A look at my current cook kit for the outdoors. This equipment is regulalry swapped out to accomodate the number of people with me, how many I am cooking for and what I may have available in terms of the food with me and wild edibles to compliment that.

Thank you for the reminder! I bought that exact same cook set ( and interlocking knife, fork and spoon set) back in the late 80s for my camping trip in the Blue ridge mountains. Copper- clad bottoms and everything. Used it on that one trip, packed away and forgot about it. Now I got to find where I stashed it. But thanks for reminding me!

Great video, I am very impressed with the little containers of seasonings and really cool use of the Altoids can. You just gave me another way of carrying things such as the bouillon cubes and salt and pepper packets..... Once again great little video and tips. thanks!!

Good kit. This is so important. so many peeps I hear, get these great cook kits, yet once there rations are gone, they suffer greatly, from malnurishment, even the transition from a well fueled body, to missing a few days of food, make ppl mentally instable. Even the coolest heads , have got to eat daily..7 days I went without a bite..a bush fast and I was so changed and realized the importance of being able to cook food from nothing. Only coals, rockboiling, sundrying,opps I'm off topic.lol

Many thanks for showing us this kit - finally something you can actually cook some food on! The ultralight single 750ml pot seems to be centred on boiling water for drinks and rehydrating food but looks to be too limited to cook food on easily. I'm working my way to a 1 litre pot, a frying pan lid, nested small kettle and nested insulated mug standing in the kettle. I've worked out an insulated mug keeps hot drinks hot for longer in the cold outdoors, a kettle means easy fill and use without food residue worries, a pot gives you a chance to cook in volume (pasta, potatoes, rice etc) while a frying pan lid provides a second cooking utensil for other ingredients that need heating but not boiling. If this can be landed without too much cost or weight this might be a winning combination! Keep up the good work!

Well, i bought a crepe pan, (basically a low sided lightweight ali frying pan, mega non-stick qualites) tried bacon & eggs on my honey stove/white box duo combo last night, performed great if only a little to hot for scrambled egg , without having to keep removing from heat but i was really impressed....

Checkout the Enjo micro fibre stuff for cleaning, they have a small scouring pad. Will lift grease with fibres, gets into the tiny holes. Simply wash (dissolve grease from cloth with soap made from ash+tallow) sunlight (UV) disinfect. Reusable and sanitary.

Hi Wayne! The set is made by Wynnster. If you search for "Wynnster stainless steel cookset" you should find a number of different variations of this set for 1, 2 or more people. some sets have additional pots and pans etc with fold out handles etc, and as far as I know all the sets come with a plastic cup and a stuff sack. Hope this helps!

Hi Gadgetdragon! Thsi has changed a lot now. Using teh 14cm Zebra Billy for a while as it compliments other things I am taking with me a bit more than this set did. I tend to swap between bits to suit my mood, the environment, who is coming with me and all that jazz, sometimes it might just be the Crusader mess tin for example if its just me. All the best and thanks for taking the time!

Hi mate, I have had that kit for some time now, a couple of years at least. It always gets a real good clean after use and I always find that SS can be a little more forgiving with burned foods. Round walled pots are easier to clean, they seem to distribute heat nicely and its easier to slide a utensil like a spatula under things. I will try a few sources for you and let you know if I get any results.

@jediknightofthewoods
@jediknightofthewoods 12 лет назад
I get your point, however, on the matter of spilling, a shallower larger bottom pot is less likely to spill over than a taller deeper pot. This set was mainly used for frying food like mushrooms, bacon etc. Boiling water was never an issue as I always have my brew kit as well, which has a GSI glacier/Tatonka mug and a stainless steel Guyot designs bottle, so water boiling/purification was covered big style! To be fair my cook kit has changed quite a bit since this video, new one on the way.
@jediknightofthewoods
@jediknightofthewoods 12 лет назад
The Honey stove would be great for soing your bacon and eggs, but with natural fuels of sticks and twigs. Let them burn down a fair bit to coals and you will have much better heat for that type of cooking. IMHO the white box, pop can or similar types of stove are great for water boiling, or for cooking up water intensive foods like pasta, rice, stews etc but are very limited for cooking on. I have just got the Folding Firebox stove as a bigger option over my hobo stove for bbq's and grilling!

Two great channels and two great lads in person as well! I dont think you can go wrong with Tenth Wonder that Foxy likes so much, great value for money! Now, in terms of cook sets, question is what type of cooking will you be doing? open fire or gas stove? I dont like aluminium due to its performance in high heat, and I am not a fan of titanium due to its cost, stainless steel is great but the heaviest choice. Zebra billie are amazing and I team mine with a crusader mess tin now. All the best!
@jediknightofthewoods
@jediknightofthewoods 11 лет назад
Its very shiny isnt it! I do always clean my kit thoroughly when I get home. To be honest with you, this cook kit ended up a crock of pants after about a year. I chopped and changed to a zebra billy then back again to this one, it got a ton of use but durability was not very good at all long term. Its a shame because I loved the component parts and the functionality of wider shallow pots. but the materials just didnt stack up. I am now using the Zebra 14cm lunchbox, like the stowaway pot.

Love your kit, looks like mine. Unfortunately, my kit has run its life's course... over a decade, and I can no longer find this wonderful little solo cook set. Everything in stores these days seems to be huge! You did not mention the name of your cookset in the video. Looking forward to your response. The fry-pan lid that serves as a plate is so out of vogue. Apparently, campers DO NOT fry any more?! There is no better egg than a fried egg. I do prefer non-stick... it is not unhealthy as long as the surface is intact.
@jediknightofthewoods

Hey! Thanks for taking the time to comment on this one! Very out of date now, and this set has long since gone to the great cook set in the sky, wasnt too thick or durable! There is however possible one way I can point you in the right direction in that I do believe that Tatonka brand has an identical looking and feeling set to this, in stainless steel. Have a search for the Tatonka Camp Set Regular. Hope that helps!

@MrBushLife Couldnt agree more. I have an interest in survival psychology (not a subject I have got round to on my channel yet cos most people like to see new shiny sharp gear stuff rather than vids on how the mind body works) but I do test my body in extremes of cold (warm is a bit difficult in the UK! :-)) and going without food for lengths of time is something I do regularly (not dangerously though) and over time I am learning to adjust myself accordingly. I Dont get cranky anymore! lol!

This set... the actual stainless steel that is...Is called the Stansport Mess Kit. I just did a review of it. Got it from Ebay... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BA30HnLzYq8.html In case your interested. I have been cooking on this thing for 3 days now in my kitchen. The copper coating is a joke...most has already came off or scratched...but the steel itself is okidokie...yes it's thin but not bad. The bail on the pot drops into the fire when used as a normal pot and not as a billy can. A simple "S" hook fixed that problem.

Thanks for watching and commenting. This kit has changed and been upgraded quite significantly now to be honest. I am using a 14cm zebra billy along with a crusader mess tin as a two part cooking option to cover all my requirements, also my kettle fits nicely into the billy as well. I dont tend to over stuff my gear just because there is space and only really take condiments that I know I will use. IMHO there is no point in taking 20 spices if I will only use 5 of them. Cheers and all the best!

AHA! So you are an American brother eh! No worries! The correct pronunciation is actually Aluminium (or al-ew-min-ee-um). The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry adopted ALUMINIUM as the standard international name for the element in 1990, but being as three years later they accepted the American version ALUMINUM I will let you off! You will have to do better than that to catch a Jedi Knight out buddy! :-) I get your patriotism though! thanks for watching & all the best!

@r91976 8 лет назад
Bro you got it all wrong, aluminium is better for cooking than steel which is better than titanium. That is if we're talking same thickness of material and same cooking surface. A coppered base one of course is even better. That's what makes this set better than your aluminum ones, the fact that it has a copper bottom and not that it is ss. But given the weight penalty, you just can't beat aluminum.

+Daniel Karlsson First off, there is no concrete evidence of that. It's been linked to Alzheimer but no "hard" proof. Secondly we're not talking about your everyday cooking pots and pans. You're gonna use your lightweight camping/backpacking cooking set how often? Tops 12 times a year (let's say a weekend each month if you are really active with your outdoor activities). I can imagine of far more hazardous things to do to your body than cooking in an aluminum cookset 12 times each year.... Thirdly, the aluminum cookset allows you to be able to cook real food while backpacking without actually burning it (good luck trying to do that with those titanium or thin ss ones).Aluminum is just plainly a lot better thermal conductor as an element compared to titanium or iron (steel) It's also lighter than ss and titanium. So it clicks all the boxes when it comes to backpacking cooking imho.

I have nothing against aluminum cookware. In fact I own a complete set of Wagner ware Int. Great cookware, very even heating. That said I also own many pieces of Revere ware copper clad stainless steel cookware and the stuff is fantastic. The cookware isn't nearly as important as the person using it. There are proper techniques for using different types of cookware, master those techniques and stainless or aluminum it doesn't really matter that much.
