Sony Playstation 4 PS4 Blinking Blue Light Of Death / Red Light Issue FIX 

You hero! I took my PS4 apart to clean the fan, only to find it, that when powered on, it enters safe mode. The fan got louder and louder until it came up with the red line. I didn't tighten one of the screws on the heat sink enough! Thanks so much!

My problem is the ps4 will turn on (and stay on) until unplugged also there is a blue light that slowly blinks and no image is shown on my tv. However the same hdmi cable from my ps4 works on other devices so could it be a power problem? But if it were a power problem wouldn't the ps4 immediately turn off? Please help I need to know if I have to get a new ps4.

jeez I've tried everything except the steps voiding the warranty and I cant get mine to work, I can't even get my console to boot into safe mode.

@jose camarena It can be either from your power supply or the board might need reflowing. Try also taking out all the cables (power, hdmi etc) then wait 2 min, plug in power first then power on wait till its on if it does turn on and then plug in hdmi. If not, then you probably need to have the board reflowed.

Yeah I left my ps4 on throughout the night, i was watching netflix and when i wake up its still on, but nothing on the screen and now it doesnt even go into safe mode. it just blinks blue, then white.

I had the blue light of death untill i updated the software and it started working wooo hooo Ps i did give it some smacks to power back on Smile more

It actually worked :) I put some washers underneath the processor tightening bracket, tightened them pretty well and my PS4 works again like a charm! Thanks for the valuable advice!

This is why I no longer buy consoles first batch releases, too many issues with hardware that can often only be fixed permanently with a new release. I remember the PS1 had to be turned upside down to play games due to a bad lens positioning or similar, and the first PS3's also had the blue flickering light. The Wii had a bad drive after wearing out (would click) and Sega Dreamcast would reset on it's own. If the PS4 had a lost guarantee that could have been $400 gone on day one (was over $600 in the UK..ouch). Gamecube, N64, SNES, Saturn.. no problems and still working 100 percent. Just watch in the near future as hundreds of thousands get angry over their Apple watch refusing to tell the time..

Blinking red. My ps4 just won't turn on. This happened once already. Before I turned off my system I put it in rest mode. The next time I try powering it on it won't turn on at all. No sound or beep or noise is made. I try turning it on with both my controllers and the power button. The first time to get it on I unplugged the power cable plugged it back in and they it turned on. But it warned me off I do this it could corrupt data and etc. So now I'm asking you what to do because the same thing is happening again but I want to see if there's and explanation and another option to due here. Seeing as its not really on there's no fan going on in the back. But there is a little heat on the system. When I turned it on last time when I unplugged and replugged the cord the fan was on. So it's not faulty. I'm not sure what the problem is but possible overheating even though it's not that warm.

I had a flashing blue light of death and no video. I attempted to boot into safe mode to no avail. I then disconnected the hard drive, started the device (let it boot for a few seconds), shut off the console, reconnected the hard drive and received working video with a system check on the drive, and rebooted with working video. Apparently in some cases this issue can be related to a fragmented drive and the process I described (you have to start it at least once without the HDD plugged in) temporarily corrects the drive. In some cases the issue will return as your drive is starting to fail and some times it will last longer.

Mine turns on the ps logo appears the disappears like it should but jus stays on a blank screen and don’t load and the light just keeps flashing blue

I found a great BGA rework jig for the PS4 motherboard on eBay today. Check it out: www.ebay.ca/itm/-/222203838393 I don't like universal jigs, they don't provide enough support to the boards and you can easily ruin a motherboard making it un-repairable. Just thought I'd share since I know some of you are stubborn and are going to tackle reflowing/reballing your dead ps4, don't do it with out this rework jig. Total must have.

If you're at the level that you try to fix this yourself and have to watch this video to get help, I bet you're already at the level where you have no warranty left to use. Bought mine from ebay, from a seller who had sold thousands of it and a good reputation, and he didn't respond about the problem. Ebay said they could pay my money back if I sent it back and transfer the money when they got a confirmation that he picked it up. But he didn't do that so after a really expensive shipment oversees (100 dollars+) I just got it in return with no money back. So frustrating. Now I just have a brick. I followed this guide, and removing the harddrive didn't do anything, and fiddling with the screws to the processor didn't do anything either, so I have to dissemble it. The problem is that my father's toolbox contains a lot of bigger screwdrivers only that can't do anything with the small screws. Hope I can find some smaller screwdrivers in the store tomorrow. Too bad it's sunday and I live in probably the only civilized western country where everything except the smallest convenience stores and gas stations are opened. And surveys is saying that the population wants to keep it like that. I don't get it. Which other countries have shopping malls and big stores closed one day in the week? It's insane!

I didn't have my PS4 2 weeks before it went. Sent it back to Sony, got it back last week, and it's now dead again. This machine is going back and I'm going to demand a refund. I'll buy the PS4 when the new version comes out and the (obvious) flaws are ironed out. No console has ever failed me twice in the same month before. That's the last straw.

I have just worked out it is my hard drive that has gone wrong. The link isn’t working, so should I download system software and put it in usb, put hard drive back in ps4 then download it on safe mode?

All right question this is 5 years later but my PlayStation had the red light of death while on a carpet floor my dad said it was because of the floor but I have some very high end games and my ps4 only over heats when I play those high end games for like 3-4 hours plz help

my console works okay for like an hour to max of like about 5 hours then the screen gets all static then the video and audio output goes out but the white led remains on like the console is still running normally then when i turn the console off and turn it back on i get the BLOD till after some minutes the console starts to repond ...... any would be appreciated

Hey pwrd, my PS4 started making weird noises. It always would show the PS Logo when being turned on, but it would not boot. It would say the PS4 could not start. Upon further inspection, I opened my PS4 and the noise was definitely coming from the HDD. Also, the noise would only commence when the HDD was inserted, and when I removed it, the sound halted. It was a constant clicking noise. I'm guessing the head was stuck or something. My system turns on and off perfectly, with no audio or graphical issues. So, do you think I should replace the HDD or send it in just to play it safe? Here is the thing: I don't have a warranty and it costs $150. I can buy a very good HDD for $60 on Amazon right now. I'm positive that the reason my PS4 wasn't working was because of the failed HDD. What should I do? Thanks.

Great advice ,but after 2hrs of no luck I have given up and sent mine back for refund. worked great for 48hrs then it shutdown. there is no way I would open my ps4 that would void the warranty. as far as I know this machine has been designed poorly...no wonder there are so many failed machines out there .being a pc gamer I am shocked bye how bad system air cooling is . the more processing power you have the better cooling you need because of the heat build up over time. . The ps4 might look next gen but it won't last long. most people laughed at size of xbox one,including myself.after the red ring of death on first xbox 360's.Funny how the table's have turned. i will not touch another PS4 until a new model or design comes out .This will end up being very costly to sony...

Hey sir, I have a PS4 and just the updated the Latest version Software Oct 2021 in my Console. On first it update all the stuff and it turns off after I thought it would restart but instead it stay remains as dead. After I gave my PS4 sometime and again try to start but i had a problem of BLOD. When I pressed the power button then the blue light stays for 2 to 3 seconds and it turns off as it is always. I tried to long press the Power button for Safe mode but again it is not going to safe mode itseems. I need your help. Please revert back.

Hey Pbk, im helping a friend to fix his ps4, the issue here is that the ps4 started to pulse a blue light, (BLOD) and now he can only start the ps4 in safemode and only play in 640 res. do you have anny ideas what it can be? if you need more info i can ask him. Hi, I bought a ps4 recently and it turns off inmediatly when i try to turn it on. Sometimes when i make preasure too hard the top of the the console it works fine but in periods. At that moments if if touch the console on the top of it or if i make little and soft touches it first freeze and then turns off. I live outside of the EE.UU and CANADA for the garantie. I have question. So my PlayStation has the blinking blue light where it does show video display. So I messed around with it and I finally got it to cut on. So I turned it off. And it went back to the blinking blue light. So I messed with it again. And come back normal. So now every time I im done playing ill put it in rest mode. My ps4 was hit by a power surge durning a thunderstorm, wouldn't come on, I ordered a refurbished power pack and now the power will come on for a few minutes and than cut off..I manage to get to safe mode but it always turns off before any one of them can complete. Can you give me any ideas or could the refurbish power pack be bad.

when taking the hard drive out the system turns on and gives the message about no hard drive, but how do i go as to re-installing the software? it will not go into safe mode. after putting it back in it will go into checking storage but will get stuck at 12% for hours, and will not go into safe mode

I have a problem with my ps4. I turn it on, the light appears then turns off. Sometimes if I'm lucky I powers on I get to play for like 2 mins then turns off again.

Would I have a red light issue, if I took it apart, and possibly got a couple wires switched around? Or the cable that looks like a ribbon, do the ends matter so long as they fit the same?

My ps4 switches on for a second or two then dies. Day one launch console, warranty ended months ago. Tried all sorts of fixes, safe mode, hard drive out, hdmi etc etc nothing worked until today. I got my hand palm down and pushed down moderately on the top of the ps4 console lying horizontal and then powered it up and to my amazement it worked, once the light turned white i then took my hand off and it stays on for the duration of my session, the only problem is once i turn it off or put it back in rest mode it happens all over again but adding the pressure on top gets it going, it sometimes take a few attempts but i have managed to get it going several times today. Does anyone on here know how i can go about fixing it permanently?. i tried looking at the power brick inside but it all looked perfectly fine. Its so frustrating it can't be nothing to serious if a bit of added pressure gets it going.

guys if you don't want this to happen to you clean your ps4. plus if you put the ps4 standing up it has a better ventilation system for the console, also do not put the ps4 to close to the wall either leave some space for it. :)

I just had this issue, nothing was working... not holding in any buttons... nothing..... but then out of frustration I repeatedly hit both the power and eject disk buttons simultaneously about 10 times and it entered sleep mode somehow and the light turned white.... I let it flash a few times white and powered it right back up

I had to loosen one a tiny bit then it started working, turned it on and off five times right now, just for that I'm subscribing :), screw the warranty lol I'm not waiting for Sony to fix it

This PS4 still blinks blue. cannot get it to go into safe mode, it just beeps once and then turns off after trying to get to safe mode. Will not beep 2 times to put into safe mode. the usb ports also do not have any power for some reason! I guess this PS4 is fried??

Hey I've had this problem most of the 2 years I've owned my PS4 and it seems to come and go, also my touch sensors on the front doesnt work either sometimes. I've got my console resting on its side and ived tightened the little screw for the disc tray which I got recommended on RU-vid and seemed to work for a bit but comes back after a day. My console gets really hot and loud only after 30mins of use but I don't get a red light bar warning of overheating but I turn it off anyway incase. My software seems to work fine and I've only experienced freezing once or twice. Has anyone had the exact same problem and know anyway of fixing it ?.

Hey man, here's my problem. My nephew came over yesterday with his PS3. Wanted to hook it up to the net and get updates and what not. I turned my PS4 off. Unplugged the HDMI from it, and plugged it into his PS3. He did his thing with the updates, we finished, and I plugged the HDMI back into my PS4..... black screen. Now you'll notice earlier that I mentioned "I turned my PS4 off"... I was playing it right before he got there. Working flawlessly.I don't understand why unplugging the HDMI and then plugging it back in had any effect on it, but it did. I've tried everything you mentioned in this video. Sony says that without the receipt (even though the console IS still under warranty, AND I have it registered through their website) that they can't help me without it.Gonna cost me some 200 dollars to get fixed, and that's simply not an option. The PS4 was a gift for xmas. I don't have the money for fixing it. If I can't fix this myself, I'm just out a PS4. Here's what I've tried, I changed HDMI cables (have like 4 others), tried plugging it into different HDMI ports on the TV, even tried using a different TV (actually an ASUS monitor for my PC). I've noticed that this is a big problem, apparently, with LG TV's, but mine is a Panasonic plasma. Then I found you video here, and tried all of this. I'm wondering if, while it's in this black screen, the controller is still operating it? If this IS the case, then someone could feasibly walk me through the safe mode menu, right? Please help.

Step number 7 was really helpfull; I made a complex massage to ps's heart (processor) through the plastic cover, even not taking it off. All other steps might be also quite usefull but my case was really tough(( After hard massage with some krack noise ps4 initiated SAFEMODE and i immediately chose point #7 full initialisation with HDD format. All now is ok. Best wishes to author, surfed hole day in russian internet - all useless. Thanks)

Hi, its been a few years since you had this video posted.But. I got my ps4 cleaned and it worked perfectly when I went back to get it. Later after a month of use. It started presenting this problem. My ps4 turns on perfectly and runs games and everything is perfect, no loud fan noise. I play for an hour, shut it off and the next day I want to use it, and the blue light would come up and after a second it would shut off. I have to unplug the power cable and give it a few minutes and then plug it back in and the ps4 would turn on normally. But SOMETIMES my controller would disconnect and wont connect again. Happens with my 2 controllers. The place where I got it cleaned gave me 30 day warranty for the job. But this happened after the warranty was up. What could it be? I saw this video and Im not that good at disassembling stuff, i just tried the removal of the HDD, and the pressing down on the ps4 case.
