Iirc, The original was a commercial/financial failure And off the top of my head, there’s no true portable gaming console out in the market like the vita was, so I’d assume there’s some tech or market barriers for a an actual portable form factor console that could run games at the same standard of performance as like a steam deck (Nintendo has them internationally familiar exclusives, so the switches poor performance isn’t worth comparing with)

You really think they would rush a new handheld when they dont need to? Im sure they will think very hard and take a long time designing if they were to make a new handheld. And the goal shouldbe running PS5 games in a lower resolution and performance with cloud save

One great thing about the WiiU was that it was fully backwards compatible with the Wii. It had a transfer function that moved all your Wii games, save data, etc to the WiiU, essentially replacing that console entirely. I wish all consoles had that function. Imagine having a PS4 menu within the PS5.

Like yeah the tablet was tethered to the console but playing Black Ops 2 with a friend while one played on the tablet and the other on the screen was such an awesome idea. I briefly had one and thought it was shit. The OG Wii was mostly shit but was worth it for Wii Sports alone which is one of the best pack in titles of all time. Nintendo seems to be stuck in boom/bust cycles because their console strategy is too dependent on finding the next gimmick. If the gimmick doesn't catch on, the console doesn't sell and there's no incentive for 3rd party devs to port their games to the weak hardware that remains.

I honestly loved the Wii U because as a kid I could play my games just using the gamepad, while my parents used the TV for things like the news etc. So I can see this as being really appealing to a younger audience in the same boat as I was. That said, I don't see young kids as the target audience here, and this will likely be a very expensive add-on, versus something that was included in the box.

We bought a Wii U after it floundered for the sole intent of playing exclusive Wii (which we never owned) and Wii U games, and selling it afterwards before the games were remade on Switch. The sad thing is, I much preferred the Wii U over the Switch. The controller concept was awesome, especially when playing games like Xenoblade Chronicles X, turning off the TV, and playing the game exclusively on the pad. Much like Luke's friends, I and everyone else I knew initially thought the Wii U was just a controller for the Wii. Only after looking it up, after it more or less failed, did I find out that it was a new system.
@ragnarockerbunny
@ragnarockerbunny Год назад
Personally I can't see how anyone would prefer the Wii-U to the switch unless it was for an exclusive game that has yet to be ported (like Twilight Princess/Wind Waker HD). Sure, you can't just turn off the TV with the switch but fetching it from the dock is a small price to pay for it actually being portable. Then again, perhaps I'm just not the target market. I jumped from PS3 to PC and bought a Switch as my handheld/portable gaming machine.
@DragonEdge10
@DragonEdge10 Год назад
@@ragnarockerbunny The portable experience of the Wii U is nicer than the Switch's on every count but range, and in the case of the OLED, screen quality. Wii U gamepad was just nice to hold, and because it's streaming the games you didn't have to sacrifice game quality between TV and pad. Granted, I personally don't think the switch is too far off, but there's an undeniable ergonomic win for the gamepad that the switch just doesn't have, even if you slap on those oversized "ergonomic" joycon alternatives.
@willwunsche6940
@willwunsche6940 Год назад
@@ragnarockerbunny Don't get me wrong the Switch is an amazing system I love but there's a lot the Wii U just does way better too. Wii U was way more pro consumer, backwards compatible, more comfortable, virtual console allowed you to own legacy games instead of paying subscriptions, the library of legacy games to buy was massive covering so many consoles, had to my understanding much higher quality hardware sensors/gyro, which led to half the input lag in some similar games like Splatoon (52ms Wii U vs 110ms Switch), included microphone, built in tv remote, better online (for free too), much more charming high effort software OS, experiences provided by dual-screen/monitor gaming were incredible, etc. There are still many things wrong with the Wii U, but it does some things incredible that nothing else can match. I just want my Nintendo Land party game sequel and them to integrate a few of the advantages of the Wii U for their next console Switch successor
@Disdaine82
@Disdaine82 Год назад
@@ragnarockerbunny We actually don't use our Switch off the dock; for us it's an over glorified console. I can definitely see the benefit for those that use it, but I've always felt the handheld mode came with too many compromises such as lower resolution and poor battery life (compared to DS/3DS). I think what I miss most about the Wii U was the better motion controls and vast library of games due to backwards compatibility. It was a great system to come into at the end because there was just so much unique content between the 2 generations. However, had I paid full price for the Wii U at launch and waited for games, I probably would not have had such a positive experience. The console was just poorly marketed and third party support nearly non-existent.

people tend to forget that playstation did this with the vita, for the PS3 and PS4 mind you!, it is such a shame Sony literally butchered any hope of selling that thing with how god awful their marketing was, worse than the wii u by a huge margin imo, most of my friends thought it was just a really expensive controller for the longest time. such a powerful little thing, especially for it's time, the fact it's not too far off the switch in performance despite being almost 6 years older and infinitely more compact, makes it such a missed opertunity imo, they even have a OLED screen, i used to use mine extensively, especially for emulation, only stopped using it as much once i got my steam deck.

But besides Playlink the smartphone party games Sony started tech demos but didn't ever do dual screens or certain stuff that much just kept remote play going from PSP, Vita to now.

Well, for the cellular data thing, in my country the internet speed in general at best is 1mb/s (literally everywhere you go, no joke) while all cellular data providers run at 5-10 times that speed on average so for reliable gaming, using cellular data is the way to go. And hell, I'm talking about hotspot cellular data from your phone, if you use cellular data through LAN it's even faster (though not by much, maybe one or two more mb/s). The nice thing is that you can have your normal internet for online games like MMOs and installing games and then use the cellular data for stuff like MOBAs, team shooters and fighting games, it's also nice that said games don't use that much data so it's more affordable.

And yeah I understand that in the americas it's really hard to build good mobile networks because of the mountains and stuff, but here in Finland? When I'm visiting my sisters, maybe like 50ms extra latency? It's noticeable, but I can definitely play even soulslike games with that. And the standard data plan in finland? Infinite usage. Sony has had "remote play" for years already at this point, for PS4 and PS5, and you can use any mobile, tablet, or pc/mac with their app to do it, and its easy enough to pair a PS4/5/xbox or any other third party controller to mobile or pc these days. What will be interesting to see at this point, considering they're making a dedicated device for remote play, is how they handle the previous restriction remote play had, at a developer level. Currently the remote play wont broadcast anything the game dev decided to block as a "recordable scene" (common for cut scenes) and you'd see nothing but a black screen in those instances. Will this mean that Sony create a work around or makes their devs stop doing this and patch older games that have it, or will it create a mess for marketing/PR when they get backlash around people complaining they cant actually play story driven games on remote because they literally don't know what's going on due to blocked cut scenes. I also hope Sony doesn't pull their current (freely offered) remote play functions in attempt to capitalize on the new market they're trying to create with this hardware.

@@Sarge92 Technically they aren't wrong, because if you're a consumer on the market for something you can play as a handheld and you're deciding between steam deck, switch, etc or project Q, then you're basically weighing up all the 'contenders' on the market and picking one that fits your use-case and probably your budget (and if you already have a PS5). Again, this seems like its open interpretation, because that literally doesn't sound to me like they're saying its the same as a steam deck... and the honest truth is, until Sony drop more information on project Q's capabilities, anyone who (in actual fact) is calling it another steam deck doesn't seem technical minded enough to listen to. Time to laugh and move on from these reporters.

Talking about cellular networks in switzerland. 5G coverage isn't perfect and country side areas are mostly missing it, but in cities and larger villages, there is a lot of coverage. Our ISPs charge roughly 20 USD / month for a fully unlimited 5G 2Gbit/s data plan. And from the regular speedtests I do whenever I feel like it, I can say that you can get up to 2Gbit/s with a latency as low as 2ms for up and download. And relatively consistent at that. In terms of speed, it is slower than what most ISPs allow through your FttH. But in terms of latency, you have a hard time reaching these speeds over your home internet. Considering this, a cellular network version of this PS5 tablet would be cool. But it likely won't be a feature.

For me, I absolutely love the idea of a wireless display-controller combo, the same way I still absolutely love my Wii U. That said I can do the same thing for free on my phone through Steam Link, so it'll be interesting to see how it's priced. My S22U is 1440p120hz AMOLED and I have an inexpensive attachment for a controller. So pretending I could buy it, the 1080p60hz seems kind of underwhelming but this thing is probably a lot more comfortable in bed too, so it comes down to the price. $200 is way too much, where $120-150 would be great assuming it's a quality product.

@@SunnyExMusic I mean it's depends on what you want and how you'll use it. If it's something insanely low latency like the Wii U gamepad where it's equal to a TV then it becomes like the PC tower versus gaming laptop argument. What do you care about most? Performance, comfort, quietness, or portability, and convenience? It's a subjective answer. If you're the kind of person that has a partner trying to sleep then you might prefer a lite, quite tablet, that doesn't make any heat or noice, versus something loud like a steam deck. But in a different senario it could easily be the opposite. We aren't talking about cloud gaming here from a server, it's a wireless HDMI display attached to a controller It depends on the price, the quality of the product, and if you have a meaningful niche use for it in your lifestyle But there are potential advantages to that over a portable console like battery life, comfort, weight, noise (don't get me wrong I love portables though)
