I'm a gay man and I really don't think its an issue for straight actors to portray gay characters since that could end up forcing actors who are closeted or choose not to be open about their sexuality to have to out themselves to have to portray their own identity in roles, and there's a lot of gray area in terms of sexuality in general, especially since there are so many sexual orientations and sexuality is often fluid. That being said, straight actors who do play queer characters definitely have a responsibility to be respectful of queer people and knowledgeable of queer culture so they don't perpetuate stereotypes - there also needs to be queer writers and producers overseeing the performance. I don't think "gayface" is really an appropriate term because sexuality is not all equivalent to race and it shouldn't be compared to blackface, but i do agree that corden's portrayals of gay people are offensive - but they're offensive because they portray gay people with negative stereotypes, not because he's straight.
I agree with most of the stuff in this video, but the idea that only gay actors should be able to play gay people is problematic at best. Actors are called actors for a reason; they act. You say that they are acting like a stereotype, but that is more up to the writer. A straight actor is able to portray a non-stereotypical gay character. They constantly portray things they are not, being gay is no different. What people don’t realise is that if we were to have only gay actors portray gay characters, those actors would be typecast and would never get any non-gay roles, severely limiting their work possibilities. (And anyway, surely if straight actors can’t portray gay characters, gay actors can’t portray straight characters?) We need to create less separation between people, not more. But for some reason nowadays people want to create stronger walls between identities, clearly separating people from each other.
If its typecasting you're worried about, THAT is the writer's responsibility to not write a character that is a stereotype. It is the actor's choice to take on a role, and in this case corden chose to take on the role of a character who is a flamboyant gay man. While I feel comparing it to a white person doing blackface for a role is extreme, its the closest comparison I have. I disagree that "if no straight actors can play gay characters, then no gay actors can play straight characters" because of the inequalities in 1) number of roles and 2) many people are not comfortable coming out until they are established in a profession and their career is secure. In an ideal world, sure. Gay actors shouldn't play straight people either. But unfortunately inequality exists and gay actors are more likely to face discrimination.
I also disagree that identities are creating walls. They are helping people come to terms with who they are and how they interact with the world. I will not discuss this any further.

But you quickly state that straight actors shouldn't play gay men. Instead of being so defensive about your point of view - this "missing the point" joke is classic avoidance - why don't you pay attention to what they are saying? Because it's a slippery slope when you start in with the "only this person should be playing these parts". If you're so supposed to be all inclusive, what does it matter if a straight is playing gay, or a gay is playing straight?

You can’t say a straight actor can’t play a gay character. They’re actors, they pretend to be characters for a living, it’s art. By that logic an American can’t play a Brit, or a Jew can’t play a Christian. Everything is based on the realm of believability, not of identity outside work itself.

What you're not understanding here, is that the gay stereotypes a straight person portrays when playing a gay character that gets them praise for their acting skills among straight people are the same stereotypes used to justify violence against gay people. As long as those stereotypes and beyond stereotypes, the very fact of being gay; means that you are in danger of being assaulted, left to fend on your own as a minor or murdered, straight people don't get to play gay characters free of criticism.

It certainly can seem like a slippery slope. However, the more we make fun of or demonize things from other cultures that seem "strange" to us, the more we "otherize" (for lack of a better word) people of those cultures, and the easier it becomes to dehumanize them. Referring back to the original petition, the girl who posted it said that the segment reminded her of being a kid and other kids making fun of her for what she brought for lunch. I think that's a really powerful and simple statement.

The Patrick Stuart thing I will always disagree with. Patrick called him out publicly and in front of a big audience. What was he supposed to do? His response was pretty good. They're Brits they're humor is almost entirely banter. He didn't need to make an apology and his joke after was pretty good. It was silly and in jest. Patrick also precedes to make fat jokes about James (a big insecurity of his), again in front of the huge audience. Imo, James reacted fine to being shamed in front of hundreds. Patrick was very much being the rude one there. The Weinstein jokes and the Asian insensitivity are gross though. Also, didn't the VFX team completely remove the anuses from the cats in the movie? Sounds like they were the only thing improving it.

Craig Ferguson isn't doing "gay face" because he's not trying to pass for gay. He does a very over the top voice with a wink and nod to the audience. His bits are punctuation to his comedy, not a character he keeps for the length of a show, which would be wrong.

In an ideal world, sure. Unfortunately we still live in a world where many lgbtq+ folks don't feel safe out of the closet, and may not be "out" and may not want to play gay roles for fear of being outed. Additionally, there are far more straight roles than there are gay ones.

seems to me that the person who hates james corden the most is probably james corden. I'm no fan of James Corden. The opposite in fact. But I disagree with some of your reasons for disliking him. Any Asian immigrant trying to fit into Western culture wouldn't be so offended by the disgust at Asian cuisine. It's not like they were consuming late night Western media while knowing so little about Western diet.
