It always pisses me off when people say “RIP Chris Benoit”. Vickie Guerrero made a great point in the Dark Side of the Ring episode. If Chris had just decided to take his own life that day and nothing else, it still would have been horrifically depressing but his legacy still would be secured and MOST IMPORTANTLY, two other people would still be alive. The guy murdered his family and killed his wife in such a way that she felt as much pain as humanly possible before she died. He didn’t just shoot her in the head quickly. He brutally tortured her for minutes until the life was ripped from her body. And he took the life of a little boy who was robbed of the chance to see how his life would have turned out. Chris’ death was sad in its own right but no one should forgive or forget what he did to Nancy and Daniel. I respect Benoit’s work as a wrestler and acknowledge the role that his concussions played in his actions. But I will never grieve him and pretend that he’s some innocent victim in his own story. I hope for the best for David going forward though. He has to carry the burden of his father for the rest of his life and I hope he can find sustained happiness.

you remind me that before the Dark Side of the Ring episodes on Benoit in 2020, I really didn't understand Nancy Benoit's contribution to the wrestling business as a manager for WCW and ECW. The fact that she will be forgotten and unrecognized is a huge tragedy it's also a painful tragedy to think that Daniel Benoit would be 22 today if Chris wasn't a monster who killed his son

I was reading something about the Benoit tragedy a few weeks ago and they said that Chris’s heart was in bad shape…..I think they said it was like 2 or 3 times the normal size and he had heart disease too Plus his liver and kidneys were fucked up due to almost 2 decades of drug use steroid abuse and alcoholism…..combine that w/ the condition his brain was in at the time of his death and they said that if he hadn’t killed himself he probably would’ve been dead within a year Now I’m not saying this excuses what he did (cause it doesn’t) but WWE in my mind bears some of the blame for this too…..I mean watch the Dark Side of the Ring episode on this-Chris had been displaying this odd behavior for quite some time (@ least since Eddie passed away) plus the fact that he erroneously passed a Wellness Policy test about two weeks before the murder/suicide but it was clear that he was juicing up just by looking @ him I found the WWE Wellness Policy on their website and while things like synthetic testosterone HGH and certain painkillers r technically banned (cause I asked my mom and she said that u can get seriously high off certain prescription drugs) if u can get a legit prescription from your doctor then u can use that as a sort of loophole within the rules Vicki said it best on the show-if Chris had just committed suicide it still would’ve been a tragedy but at least his legacy would be intact but instead he burned his legacy and history in the business to ashes in just one weekend

@@lexkanyima2195 yes it was…..everyone who knew Chris said that after Eddie passed he was never the same-when Eddie was going through his drug issues Chris was the one who took care of him and would tuck him into bed and make sure he didn’t do something like choke on his vomit Vicki said that Eddie and Chris hated each other when they first met but over time they built a mutual respect that became a friendship….hell during the Dark Side of the Ring episode Chavo said that when he told Chris that Eddie had passed all Chris did was release this deep wail of heartbreak almost like he had lost a family member Maybe he should’ve taken an extended leave of absence after Eddie’s funeral but I think that the reason he didn’t was because maybe he was using work as a way to deal w/ the grief he was feeling but even Nancy could see things were going downhill fast (her sister said that about a year before the murders Nancy had wanted Chris to step away from the business) Plus let’s not forget that in addition to Eddie Chris lost several other friends in the business within a couple years of each other (Big Bossman Miss Elizabeth Johnny Grunge Black Cat etc) but I think Eddie’s death was the final straw and like Solomonster said if Eddie was alive it probably would’ve only delayed the inevitable

A couple of things to keep in mind: 1. Nancy has filed for divorce in 2003 (before Eddie died) and even issued a restraining order from him. 2. Then when you look at the timeframe and see the wrestlers from that era who are no longer competing it feels like an eternity. It must've happened when he lied about his wife and son being sick with food poisoning, and the fact that he put Bibles next to their dead bodies, and left them in the house for _TWO DAYS._ Sandra (Nancy's sister) also said Benoit Googled on the internet, how to break his own neck. I absolutely believe that if Eddie was still alive, that tragedy would’ve been prevented. To say Eddie was Chris’s #1, very Best Friend in the entire world would be an understatement . Chris Benoit LOVED Eddie Guerrero. He saw Eddie as family. They were brothers. When Eddie was going through his problems and demons with drug and alcohol abuse, the one person who was always there for him was Chris Benoit. So it doesn’t surprise me one bit to hear that there was a noticeable shift or change in Benoit after Eddie died. How could there not?! When you lose someone THAT close and THAT near and dear to you so suddenly, that’s gonna fuck you up beyond repair! Eddie Guerrero’s death DESTROYED Chris Benoit. If Eddie is still alive, Chris may not go down that dark path or been in such a severe depressive mental state that it comes to that. At the very least, Eddie would have caught on much faster than anyone else. If casual friends or colleagues were noticing Chris changing things up or acting odd in the weeks leading up to his death, you don’t think Eddie wouldn’t have noticed? He probably would’ve been able to see things nobody else could and been able to approach Chris about it in ways nobody else could and Chris might have been more able and willing to confide in Eddie that he wouldn’t have been with anyone else. Jericho mentioned on his podcast with Chavo that he had missed a call from Benoit on the morning of or before the tragedy and how he thought that might have been Benoit’s last plea for help and that if Jericho had been able to answer, then MAYBE he might have been able to say or do something to stop it. If Eddie was still around, I have no doubt he would’ve been able to get through to Benoit in ways nobody else would and perhaps all 4 of them might still be alive today.

She gives some really good insight into what was going on in Chris and Nancy's lives in the lead up to the murders/suicide. She also gets her facts mixed up a bunch during that interview which i'm surprised noone's called her out on. For instance, she stated Benoit researched the way to break his neck and broke it by pulling the pin breaking his neck instantly when Chris's autopsy states he didn't have any damage to his neck area other than of the damage from the cable around his neck. The police report also states the only thing he researched that weekend was about resurrecting a dead boy which gives you insight into how fucked up his thinking process probably was that weekend. Chris also killed himself by putting the pin in at 240 pounds while adding dumbells to the stack so it was heavy enough to lift him. He also held dumbells in his hands to counter the gravity pulling him up to further cut off his air flow and cause his strangulation. I feel awful for Nancy's family and Chris's family for what happened but don't put lies out there when the police report and autopsy file say otherwise

This was when CTE research really took off and Chris would have been the shining example and regardless of what he did, WWE is not going to be let off the hook because wrestlers were warning that Chris was doing too many head shots with his finisher and behaving in an odd way even before Eddie passed away, WWE let him slip through the cracks and if they had not by getting him the help he was begging for, maybe Nancy and her son would still be alive today.

It was a couple days prior when my friend, who was big into wrestling at the time, watch the episode when Vince's limousine exploded. But, it was a top story of Chris' death. I was blown away and I thought it had to be a fire or intrusion or something along the lines. Then, when more evidence was gathered and turned out he killed his family and himself and I was taken back. I couldn't fathom the thought that anyone could do that. Over the years we learned more about his CTE and events leading up to event....it was inevitable. I will never look at him as the same. Was he a great wrestler? Without a doubt. I still look back at his matches and don't have the conflicting opinions. But, this man will never be remembered as the greatest wrestler cause of this and it ruin any chances of hall of fame and wreck the people that survived, like his other son.

I don’t remember which WWE show it was. This was back when they had brought back ECW so they were running three brands at the time and this was also the last year I watched wrestling on a weekly basis. I was just getting sick of the way WWE was treating some of the stars I had loved over the years and I thought the shows were getting worse but I was a fan of Crispin wall so I don’t remember which show was getting ready to come on but I remember Vince McMahon appearing on the TV and saying that the night before the had given a tribute to Chris been Wall but they didn’t realize what it would come to light in the next 24 hours and they apologize for the tribute show and they then said that they would never mention his name on WWE television again. Because this was during the time I was falling out of love with pro wrestling I wasn’t online following all the backstage stuff like I had been years earlier so that’s what made me start digging into what happened and then shortly after that in the following week came all the wrestlers on all these shows like Larry King, etc. I’m not saying Vince McMahon is a good guy or anything like that I think he’s a complete scumbag and a hateful person to be honest but I did think it was unfair that everyone was targeting him in the WWE and basically blaming WWE and Vince McMahon for what Chris did. For all the faults of WWE over the years when you compare them to other promotions I actually think they have done the best job taking care of their wrestlers physical well-being. I’m not saying that they are completely innocent when it comes to wrestlers health but when you compare them to other promotions I think they’re one of the better ones when it comes to that sort of thing. I don’t think it’s WWE‘s fault for all the crippled ECW wrestlers that spent seven years in ECW and then maybe wrestled three matches at WWE for the reason that they have 12 concussions and scars all over their body.

I don’t think it’s really well known, and it’s understandable why it’s not well known but when this tragedy happened, there was apparently a rumor (of course never confirmed) that Chris Benoit was allegedly having an affair with Michelle McCool. Not to mention that his relationship with Nancy was toxic at this point. All we can do is speculate but I personally think that Nancy confronted him about this, and probably other issues, and either had threatened to leave him or had decided to leave him and sadly that may have been what triggered him to do the unthinkable. Please let me stress that obviously, that’s no justification for him doing what he did. Daniel would be 22 years old today had this not happened. I do not agree with Solomonster's cynical take on Benoit. I can't believe this is going to be a controversial comment, even 15 years later, even though it shouldn't be for a variety of reasons including humanity's still processing science, the many unanswered questions about the brain and how it functions, the very delicate nature of the mind and the neurons sending messages, etc, but here it is. People still blame Benoit for what he did to his family as if he had complete agency over himself and his thoughts. For 22 years, this man put his body and his brain on the line to entertain us. This man was dealt some of the most viscous blows to the head through a variety of acts, including chair shots. His main finisher was jumping from the top turnbuckle and landing on somebody with his head. To write this guy off as somebody evil, is to be disingenuous. Even his actions. His actions were unfortunate, not evil. That term connotes not only intent but malicious intent. Because of profitability and $$$, society and the NFL to this day REFUSES to acknowledge and aid in any scientific studies concerning head trauma that a lot of its personnel experience on the field. Corporations fight accusations and count the money, we, the fans, clap our hands in entertainment like seals, but when something tragic like this happens, all of us who played a part point our corrupted fingers at the athletes/entertainers, instead of ourselves. I disagree. I can not in good faith wash my hands of it and say that because I wasn't in that house at that time that the act was committed, that I'm innocent. Absolutely not. We're all guilty. People do not want to admit it. They do not want to admit they had a hand in this. It's human nature.

I think the Benoit murder-suicides and Owen Hart's death are two of the most horrific tragedies in the wrestling business because both of them could have been prevented. Still until this day, for all the improvements that WWE has made they are (Vince) is still responsible for both of those tragedies. Benoit had brain damage from years of slamming his head into the mat from diving headbutts and mostly likely from taking chair shots to the head as well. At some point w/Benoit, somebody from management or Vince should have took Benoit away from the ring and had him checked out and if he refused then he couldn't wrestle until he got it done. As far as Benoit the wrestler he was probably one of the Top 10 technical wrestlers of that era (right behind The Hitman) but when I think about what he did to his wife in child that alone completely erases all the accomplishments he had in wrestling. One of the greatest and last best WrestleManias in WM XX, (before WWE just started to gradually decline) I can't even go back and watch Benoit's World Title win or any of his matches knowing what he did.

Sorry, I'm usually a fan, but the insistence on downplaying or outright ignoring CTE and how fundamentally it changes a person, makes anything else said on this topic moot. Obviously what happened to Nancy and Daniel was a tragedy! But to imply that Chris just did this because he was bored, that he wasn't also living in his own private hell and at that point was of a sound mind? For starters it's counter-intuitive to everything we've learned about head trauma, tau proteins and how those two things affect the brain.
