Solomonster has heard plenty of Hulk Hogan tall tales over the years and finds them generally amusing. But, sometimes, you can only take so much nonsense. He discusses the WWE Legends A&E biography on the NWO and, more specifically, its coverage of the Sting vs. Hollywood Hogan main event from Starrcade 1997 including Hogan's nonsensical claims about the finish of the match, Eric Bischoff's past version of events which was never mentioned in this special, and what the referee for the match has said about the "fast count that never was" that night.

The way the Sting-Hogan match was booked at Starrcade was like Hogan was the baby face and getting screwed by Bret at the end. Nothing about this has ever made sense. 1. They thought Sting looked frail, like he hadn't worked out. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that's true, it's not like the day of Starrcade was the first time they actually saw him in months. They would have seen him during the go-home Nitro -- and several times before that. If he looked frail at Starrcade, they would have known that before the day of the show. And if he looked frail on Nitro, he wasn't going to bulk up and look great 6 days later. Conversely, if he looked great on Nitro, he wasn't going to look completely weak 6 days later. 2. Where Sting screwed up, the "fast" count was obviously not fast. But he also made no efforts to kick out. If they were doing the fast count finish, Sting should have at least gotten his shoulders up before a normal three-count would have been counted. He didn't. It would be kind of like if I raced Usain Bolt in the 100-meter dash and he started early. Yes, he started early. But he'd also win by such a margin that it wouldn't really have mattered. 3. The craziest part about this, they had Hogan and Sting wrestle the next night on Nitro. The only play there is to have Sting beat up Hogan and pin him clean. Instead, they did another screwy finish. They pushed it until SuperBrawl in February when...they gave Sting the title. Like, if that was gonna be the end result, they should have done it at Starrcade. Finally, by this point, Hogan had a reputation for being sure all eyes were on him, no matter what. At the end of Wrestlemania 4, he was in the ring with Macho Man and Elizabeth, celebrating harder than either of him. At the end of Wrestlemania 6, he did everything he could to be sure the attention was on him, not the Ultimate Warrior (and he's even acknowledged that). Knowing that, it's really hard to give him the benefit of the doubt and believe anything that paints him in a positive light.

Solomonster, you touched on point I hear a few people talk about: how confusing it was to see Hogan take 90% of the match. I was a young kid and didn’t know how much of wrestling was real. Naturally, I was dumbfounded when Sting, who had been beating up the entire NWO, including Hogan ,by himself, couldn’t just whoop Hogan in a matter of minutes. Bret actually wanted to be the referee for Sting vs Hogan. Hogan never explained why he didnt want that. Instead hes the referee for the match before, some joke match with Bischoff. At the Souled Out PPV Hogan flat out refused to appear because Bret Hart was there. I was really hoping for a Sting vs Hart trilogy. Similar to the Steamboat vs Flair trilogy of the 80s.

I just came up with a simple finish that could've worked just fine. Hogan irishwhips Sting into the ref, gets the big boot, leg drop. No ref. Bret comes out to help, revives the ref in time for Sting to recover and get the scorpion death drop. Ref counts to 3. There. That's all you need to do. Bischoff gives himself an out if the crowd doesn't accept Sting as the champion, Hogan doesn't look weak, and Bret can still get some jabs in at WWE about bad officiating. Bret tried his best, he didn't intend to screw over Hogan. If the crowd doesn't accept Sting, just have Hogan beat him at Superbrawl.
@josephdelledonne2098
@josephdelledonne2098 10 месяцев назад
Bischoff was worried about making Hogan mad. Also, it's possible Patrick just messed up the count, it's possible he doesn't want to admit he screwed up. However, it all falls on Hogan and Bischoff. Hogan changing things and confusing everyone caused all this because like you said, he was selfish, and it's Bischoff's fault for not saying no, we're doing this.
@RightCenterBack321
@RightCenterBack321 5 месяцев назад
One thing I want to take issue with - the kick-out makes sense because then Sting can more credibly argue the count was fast. If anything, the fast-count finish doesn't work unless Sting attempts to kick out. Otherwise, it's a straight pinfall, albeit a fast one. Otherwise, I think we've pretty much established a broad framework of what happened: - Nick Patrick, whom I believe over everyone else, says he first spoke with Eric Bischoff, who told him to do a normal count. This tells me, at that time, they'd decided to have Hogan pin Sting 100% clean. - When Hogan spoke with Patrick, he told him to count nice and slow. - Then when Patrick spoke with Sting, he was told to "rapid-fire" the count. According to the A&E Biography, Bischoff convinced Hogan to put Sting over, except with a fast count to force a restart of the match. So it makes sense the last person Patrick spoke to told him to do a fast count, since it seems they decided upon it fairly late in the day. The idea Hogan initially insisted upon not jobbing to Sting at all, at the biggest PPV in company history, is the greatest revelation of all. Imagine if that's the finish we got and how much worse things would've been. Ironically, Conrad Thompson argued that would've been the better alternative, though I disagree. On the other hand, Bischoff had never revealed that Hogan initially insisted upon pinning Sting clean, which calls into question his credibility. As for Hogan, what a snake.

With Sting essentially being my favorite wrestler ever, this annoys the hell out of me. As a young teenager, I thought to myself "Yea, Sting won, and I'm happy, but he got beat fairly though...why was Bret Hart angry?" These were my literal thoughts as a 13 year old watching. Most of the people at school who were fans (there were a lot) thought the same thing: A well-built angle with a twilight zone type of finish. All because of a God damn tan...

This really was the moment that WCW lost their grip on the Monday Night Wars. Starrcade was on 12/28/97 and the WWF had regained the ratings advantage by April (after Wrestlemania 14 - Austin era begins 03/29/98.) I know they put the belt on Sting at SuperBrawl (02/22/98) but the damage was done. Later that year Sting became a member of the NWO Wolfpac (Ugh), they ruined Goldberg's run as champion, followed by the Fingerpoke of Doom (01/04/99), which was the final nail in the coffin. In one year WCW went from the top wrestling company in the world, printing money hand over fist to going out of business two years later. Incredible.

What should've been the easiest finish in wrestling history turned into an absolute mess. Hulk Hogan should've gotten kicked in the stomach, Scorpion Death Drop, Sting pins Hogan clean for the 1-2-3. Instead, a year long buildup was trashed. Hogan didn't even need the WCW title because he didn't do anything with the title. He didn't elevate it, make it feel like it was the most important belt in all of wrestling-the title, to him, was just a shiny toy he got to show off. An absolute train wreck. Terrible end to what should've been the greatest conclusion to wrestling's best storyline.

That match was a total mess. The story of the match was Sting was supposed to get screwed, but it made it looked like Hogan got screwed when the referee did a slow count, and Sting didn't kick out of it. Worst of all, it made Bret Hart looked stupid and confused. And how the match ended, Hogan didn't tap out, or say "I quit," but Bret told them to ring the bell, similar to the Montreal Screwjob where Vince McMahon yelled at the ring announcer to ring the bell when HBK locked Bret in a sharpshooter. Then the next night on Nitro, Bischoff had to fix the angle by making Hogan got screwed by Bret Hart. Yes, Hogan sabotaged the match for his own selfish ego. Hogan will never admit to his stupidity, just like the Bash at the Beach 2000 incident.

I don’t know why people are surprised or angered by this. Honestly, those of us old enough to remember seeing or hearing about this live as it happened, have long since suspected that Hogan politicked or exercised his “creative control” contract clause his to have the finish changed to make himself look good, because he didn’t wanna lose to Sting clean, despite it making complete and total sense to do so. Top guys in pro wrestling have always played politics. Even some of your favorites, even some of the all time greats. That’s how they continued to keep their top spot for so long.

When it comes to Hulk Hogan, you take the whole package with this man. On one hand, if it weren't for Hulk Hogan, neither WWE nor WCW would have reached the heights that they did. Without Hogan, there never would have been an nWo or WrestleMania. But on the other hand, Hulk Hogan also was one of the key factors that ultimately led to WCW's demise. Plus, all of the people that Hogan screwed over, like Bret Hart and so many others. It's not one extreme with Hogan or the other. You take the whole package.

Not only Sting was screwed and his momentum vanished because of that silly finish, but also Bret Hart was made look like an idiot in his first night with WCW since he made restart the match after the finish was fair and square, so he looked like the heel in that story. I think it was all an Hulk Hogan power move to stop the 2 hottest acts the company had going from overshadowing him and the NWO. Just think about the fact that Bret was randomly put into the Zbyzsko Bischoff dynamic rather than immediatamente launched into the main event scene despite being by far the most interesting man in all of pro wrestling at that point. It would have been like AEW having Cm Punk paired with Daniel García and the 2.0 after he debuted from his 7 yrs hiatus...Oh yeah, that happened too 😂

It wasn’t Starrcade 97, or even Goldberg losing or even the Finger poke of DOOOOM. WCW was still doing 4’s in the ratings until march 99, it was WWF having a more edgier brand that appealed more to the casual audience which made up 90% of the audience at the time . WCW’s true fan base was the ratings in the last twelve months of its existence much like WWF at the time chalking up 4/5/6’s in the ratings in the 90’s but getting 000’s numbers for PPV’s . The millions were casual viewers and the 000’s were the die hards who bought the PPV’s
