“Football” was an older game that evolved into soccer (officially association football), rugby (officially rugby football), and then American football. The Brits coined the term soccer and the Americans picked it up because it made sense for them to differentiate between soccer and American football. Since rugby football was shortened to rugby, there was no need for it to stay soccer in England and just “football” was solidified as the official name.

Some of the players can run between 17 and 20 miles per hour, so when they hit or tackle someone going full speed, it causes injuries. Many of the players live in ice baths the day after the game, and the constant trauma can shave years off of their life expectancy.

In many ways this sport exemplifies the American ideal: it's a game which requires excellent teamwork in order to succeed, but also highlights individual achievements within that framework. On each play there are eleven men lining up for each team, each of them with specific responsibilities for that play; if one player fails in their duties, it will often mean failure for his entire team. On the other hand, you do occasionally see plays such as these where a single player demonstrates exceptional athleticism and overcomes their opponents, no matter how well those around him play. There have been a number of top players in the NFL who were born in Africa over the years, and there are several active in 2022. Nigerian Christian Okoye is one of the best known among them and was a top running back for the Kansas City Chiefs in the late 1980s, leading the league in rushing yards in 1989.
@richardsteiner8992

These isolated plays are interesting (and sometimes pretty) to look at, but in terms of the actual sport they don''t mean anything. The flow of each game can extend throughout the entire match, and while individual plays and hits and other elements might well make a difference in the game, football is a TEAM game. One star athlete is usually not enough to get a team consistent victories. It's about identifying and addressing patterns of play and exploiting weaknesses on the other team.

Think of football as a battlefield. One side is trying to get the spoils (a touchdown), while other side is trying to defend their spoils and possibly get some of their own. The offensive side has far plays to advance 10 yards. If they advance 10 or more yards, they get four more chances- called downs- to advance another 10 yards. The offense continues advancing until they breach the defense's fortress- the end zone- or if the don't get the 10 yards. The are certain rules to the game that you pick up as you watch, but this is the basis for what you're watching. Enjoy! It is a great sport 💯

There is a way to challenge a play. Officials can throw a yellow flag to denote a penalty. Coaches have three red flags per game. They can throw the flag to challenge the calling the penalty or the results of the play such as whether a play made a certain yardage or a touchdown. If the challenge is successful after the referees review on instant replay, then the team is moved to the designated spot or score is awarded. If unsuccessful, then the team is charged with a timeout. There are timeouts per half. Each time has two ref flags per game. If the first two are successful, they get one more.

11:22 From my understanding, sports played on your feet (rather than mounted on an animal, etc.) and involving a ball are categorized as Football. That's why it's Association Football, Rugby Football, Gaelic Football, Gridiron Football, etc. It has nothing to do with utilizing your feet to interact with the ball. It's just people decided to shorten organizations' names for everyday use. Association Football became popular worldwide, making it many Countries' default Football game. Association Football was already coined as Soccer by the English and spread globally at the time, and Americans kept the term. Out of all the various Football games in North America, Gridiron Football was more popular than the others, becoming North America's default Football game.
@mgentles3

In football's infancy, the forward pass was almost a rarity. The ball was kicked much more often than it is now. In today's game the ball is kicked off to the opposing team at the beginning of the game, after a team has scored, and for instances when the team is stalled within kicking range of the goal post. A team has four chances or 'downs' to advance ten yards. They will seldom use the fourth down because if they fail to make the necessary distance, the other team gets the ball no matter where it is located on the field. So if the team is too far from the goal to try a' field goal', the 'punter' will come out and kick the ball to the opposing team. If a team is within range for a field goal, the 'kicker' will be called on for the fourth down play to kick the ball between the uprights of the goal post to score three points. Touchdowns score six points and there is an opportunity for one additional point after a touchdown if the kicker (from the 35 yard line) can kick the ball through the uprights of the goal. The kicker and punter, along with the 'long snapper' are specialists and don't participate in any other portion of the game. The punter receives the ball in his hands and 'drop kicks' it, while for the kicker the ball is placed on a tee or, in the case of a field goal, held upright on the ground by a teammate known as the 'holder'. In that scenario, the ball is 'hiked' between the legs of the 'long snapper' to the holder who then holds the ball upright for the kicker. As you watch actual games, you'll see a man hike the ball to the quarterback, who is usually standing immediately behind him, sometimes actually touching the inside of his leg. The quarterback will then either pass the ball to a receiver or hand it off to a runner. At times the quarterback will be a few yards behind the 'center' who is the man who hikes or 'snaps' the ball to him. The long snapper, on the other hand, always hikes the ball a longer distance to the 'holder'. Thus the name of his position.

A note about the name of "football" in America. What is now American football was introduced to America on east coast university campuses as rugby in the late 19th century. At the time the game WAS more about running and kicking the ball past goalposts. However, as we Americans are prone to do, we customize rules to suit our tastes and, of course, we gave it our own name. As people got more injured, the general public demanded measures to make the game safer and more and more safety equipment came into use. Since the game was played at universities, interested educated men who enjoyed the game wanted to formalize the rules and organize the game to attempt to make it safer. One change was to break apart the traditional rugby scrum which was viewed as chaotic and dangerous into a scrimmage line akin to two "army" battle lines. The idea being that the offense would attempted to penetrate the defense's line and touch the ball down in the defensive end zone then the other team would get a turn. This was viewed as an improvement as it was less chaotic and more structured with play stopping once a payer was tackled and resuming with a new scrimmage line where he was tackled. As the sport became more popular, more rules were added to try to lessen the likelihood of injury. One such rule, which changed the game forever and is the real source of "futbol" fan's derision of the name of our game, is the creation of the forward pass to allow another way to advance the ball without bulling your way through a massive line of people to tackle you. Now, after the restart of play, an offensive player can run past the scrimmage line, have the ball heaved toward him, catch it, and advance the ball. Much like adding the three point shot to basketball opened up the space around the rim by forcing the defender to cover the rim and the perimeter, this opened up the offenses to either run at the line of scrimmage to gain territory or have receivers run past the line to catch a pass which forced defenses to adjust and create a more open, exciting, and enjoyable game. This is where the real disassociation of the foot from American football came to fruition. The introduction of the forward pass in the early 20th century and its ascendance ever since, however, has been a major factor in making professional American football (NFL) and MAJOR college American football the two most popular sports in the United States.

Also, the “foot” in football has nothing to do with a certain part of the body. When football first started, the ball length was 12 inches, and since 12 inches is a foot, guess where the name came from. Later, they reduced the length to 11 inches but the name stuck. Hence, the name “foot” in football denotes distance, not about a certain part of the human body.

The US calls it Football because rugby and football used to be under the same football association. The US slang took after the English slang at the time to add er to the end of soc in association to refer to football. This just stuck in the US to be called Soccer, and we refer to american football as Football from Football association. Only later on did the countries differentiate the two sports from each other under different names. Especially since rugby and American Football have drastically different rules and regulations from each other as of now. Edit: For American Football we wear specialized helmates with face guards, multilayered football shoulder guards (what makes the players look like the helmate meets their neck under the shirt), built in padded pants on the groin and knees, sometimes padded shin guards (player by player basis as they usually don't get injured there anyways). Safety in football has been taken into account drastically from how it used to be. When you wear the full thing, you feel like a tank. It's the reason we're able to exert the power of a 75mph car crash so confidently, then immediately jump to our feet and jump around like "LOOK AT ME!" Lol

@@GoddyGE No problem. In the US, Football is played in elementary school, middle school, highschool, college, and professionally. College players are usually on a scholarship that allows them to have their expenses fully paid for by the school for attending. Colleges are also what the National Football League (NFL) looks at to draft new professional players. This causes extreme competition in the college scene similar to professional games by average. This is because the best college players would be the most likely to become professionals who make upwards of $1-10 million, and some higher per year. When people in the US talk about rich people, a lot of them are from sports like professional football. Concussions mostly occur from helmet on helmate full speed collisions. Otherwise, we're not the type to shy away from injuries like broken bones because if you can afford it, it's no issue with our healthcare leading technology. "As long as we can, we will" is a great way to understand it from here. It's dangerous driving, yet that's the main mode of transportation in the US. Natural disasters are large here. We're not scared of danger. We're the type that overcomes dangers instead of fearmongering, because that gets us nowhere. Life is dangerous. Live yours how you see fit is our mindset.

you might enjoy watching Christian Okoye. A young African soccer player who walked onto a college football tryout and became a football player. He was called the Nigerian Nightmare. Don't know it's a reaction video but you might enjoy it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JwxCa1csxKc.html

These aren’t nothing like seriously these aren’t close to the greatest other then a few there all newer within the last couple year a lot of these are guys just jumping over people you have so many times guys breaking 12 tackles for touchdowns or very similar. a recent guy that has a better play list than this himself is Rob Gronkowski
