When I decided to replace my ancient Canon DSLR with a mirrorless system I narrowed my selection down to the Sony a6000 and the Olympus OMD M10. After several weeks of more research I decided to go the micro 4/3 route with the OMD M10 due to its ergonomics, in-body image stabilization, relatively small physical size lenses and very large selection of reasonably priced Olympus and Panasonic lenses. I know that the a6000 with its larger, higher resolution sensor can ultimately take better photos for printing at very large print sizes, but that is something I never do. Most of my prints are 4x6, 5x7, 8x12 and 13x19. While the Olympus OMD is best for me, I recognize that others may be more inclined towards the a6000, especially if you shoot a fair amount of video where it is much better than the Olympus camera.
I'm buying a new camera in a few weeks and I've boiled it down to Fuji X-T1, Olympus E-M1 and the Sony A6000. I feel like the Sony wins because of price vs performance. I like the ergonomics and the way they've placed the EVF to avoid nose prints on the screen. Only thing I wish the A6000 had, was a touch screen and higher resolution EVF, but I have a feeling that those features will be implemented in it's future replacement. At least the touch screen, since they've put that on the A5100.
So at this point, what is the go to aftermarket lens for the a6000? Anything in the $300-400 range? I plan to buy this camera very soon. Is the default lens good enough? Or should I buy just the body?
I have the a7s and getting another for video. I'm debating what to do for stills. How do you feel this would compare with a canon 6d? Which is what I'm selling. Thanks
better lens ecosystem than micro 4/3's ... NO, not even close (and I own a a6000 and an a7s(love this camera)). I'm considering dropping the a6000 (which I do like) and going back to micro 4/3's because of the lens selection and prices. (25mm 1.4, 45mm 1.8 , 42.5 1.2, 60mm macro and 75 1.8) Where are those in the sony ecosystem?
11FPS is great but every review I've ready says it doesn't focus for each shot so if your subject is fast moving you won't get many in focus captures. A couple of other youtube reviewers have shown this is the case in real world tests. I love Sony, I have 30x zoom compact and I loved the a7r which I got to borrow from someone for two weeks but for APS-C I prefer the Fuji X-T1, the picture quality is great, there are almost 20 lenses available (plus all the legacy glass you can use with adapters) and the EVF is amazing. I should note that I don't do video so that doesn't matter to me and that certainly could sway opinion for someone who thinks video is important.
I have an a6000, and some bursts are floor less in terms of focussing and others are a bit hit and miss (about 25% to 20% out of focus ) , but for the price point of the camera i think the bursts are amazing , i can't really ask for it to do perfect constant bursts like a 7d mk2 or 1dx. And comparing to the rest of the aps-c mirrorless market in terms of speed the a6000 from my uses and comparisons performs better in bursts then the nx 30, xt-1 EOS m and xe 2.
I can't confirm that _you won't get many in focus captures_. In July I went to a flight show of birds of prey. I used the a6000 with my SEL55210 (I don't have the SEL70200G yet). I shot in RAW only, speed priority with 1/1600 and 1/2000 of a sec, continuous shooting Hi, AF-C with AF-Lock on. First of all, you need a really fast SD-card ( better more of them). If you fire two seconds, that's 23 pics and the buffer is full. I recently bought a Sandisk Extreme Pro 16 GB, that writes the files in about a third of the time a Transcend Class 10 needs. I'm really surprised how fine the AF-C with AF-Lock on works. I focused on the bird while it was seated and then fired away when it was flying towards me or flying by long side. With the 5N I had maybe 5 good shots out of a hundred. Now, with the a6000, results are significant better. I shot some series with each shot coming out sharp, watching them fast is like a flicker book. Considering that I only have the SEL55210 for this task, I'm very satisfied with the results. And even if the lens can track the object, the operator has to track it, too. That's not so easy if you zoom in completely. Due to the shutter speed, ISO went up pretty high. Fuji has better image quality and better lenses. I still love my NEX-5N, but I sold my NEX-6 and replaced it with the X-Pro1, which blows away Sony image quality. The build quality is always superior to these plastic Sonys.
I own the A6000. You can use it for about 45 minutes of video / video clips- then it overheats. The frustrating thing is the video is great- probably better than my $1200 - $1500 video cameras. I'm actually considering buying a 2nd body and using 1 until it overheats and then switching to the other, especially since the bodies are currently selling for about $650...
