The v2.0 Firmware update for the Sony FX3 added some great new features to the camera including new menus, Cine EI and the ability to use LUTS. In this video I show ten more features that you might have missed so far!
IMPORTANT!!!
Please note that updating the Sony FX3 to Firmware version 2.0 wipes all of your settings! Make sure to write down all your settings before updating. Once installed make sure things like recording bitrates and AF settings are set as you require them.
Also some FX3 users are reporting Auto Focus problems with firmware v2.0. I haven't had any problems so I didn't want to mention it in the video. Keep an eye out on forums etc for the latest news regarding any issues and if I run in to any I'll be sure to update this info.

Great video!!!! Not sure it’s been mentioned but lut will bake in IF you are not using a log profile! Guess we can’t have it all 🤷🏽‍♂️

It doesn't actually, you have the option to embed the lut file itself but the effect of the LUT is not baked in to the recorded image.

Yes, it's a shame they didn't differentiate the FX3 more from the beginning though as I'm sure a lot of people may have chosen differently had they been aware.

You’re very welcome. Are you looking to sync the FX30 with another camera using matching time code or just use whatever tomecode is set in camera?

@@PaulJoy Yes Paolo I would like to synchronize the FX30 with the sony Z150 to be able to make the wedding video with two cameras so as to have all the ordered clips in post, but obviously first of all I have to make sure that the Time Code is recorded in the clips and not I can do the right setting, can you tell me the right steps? Thank you

Just a quick note, AF Assist can only be used with Sony lenses, it doesn't work with 3rd party lenses.

Hi Paul, great video's about the FX3. Thx a lot! Just updated the firmware. But now it seems as if the buttons 1 Iris and 3 ISO and the shutter(ring), when pushed, appear in lock mode but are not possible to get them out of this lock mode when pressing again, as before with the former firmware. (also the appear very very brief) First I thought I had it in auto flexible mode, but that wasn't the case. So the only option to change these three now is through the main menu/Main-1?? I cant imagine these three. buttons. dont. work anymore the way they did.

Hi! your video is an incredible help!!! I just have a problem my FX30 camera doesn't have the audio level display option, is it something that was removed in the new update? I can't visualize the audio levels of my camera as you have them in your video.

Thanks for letting me know. Make sure you're using the video mode, if you're in still mode or S&Q mode then you won't get audio levels.

Very informative video. I was wondering, though, how do you remap the fn button? It doesn't offer it in the normal button customization menu. Is there somewhere else?

Hi Paul, thanks for your tips, however, not sure whether you are aware that we are unable to record using any of the new features-Flexi ISO, quick Cine EI, or Cine Ei-using the atomos ninja V external recorder because the new firmware 2.0 has not yet been configured for external recording via HDMI. I am unable to record in 4K using the updated firmware for the Ninja V since Ninja v unable to receive the 4K signal over HDMI, such as Avid DNxHR LB, SQ, HQ, or HQX. As a result, we can only record in 1080p. could you please help me to clarify whether we can record 4K in Ninja v. while using cine ei options, Thanks

Hi there. Yes I talk about that in my Cine EI video... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4oQ1HS1im1E.html There are a couple of ways to get around this, the first is to shoot in ProRes RAW which works fine using the Log Shooting modes. Alternatively you'll need to switch off Log Shooting and just set one of the picture profiles to sLog-3 and work the way you did before the v2.0 firmware. There is a third way but it's still not ideal, if you switch of recording to the internal media then it will allow you to send 4K via HDMI. The trouble is it still doesn't work well with Cine EI because the HDMI signal adds the LUT if its switched on and it needs to be on for Cine EI to be useful!

Naturally, we may keep recording in Raw without switching to Cine ei by applying the picture profile approach. Thanks.

Great video, Paul. So I'm seeing some chatter in the FB FX 3 groups about this update impacting the autofocus in a negative way. Have you seen any issues like this?

Hi Gerald. No I haven't noticed AF problems so far. When I first installed it I thought my AF was acting weird but it turned out to be a specific setup where the subject was right at the limit of the close focus range of the lens causing it to pulse. I have written in the description for this video that there are some people reporting issues though and it's worth keeping an eye out.

The only thing that did catch me out was the change in bitrates for each frame-rate. I did a couple of shoots where every time I changed to 50p the camera was recording at 8bit 4:2:0! Thankfully they didn't need much grading and worked out fine but you really do need to go through everything after updating!

Not sure, maybe it only works with Sony lenses, I know there were some features that required native lenses.

Hi Paul. How do you find a new firmware performance? Have you noticed any problems with AF after the upgrade? Did you upgrade to 2.1 which was released recently?

Hi Pete. I’ve had no problems at all with V2.0. I’ve not installed V2.1 yet as that does seem to have some serious problems so waiting to hear more on that one. It doesn’t add anything that appeals to me so I’m not in rush for that one.

Really useful video! I’ve updated both of my FX3 cameras and the battery meter intermittently shows the percentage of what’s left power wise. Is anyone else having this issue?

@@PaulJoy I do have genuine batteries and some third party ones also. I have to double tap the screen in manual focus mode to see the battery metre.

On a side note, regarding time code. I connected a Deity TC1 using the Sony cable to the multiport and set the TC on the camera to free run as suggested in the documentation. Then I started the time code on the TC1 but I never get the EXT LINK and the time code doesn't change in the Sony FX3 .. feeling dissapointed, am I missing anything? If you have tried this and have any tips it would be greatly appreciated.

NVM. I figured out, the camera was at 24 pfs and the TC1 at 25, I changed it to 24 and then it recognized the link. Interesting, would be nice if the FX3 would recognize the link and give an error showing the different framerates. Hope this is helpful for anyone with the same issue. I thought the cable didn't work.

I know I'm a fool to think this, but I really wish that Sony didn't only focus on updating firmware for their best cameras. It is amazing how much they can add to these bodies post launch. The a6000 series however remains kind of painfully undercooked, imo, and unaddressed. Would love that flip screen option for my a6600

when you use touch focus on app I think it was spot focu, but is touch tracking also available on app?

What do you thk Paul? Lot of people was reported an important bug if you use NINJA V as external record , because you'll loose ProRes4k by HDMI . It should definitely output 4K in flex iso log mode as that is the replacement for PP7. It's a Fw2 bug, need to report that to Sony?.

I don’t think it’s a bug, my guess is that Sony either decided the camera doesn’t have enough processing power or just didn’t consider people using external recorders. Either way what they need to add is an option that allows the user to switch off HDMI lut output and then enables 4K output. The thing is it’s easy to do 4K external recording still by using a picture profile with slog however that not a very elegant solution and it should be possible to do in Log Shooting Mode as well. As I say in the video it does work fine with ProRes Raw which is a good solution as well.

Totally understand your frustration. It does make sense that the FX3 is more in line with the other cinema line cameras but a lot of people purchased the a7s3 as a video centric camera.
