Back when I was a kid( late 1960’s early 1970’s ) I was not uncommon of me to hop on my bicycle and ride from my house down to Love Field airport and back ( 20 miles give or take a few miles) and would be gone for hours. There was no gps or cell phones! If I needed to call home just used the change in my pocket and a pay phone. As far as directions was the phone book and a city map!

I can tell you what I do. I love cowboy camping when it's colder. I bought a wool blanket from harbor freight and sewed it into a sleeping bag shape. I slide my thermarest inside and sleep on it. It adds warmth and the wool protects it from embers. I even have an extra one to slip over my nylon sleeping bag for the same reason sometimes. Extra weight but worth it to both protect expensive gear and add extra warmth. The bags cost me $11 a piece.

A cheap $30 Thermarest Ridgerest accordian style foam pad or a cheap and packable $60 Thermarest ProLite inflatable pad for summer use would be more comfy for your back. A $200 Exped Down mat xp9 is nice for winter use. As for spark retardant material, it's not the lightest but either a cheap 4ft wide canvas painters tarp from Harbor Freight or a siliconized fiberglass mat material they use for stovejacks from ripstopbytheroll can work wonders. As others have mentioned, those closed cell pads from Wal-Mart would also work and cheap enough not to cry if they get burn marks.

In regards to you thanking us, we thank you, sir, for you taking time to make a channel and go out into nature, film, record and upload content, after he time it takes to review your content and then edit it, to educate us. Truly, thank you because I have learned and I continue to learn from you.

For the sleeping pad: what about combining a blow up pad with a cheap, thin thrift store type wool blanket (doesn't need to be 100% wool). Sew the blanket into a sleeve that fits the pad. Install buttons/toggles for the closure. This gives you the comfort of the blow up pad with some spark protection. It also would add some insulation value in the cold. In the summer you can take the wool sleeve off bc you won't need a big fire to keep warm anyway and that negates the spark worry. Plus, you can do a "how-to" video for the making of this revolutionary piece of gear. Call it, "The Corporal's Cover." You'll make millions!!!

I sincerely hope that once this world wide crisis is behind us that it provides us all with some lessons learned; number one of which would be to re-prioritize what it is that's important in our lives and concentrate on the only things that truly matter. To me, that's health, love and family/friends. All the money, gadgets, toys, having the latest and greatest thingamajig, etc. amounts to exactly nothing without those 3 things I mentioned. (again, at least in my opinion.) I also hope that the new-found general surge in looking out for our most vulnerable and helping our "neighbours" continues long past this pandemic. Thanks again Cpl. Hey Corporal. Man I love your videos!! Just a suggestion from a beginner hiker n soon to be camper. Could u do a video where u show us how to use a compass n maybe a map to navigate into the woods until u find a campsite. Then how u navigate back to where u started. I think it would make a good tutorial if we were to try it. You’ve done compass tutorial already but I’d like to see it in action. Thank u Sir!!

In the theme of getting out and making the best of the time we got on our hands - I took my wife out to a cup of coffee. On my (very cheap but new and untested) wood gas stove. Now, you might think that this is not a "real" enough adventure, but I am blind and my wife is visually impaired. We walked about three km, to a larger, wooded park. Set up the little stove. It was surprisingly easy, even though I had not used it before. And then, you know, literally picked some sticks of the ground and just... made some "cowboy coffee". (With Coffee Cheese, which is a Northern speciality for this country... Small pieces of baked cheese (think Halloumi) in the coffee). Again - this might not seem like a huge adventure to anyone else. But we are blind. We don't get out a lot on a NORMAL week. During the quarantine / self isolation phase here, it is near impossible to get a seeing guide. So we gave us the time to potentially get lost. And had just a very nice time outdoors.

When it comes to your “rake sticks” keep them both, lash them together to make a six tined rake with the nub for digging... 🤔

Excellent video. When I was many years younger I hunted on the move. Many a night was spent like that for a few nights in a row. The best sleeping pad/mattress that I ever had was acquired when I was in the military. It was inflatable, puncture resistant (not puncture proof) extremely well insulated (had a fleece like material on the exterior) and was shaped like our bags so it would fit in a bivy sack. The down side was that it was heavy, 3 1/2 to 4 pounds and was a bit bulky. I don't recall the manufacturer, I have scoured the internet trying to find another one with no luck. If I am able to locate them I will send you a link on Facebook so you can check them out.

I use a z-fold thermarest pad as a thermal break / anti-puncture layer and a klymit recon pad on top for comfort. It’s not much weight or bulk, the recon packs down to the size of a travel pillow. Maybe a wool surplus blanket over the pad would save you from the sparks? I’m in the same boat as you, a little comfort goes a long way... and the colder it is, the worse my knees hurt. Chris Ledoux was right about the years & miles. You’d be a great homesteader / farmer... out standing in your field. Bah dum tiss.

Not too much opportunity to practice the art of bush craft. But I was making a minimal kit before this lock down started. My back yard is 2 meters x 2 meters and I'm trying to figure out how to practice there. But necessity is the father of invention. Life is slowly returning to normal here, I emphasize the word slowly. I have lots of preping plans as soon as this lock down ends. We had Plastic tubs with canned and powdered food just for something like this. This virus has shown me the "flaws in my system" so I will make adjustments. I have your videos to thank for teaching me how to make the best of the outdoors. Thank you.

Corporal Kelly, the Thermarest RidgeRest Classic is hard to beat for a closed-cell foam pad that is comfortable(you have to try it to believe it)and durable.

I agree with the changes that inadvertently happen because of the lock down I ride my bike at night and I noticed more people sitting on their porches and fires in front yard walking with the children riding bikes with their children not very much traffic and I stopped and thought this reminds me a lot of the 60s and one positive things going to come out of this is that maybe people will slow down and learn to appreciate the small things like this

I was also a kid before the Internet age!! And I remember how much fun I had with nothing to play with except for our imaginations!!! I'm a hammocker when I go hiking, but I've often felt that a large fallen tree would be the perfect place to seek shelter when the winds are gale force. Last fall while hiking on a ridge on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia, a large tree blew down about 30 yards away. I heard the first crack and took off running with a full pack. When I realized that the tree was falling parallel to the trail, I stopped and watched it fall. The wind didn't let up, so I spent that night in a shelter at the edge of a field. A good sized tree trunk should offer protection from other falling trees. Like you, I had childhood friends who had to do face time or phone time - no cell phones. We would meet up to hop on a bicycle for a two mile ride to a good fishing pond, or a 20 mile ride to go swimming in the ocean. Other than that, we played b-ball, hit a ball around the field out back, or just went walking in the woods. We were fit by default. Thanks for the excellent video.

Sleep mat recommendation: the “Finnish Sleeping Mat” by Savotta. The size of your typical military roll mat but with a built in ground sheet. Have been using mine for at least six years now and it’s virtually bombproof. Been watching your work for nearly three years Corp and you’ve come a long way since then. Keep up the great work brother.

Outdoor survival training is worth paying for. It can save your life. You may not be planning to go camping but while driving, your vehicle can shutdown, you have run off the road, or snow blockage and suddenly you and perhaps your family are out for the night or two and you need to know what do. Survival training is important for that one time when you really need it.

We're doing good in South Ga the little town I'm in Adel only has seven cases of covid 19 as a fire medic I don't get to sit at home but like alot of things I've done in life I knew what I was signing up for. That being said thank you Shawn for all you do

for a sleeping pad, i just use a thicker yoga mat, its more then a bit bulky on the bottom of the pack but its squishy and meant to be able to be stretched out on and in 3 season conditions does okay keeping insulated, havnt done a winter test yet but i imagine with an extra blanket or something on top itd come through

You could call the coffee "corpachino". You could use an inflatable mattress with a canvas sleeve sewn together to slide the inflatable into, like a canvas brouse bag. If you use good canvas, the weave will be tight enough to prevent sparks from getting thru. If you made one out of a welding blanket, it would be fire proof. It would be a bit heavier though. Any way you look at it, inflatables are the comfort, all you need to do is protect them. Maybe even a wool blanket brouse bag.

Why not run your tarp on the underside of the log? this would give you a lesser pitch and give you more room under it. I hope you know what I mean. Small logs I go over but big ones like that I go under. Another outstanding video.

50 years ago I went on a snowshoe trip and deliberately did not take spoon or fork. I took dehydrated potatoes and jerky strips and used the jerky to stir and eat the potatoes. I took some raisins and hot chocolate. Calories enough, spice from the jerky.

Thermarest ridge rest and z light are good closed cell foam pads buta littleexpensive. Alp mountaineering also makes good foam pads. For air pads you can't beat Klymit for quality and price. Thanks for your efforts.

I caught this video bc of the minimal equip. You mentioned an online course. Id like a little more “security” before I start solo backpacking trips. If something were to happen I’d feel more comfortable troubleshooting issues. I’ve always found something helpful with your videos. Much appreciated.

I dont suggest blow up pads, they are comfortable sure. The best pad I have found is the USMC thermarest from keepshooting. com they are $9. If you want an inflatable I would go with a Klymit inertia blow up pad, ontop of a foam pad, possible with another thin foam pad on top of that, something like the gossamer gear 1/8" thick pad

shawn I'm interested in an online class. however my time is not my own. Single dad, special needs son. I've camped & fished all my life but it was tent and car camping, not back packing or bushcraft/field camping. I'm a former (long time ago) boy scout so I know some rudimentary knots, etc... forgot all I ever learned about using a compass, way points etc. I'd love to learn how to properly sharpen my axe, my knives, finer skills in fire starting, in wood working/carving, recommended/opinions on footwear, clothing, etc, etc.

Thats the Truth buddy ✌ we was the Gen were NES and Gameboy was rising. But we spended our time outside. We doesnt matter ifts rainy or windy. We stay outside, fix up some emergency shelters, catch worms and play Truth or dare. It was the greatest Time of my life. Ooohrahhh from Germany Bro 🤙

Hi Shawn. Just a quick suggestion - hope this may help... An inflatable sleeping mat will obviously provide the best comfort and insulating properties so why not combine it inside one of these.... Bushcraft Outfitters 5' x 8' Multipurpose Emergency-Survival Tarp (MEST) - their multicam versions are fire retardant. Fold in half lengthways, tie the corner loops together and insert an inflatable sleep mat. You'll have a much comfier, warmer solution. Your mat will also stay dry, have added protection from any rough ground it's put on, and it will also be campfire spark proof.

I think using those Leaf and Lawn bags is a great idea, and I haven't seen any other survival channel do that ( albeit, I haven't done a lot of looking). If it was up to me on minimal gear, I'd take a whole box of them with me, and let me tell you why.... Some years ago I got trapped overnight at work. It was one of those situations where I was pulling an 18 hour day, and the location had to be manned so long as the doors were unlocked. The building was unheated, and it was 17F inside, and the power went out a half hour before I was supposed to leave so the doors would not lock. So I'm freezing, with no power, obligated to stay there, so I went into the store room looking for anything to keep warm with and found... Leaf and Lawn bags. I used 3 of them to wrap up in. Admittingly, it was still cold, but they kept me warm enough to say alive until help could come the following morning. Edit: oh and, I would up pulling a 24 hour shift that day.

Brother I haven't been able to sleep on the ground in over a decade! I make it a point to use a raised bed, tying an oilskin tarp around two wrist thick logs to make a wide bed and folding a good queen sized Wool blanket to lay on top for a cushy insulator! Alot of times I'd just use fold a 2nd larger Oilskin tarp around the blanket and use a 2nd blanket & a poncho liner with the 2nd tarp and fold myself in on top of the Cot I built and use a fire for a radiant heat, give the mountain whether to Warm up & I'll be happy to do a Small intro short video on it!

Hey Corp...why not try putting coffee, not instant, in a cup of water overnight in a little baggy made from a coffee filter. Then cook over a fire in the morning..... see if that gives you a much better cup of coffee....
