That Sugar sure isn't very bright. When Daphne tells the old millionaire that she's a man and he says "Nobody is perfect" that made me laugh out loud. This movie was so much fun to watch. A great Classic.
"Nobody's perfect" is hilarious of course, but this ending is also extremely heartwarming for Sugar. For the first time in her life, a man actually cares about her. By telling her that she deserves better and shouldn't stay with him, and repeating word-for-word all the things she told him about her past hardships with saxophonists, Joe proves himself to be the opposite of all the men who've broken Sugar's heart. He actually listens when she talks to him, to the point where he can still remember the details she mentioned briefly in passing, like "sweet end of the lollipop," "coleslaw in the face," "old socks," and "squeezed-out toothpaste tube." He WANTS her to "do herself a favor" and have what she deserves, and tells her so, regardless of how it would leave him heartbroken. That's love. No wonder she stays with him and urges him to talk her out of it.
Marilyn Monroe gives a great performance and should have been nominated at leas for the Oscar if not win the Award. Superb support from Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis, and especially the peerless Joe E Brown. In hindsight this classic comedy may have been to daring for the Academy in 1959 with only Lemmon being nominated. Ben Hur swept the Oscars that year with Charlton Heston winning Best Actor. Kudos the great Billy Wilder for creating a masterpiece.
Which is honestly a blessing! Osgood will ensure Daphne/Jerry is set for life, and with the diamond bracelet to sell, Joe and Sugar will be alright too. Osgood also certainly has more than enough money for them all to travel far away from the Mafia's reach.
Well Sugar might still get the sweet end of the lollipop - she sticks with Joe, and Joe has to stick with Jerry, and Jerry's stuck with Osgood, then they'll all be living comfortably but confusedly on the yacht, living on the run from the Chicago mobsters
Coincidentally, the song, Runnin Wild was previously used in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Cartoons in 1940s most especially Red Hot Riding Hood (1943). Although, the MGM Cartoons currently owned by Warner Bros. via Turner, while this film remains by MGM under Amazon (part of post-1952 United Artists library).
great movie, jack was brilliant in this,i just can't stop watching over and over his scenes/lines.And Marilyn..what can i say..i'm a big fan of her's.Tony is good to.awesome movie, great and sooo funny end:p
ending was something to be desired. pretty short movie too. i could have done so much more with Monroe's character. Curtis was limited (did he die in 2010 or was it 2000?) i believe it was 2010 at age 85 or close to it. rumor had it he had a lot of women in his day.....but it's only a rumor.
Thank you Francesca, for this is my all-time favorite movie! Since you do not own the MGM Copyright, is that the reason why parts 9, 11, and 12 are missing?
I'm curious to know what happened after this. Jerry wasn't gay so I doubt he got it on with Osgood but he did want his divorce and big payday from the alimony checks...yet I doubt he had the heart to put Osgood through that, especially after he saved him and Joe from the mobsters.
Hard to believe, but they thought it stank and just left it in until they came up with something better...but they never did. It wasn't until they saw the audience reaction that they knew they had struck gold.
I like the way they are running the high heels before they said they could hardly walk on. You see when you have a comedy you have to have people running around for no good reason, even hiding under a dead body that was delivered to a fancy hotel. This is the most over rated POC ever.
Great to see this movie here. I fell in love with this when i first watched it as a teenager and it opened my eyes to old b/w movies, although nothing beats the final lines of Osgood! Brilliant acting from Curtis and Lemmon also Marilyn takes the mick out of her sex symbol image in her role of Sugar Kane. Pure class thanks for the upload 😊
It is not only a very entertaining movie. It also anticipates the postmodern irritating games with signs and meanings in a persuading wonderful manner.
Thank you for uploading. I just finished my paper on the tango yacht scene and this helped me reevaluate the text. It also helped me find a new appreciation for the film. Cheers.
Brilliant, I watched a recording of the film on my tv and this part was cut off at the end (possibly too many overlapping recordings) so this has done the job 👍
