it comes to balisongs
I know this was made three years ago but thank god there's another person out there with a brain. The amount of times I've had an argument with someone about this is unbelievable
really nice and simple video, some people just don't understand this and I can show them this video if I ever need to explain to someone that it depends on how the knife is made
No how something looks should not be a criteria on which to judge legality or lethality. I had a piece of reber driven through my calf does that mean it was intended to be a weapon.
I love that his videos end with "yall have a good one" rather then "So if you liked this video please like and subscribe, share with friends, blah blah blah, yall have a good one" i have liked almost every one of his videos i've seen because they don't beg for said likes, they earn them.

Fun fact, apparently a Karambit was originally a farming implement. This may seem surprising to some but it makes sense when you realize that a ton of "Ninja" weapons were pretty much exclusively farming tools. Kunai were basically trowels, so yeah.
this video: pops up in recommended feed 3 years after it was made me: hmmm, didn't expect the hindsight of the past to greet me so well *is currently standing over a dead body*
"Some knives are designed as weapons while others are designed as tools" sounds like a very dangerous logic to me. This logic can be used to create idiotic regulations very quickly since no one can clearly define where to draw the line between tools and weapons, and quite honestly I think this line doesn't even exist in the first place. But law makers can create some arbitrary definitions to deem some as tools designed solely to cause harm, or "assault weapons" as they love the term so much.
9SS94Cr that's actually the reason we have the laws we do in a lot of places the definition of a weapon Beyond double-edged automatic gravity knife ballistic knife it's hard to put a definite separation between weapon and tool the majority of those types of knives being banned in most areas with stricter knife laws excluding the Karambit and let's hope they don't figure that one out
Ironically, CA has one of the more forgiving knife laws out there. You are allowed to open carry pretty much anything, beside the obvious balis and autos(stubby 2'' blades are allowed) of course.
9SS94Cr yeah that's true there are several other states more recently becoming more knife friendly but you're right however talk to to some of the people here and that phrase assault knife could become a household term I have literally been told I should be in jail for carrying a knife it was a Benchmade impel
Most people, including many cops, automatically assume Autos and Balis are illegal everywhere in the states. Old prejudices die hard. This is why even I'm allowed to carry balis and autos, I never carry them outside of my home.
Something else to consider(that you probably have tbh), the tool aspect of knives isn't just a cutting implement, they can be used as (not very good) screw drivers. For example I do a lot of camera stuff, and the screw for my tripods quick release plate is a big flat head/coin slot thing and my door lock is the same and many times I've used my knife to loosen or to unlock my door. They can also be used as a pry bar, or even a hammer. Having a knife really cuts down on the amount of things I need/want to carry.
I basically made this argument to my roommate about a year ago, and a few weeks later I saw he had purchased a knife. I asked him if I had persuaded him to get one, and he said he had actually bought 5 knives. So that's my story of being an accidental knife salesman.
If a situation calls for a knife, it calls for a firearm, a knife is one step above a fist fight, when your fighting to protect your life, that is the last resort because of the increased risk of losing or severe bodily harm. I carry a knife mainly to cut stuff, I can use it for self defense, but I'll go for my pistol first, and if you can justify stabbing your can justify shooting. Remember the most important part is to increase your chances of winning bye minimizing your chances of losing or sustaining serve bodily harm
The thing with firearms is that it it is hard to run away from. If you have a knifewielder and 3 guys - 2 will likely get away. Give him a pistol and 5 will die.
@@SimonLausch and then the shooter gets multiple homicide charges cause they had no self control. And one guy with a knife vs two guys the knife guy is probably gonna end up dead unless he's trained substantially better than the attackers
Doesn't make sense to carry a pistol if you won't draw it. But most people don't. The most weapony thing I regularly carry is a plastic waterbottle, so that'll have to do.
Great vid bro. Keep em comin. Especially like the way u explained the whole double edged sword situation for us (see what I did there) definitely pretty clear to understand, thanks a lot.
Me clicking on this video: this is going to be some anti liberal “liberals are snowflakes who think that knives are weapons” stuff but I was pleasantly surprised that you actually explained that some knives are designed to be weapons and some were designed to be tools.
A weapon is defined as an object which is designed to or used to kill an animal or person. So yes some knives are weapons by design. For example Karambits are weapons, Bowie knives are weapons, and Daggers are weapons. Because all of these are designed with primarily with combat in mind. And the can be in some cases very useful as tools. However a bushcraft knife, a kitchen knife and a hunting knife. Are optimized to be used for other tasks. They are tools. But you'd best believe it would kill you if someone stuck you with a kitchen knife. That said Some knives are tools and some are weapons. But once one is used to harm or kill, It is now a weapon.
The point of people classifying them as tools is so law makers and police don't pass laws banning the use and carry of pocket knives or that when you get stopped by a police officer a knife in the car isn't enough to give them warrant to search your vehicle because its a tool not a weapon. That's why I haven't got my pocket knives taken away from me in 2 different cases we shouldn't try to classify any knife as a weapon because law makers would definitely make some types illegal like in Canada no butterfly knives or any form of switch blade or gravity knife.
That matches perfectly with the hammer as a tool/weapon argument. There were war hammers for example to be used as weapons, while there are also hammers that are meant to just be tools.
I actually carry that fox karambit to work. I do HVAC and honestly it does wonderfully for cutting insulation, skinning wire, etc. Doubling as a possible weapon is just a bonus.
I'm almost 13, and I've had a knife for some months. I wanted one for years but my mom wouldn't let me get one. My dad never had a problem with me having one, but my mom always took the knives he gave me. Now she only lets me keep my knife cause I use it to open her Amazon packages.
The difference between a tool and a weapon is how you use it. Once had a school P.O in an art class making rounds (Middle School) we were given random objects and asked to organize them in to categories. Some people went by color, others by shape etc etc. P.O did his, and when the teacher asked him how he decided it was "things that can be used as a weapon"... a pen, a pencil, hell even the cap to a bic pen could blind somebody if you jammed it in there. Same as guns.. is it a tool for self defense/hunting/competition. or is it a weapon. Depends how you're using it.
This is a fantastic video. Very impartial, I'm no fan of weapon knives but I think everyone who wants to talk about this issue should refer to this video as a starter and work into the details on a knife by knife basis.
My point of view, all knives are tools. It's just the job that's best suited for them that changes. Same with guns really but sadly, we are moving to the point where "knives are as weapons to be banned" rather then "guns are tools to be handled responsibly"
As a gun person, this video hits home despite the difference in tool. Guns, while always capable of being used as weapons, can serve a variety of specialized purposes. From sporting, to hunting, to having fun, and finally to harm another human being. Firearms can even be artistic to a certain degree. Take the thompson into account and how it looks when compared to the "grease gun" that later replaced it due to cost. And yet people are so quick to call basically any gun with a pistol grip and a magazine an "assault weapon" like how any knife with a pointy tip is called a "combat knife"
The karambit doesnt JUST belong to the Philippines, it originated from the whole region of Nusantara(indonesia, philippines, malaysia, brunei, and most southeast asian nations)
If I was up against someone who had a knife I’d use a sword, if they then got a pistol I’d get a semi automatic, if they then got a full on automatic I’d get an rpg, if they got a tank I’d get a boing AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. If they then controlled the power of Optimus prime I’d summon Paul bunion, if they got the Death Star I’d get the death planet. It’s safe to say I’m prepared
