This is part 2 of the restoration of a Sony C5 betamax. It is also applicable to the C7, T7 plus other similar Sony machines at the time that used the same deck.
The belts are changed in this video with detailed descriptions of changing most of the belts - I seemed to be missing some footage!
Part 3 coming soon which includes servicing the timer switches and replacing the troublesome servo capacitors. More on the later can be seen on Palsite - www.palsite.com/slc5tech.html - don't worry about the existing tants but just scroll down to see the main culprits. I have found that Sanyo caps are used in various locations but not always the same locations from one machine to another so if you see ANY Sanyo electrolytics (light blue) in the capstan and head drum servo sections (which is on the right side of the bottom board looking from the front), change them.
Hope you enjoyed this video. Would you prefer longer videos with more in-depth content or shorter highly edited videos? I prefer the longer ones as it may give someone with some technical knowledge a good chance to resurrect a machine that might otherwise end up in landfill...
please do like and subscribe - I have a lot more videos to come - just need to finish them!

The heads went In My C7, straight to bin It went. No chance of getting any replacements, for love or money. I really miss that machine. I have hundreds of Promo Music Videos (This was the format of choice, and still Is). Nice Repair.

Thanks for the comment - really do like these old Sony machines. Shame your C7 expired - guessing that was quite a while ago? New heads are showing up on eBay now although at silly prices sometimes and you do need an eccentricity gauge on the older Sony machines.

Great video. When should you replace the belt? Off course, if it's cracked or porous, but are there any other cases to remove it? Or did you try its function manually?

The belts were slack so needed to be replaced to keep the machine reliable. Generally I replace the belts regardless if they are more than a few years old. Really glad you enjoyed the video.

Following your video I attempted to update my C5 since I have old family videos from 80's. I replaced all the belts and eventually got it to load and unload tapes fairly quickly. However, after 15 mins of running it just stopped. Now I can only get the tape (tried several) to run for 10 secs to 1 min before the play is automatically switched off. There seems to be a tape tensioning mechanism that jiggles a lot during playing, but I see this is still on your video. Any ideas would be helpful.

That's sounding very much like you're lacking take-up torque - that arm is the tension sensor for the tape take up. If you fool the machine into thinking there's a cassette inserted so it loads (Press the metal tape-in switch down with the top loading mechanism down) and then hold the take-up sensor arm away from where the tape would run and press play, you should be able to test how much torque there is - my guess is they'll be very little. There is a separate idler (and belt) for playback so check that also - it's the one behind the take-up reel (The one between is for fast forward and rewind and the one to the back-right is for tape take-up during eject) so just check there to make sure everything is as it should be. You can also get it to load with the top-loading mechanism up and this may help to ensure everything is moving to where it should be when you press play. Let me know how you get on :-)

How to remove this black cap from the head drum? It's very dusty.

Hold the bottom of the head motor and then spin the black plastic fan off. They can be very tight sometimes but just keeping working it and it'll come free. I've never been beaten by one yet!

Sorry to bother you, but I don't have a repair shop near me that can fix my unit. I am attempting fix it myself. My Zenith vr 9500 won't eject the tape. Everything looks fine as far as gears, and nothing looks burned. Before I go around the net purchasing belts, can you tell me by watching a video if the belts are the problem? I will upload the video now. Please let me know. Thank you in advance.

C5 belts are difficult to find and I have to say I do make my kits up for my own use out of random belts for other machines. Occasionally decent kits do come up on eBay though. I have been dealing with an Australian seller who seems to be making up kits and they are very good quality - I will ask them if they have plans to make a belt/ idler kit for the C5 and let you know.

Starcomponents sell a great kit and I've just bought a couple for myself. The link is www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185033635526?hash=item2b14dd36c6:g:DMEAAOSwnK1hNIKr they have only one set left but if you miss out, keep an eye out as they do get more stock.

Sometimes I ask myself the same question! Just like classic cars, retro Hi-Fi, old houses or anything 'old', it's the joy of working on these machines and the pleasure we get from using them. One of the main reasons too is that boxes of cassettes are being rediscovered from house clearances and people need something good enough to play them back on and capture precious memories.

Because everything from that era is way better in quality than digital bullshit that they sell you as digital high teck gears : the picture, the sound, the feel. Have you ever listen to a reel to reel tape on a well calibrated machine ? Try that and then listen back to a CD or whatever MP3 high quality , you ears will start to bleed ! Same here, it's a betamax, not a VHS ;)
