Thanks for yet another great review. My choice Will be the Sigma 14-24mm f 2.8, but this Sony lense was My first idea for a wide angel zoom lense

Wow! Now I see the great performance of this G lens I can't imagine how could the 12-24 f2.8 GM compare to it! Having an eye watering price but it's the only existing one in all brands yet.

Nice review Chris, thanks. I have a Sigma on test now, I found in testing the Sigma on the Sony a7iii that it doesn't operate my Godox V860II-S flash via TTL correctly (I have to assume the same would be true of a Sony flash), the lens's focal length doesn't get read so zooming doesn't change the flash's motor. I am going to have to go for the Sony F/4 or F/2.8. That or give up on TTL flash but it useful in real estate work on occasions. The weight of the F/2.8 could make the lighter version my choice, to be honest, even the Sigma is a backache maker at my age after a while. Don't even mention my 200-600mm Sony! Lens reviews seem to forget to check third-party lens compatibility issues these days, it always used to be an important issue but by enlarge they have improved so much it gets forgotten.

Hey Chris, love your reviews! since you seem to be the only one to ever really test ulta-wide angle: Im not sure which ulta-wide to pick... I have the Tamron 17-28 f2.8 and wanted to get the Laowa 10-18 as an addition. However I'm not fond of the image quality of the Laowa and now I have tried the Sony 12-24 G and liked it quite a bit, it would however make the Tamron a bit obsolete and free up the money... Do you have a suggestion what you'd recommend? Tamron + Laowa has the upside of being a 2.8 with 67mm filter thread combined with 10mm from the Laowa, the Sony has the upside of being one lens with AF, but it is f4 and no filter... Would love your input!!

This is sort of a competitor of the Sigma 14-24 ART lens. (‘Competitor’ in the sense of I can imagine most photographers who have one of them wouldn’t own both). The Sigma has better image quality and seems to have a better build quality (just from various reviews), the Sony is much wider. But how much does one need the sub-14mm part of the range?

I wish the Nikon z mount went to 12 - I see 12 as the baseline for wide angle. Wider than I would use for landscape, but there a certain urban and architectural shots I would use 12mm for

Agreed! For landscape I mostly use my Tamron 17-35, because it's TINY and light, with really good image quality, but for architecture I like to use the IRIX 11mm. It's not the best, optically, but it's good enough and quite cheap, and I found it hard to justify a higher price for something I don't use all that often...

It depends on what kind of work you do with it? For video, the Sony is better. That's why I'm just about to order it... I already have the 24-105 F4 and this will be the perfect companion to it. For any more planned and precise work I have 3 Sony primes...

@@lukastemberger photo and video. I have 24-70 sigma dn art, 16-35 2.8 v2, canon with sigma ring, 70-200 2.8 canon with 2x converter (makes wonders in crop mode on my 7r3) tamron 28-200 ok for daily use and cheap gigs. Sony 50mm 1.8 is a great value. Sick sharp for a plastic lens.

Should you turn off lens correction if you shoot video with the 12-24mm F4 because one review show that the 2.8 version has weird curvature magnify effect if you change focus when the correction turn on? And it the F4 version still a good buy because the same 6 years old 16-35mm GM got updated months ago? This lens has good looking lens flare tho, newer coating might can't achieve it anymore easily

Fun fact: the old 10-18mm f/4 lens for APS-C ("Super35mm") actually looks quite good starting at 12mm on full-frame, despite being a crop lens. And that's from the good old days when The Sony Corporation weren't such cheap bastards and actually included O.S.S. in lenses, even (gasp!) wide ones.

Isn't the crop factor 1.5x? 🤔 Or do you mean you have to crop in 1.2x until you get rid of the vignette?

@@marco_prolo Just saying that if you put the lens on a full-frame camera, when you zoom into 12mm or farther, there's no crop problem.

i borrowed this one day from my job for a long exposure it was really nice tbh sharp contrast was good i didn’t notice anything major i loved it but i wouldn’t buy it

From 14 to 20mm the corners are very sharp, better than 12mm and much better than 24mm. The lens is ideal for travelling, when weight is not important the sigma has mare value for money

I really enjoy your reviews even though many of the lenses you test aren't in my price range. I worked a lot recently to save money for a sony 70 200 f4 g i would love to see a test of the lens on here. If you consifer doing one, please include a full body portrait at 200mm i would be so grateful🙏🏼 PS. Sorry for my bad english greetings from Germany

Do these types of lenses count as internal zoom (even tho the lens technically moves as it zooms in the front with no barrel extension)? Just wondering if these builds have a better chance of keeping dust out from the front area

Im considering to get this one for real estate photography. I fear the f/4.0 wont be enough to get bright photos in the seasons outside of summer.. but the 2.8 is way out of my budget.

For real estate you can just get a tripod. You want a deep depth of field anyways

If you need a super wide with stabilization, you can consider the Sony SEL1635Z. Great lens.

2:51 Why top right corner look totally different (lower resolution/contrast and higher exposure)? Chris, it looks like your test chart is not evenly illuminated. Chris, how do you choose the corner to evaluate (the best)?
