One of the most underrated metal bands ever. Good choice of track though, the arpeggios at the end are just nuts. In fact, that entire album had some absolute corkers on it.
@Hybbeman
@Hybbeman Год назад
Jeff Loomis, what an absolute madman. It's one thing to run those arpeggios up and down in your bedroom and get them down well enough to feel proud of yourself, but it's a completely different thing to nail them perfectly night after night on stage. I'm not even into neoclassical stuff but Jeff Loomis is definitely one of my biggest guitar heroes.

Oh absolutely - Sentient 6 is an masterpiece in lyric writing. To listen to an AI telling you about its swing from wonderment, through remorse, then to anger at its creators is something to wonder at (and maybe fear?). One of my all time favourite tracks still 15+ years after being released.

Nevermore were one of the most gifted metal bands... it was tragic that they fell apart just as they were getting recognition and sales. They had the technical shredding of Jeff Loomis (guitar) and the inimitable voice & lyrics of Warrel Dane (vocals) that made Nevermore a cross between a death metal band and a technical thrash metal band. Warrel Dane was the vocalist of Seattle metalliers Sanctuary in the 80's... they released 2 albums (1 produced by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth) before they split in the early 90's... Jeff Loomis was 16 when he auditioned for Megadeth in the 80's, and he joined Sanctuary as a touring member before they split. Despite the 90's being hostile to heavy metal... Dane, Loomis and Sanctuary bassist Jim Sheppard formed Nevermore w/ Van Williams (drums) soon joining and released their debut album in 1995... Pat O' Brien (guitar) joined them briefly before he joined Cannibal Corpse in 1998. A string of stellar albums by Nevermore followed - 'Dreaming Neon black' (1999)... 'Dead heart in a dead world' (2000)... 'Enemies of reality' (2003)... With increasing record sales, Nevermore struck hard in 2005 w/ 'This godless endeavor'... Steve Smyth (guitar) joined briefly... then Chris Broderick (guitar) who is this video, toured w/ them before joining Megadeth in 2009. 'The Obsidian conspiracy' (2010) would be Nevermore's last record. Despite increasing popularity and tours lined up into 2011... Jeff Loomis abruptly quit, citing alcoholism being a factor of the band's breakup... Van Williams also followed him out. Jeff Loomis joined Arch Enemy in 2014, and worked on solo ventures as well... Warrel Dane and Jim Sheppard reformed Sanctuary... releasing a 3rd album 'The year the Sun died' (2014)... Warrel Dane was working on a new Sanctuary album and a solo record, when he unexpectedly died in late 2017... Sanctuary did a tour w/ a fill-in vocalist in 2018.

"The inception of songwriting" - what a nice way to describe some advanced metal songwriting. Yeah, I guess most people underestimate the amount of work it takes to evolve the serious instrumental skills shown in some metal styles, and therefore are also surprised, that this goes along with new or unusual ways to write music, IF you incorporate less common scales and harmonies to not get bored when practicing. Metal really pushes things forward, with experimentation in scales, microtonal music, influences of jazz, free jazz, classical music, up to fusions with pop, reggae, polka or whatever you can think of. And for sure with rhythmic patterns and unusual song structures. IMHO the craziest stuff is mostly prevalent in the extreme metal genres, esp. death metal and mixed styles with death metal influence. Nevermore is/was for sure an example of very interesting songwriting with fantastic musical skills, that still manages to gain a lot of popularity without sacrificing anything in terms of complexity. And yes, the guitar part, that brings you to the idea of classical influences, goes on like forever in complex progressions, and that's for sure a hell of a moment for a musician on stage. I mean, imagine the moment right before that... ("Yeah, you can do it, you will not fuck it up....") 🙂Although not my favorite style of metal, Nevermore is for sure impressive and entertaining to see at the same time!
@SoulSingerDiscovers
@SoulSingerDiscovers Год назад
Yeah they are a fascinating band. The songwriting broke so many typical rules I would expect and I think doing that with lyrics AND harmony is really hard. Especially I suppose if like a lot of metal fans, your fans have a bit more of a developed ear for these things. I good watch. Thank you again for your take Martin. Always a pleasure 😊❤️

Aw man! Not only Melisa (for the heart); is Nevermore an awesome rabbit-hole to explore . . . but my fave _Prog Metal_ band; *Fates Warning* who are considered the Fathers of the genre with *Queensrÿche* have a great catalogue of music. But FW have experimented with their sound throughout the years, have 13 albums, and 2 unique era's of 2 vocalists (along with their sister band *Arch/Matheos* with the original vocalist). Not many reactors delve into the deeper history of Fates and they deserve MUCH more attention and accolades.

jeff lumis is also recognized as one of the most talenteted guitarists on earth with people like Yngve Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, John Petrutti, Alexi Leigho, Stevie Rey Vaughn, etc. These are people within the last 40-50 years on a list of playing ability that went above and beyond the playing ability of the rest of human civilization and most of them were from the prog metal movement. other bands to check out would be bands like Lacuna Coil, Killswitch Engage, Kamelot, In Flames, Epica, Blind Guardian, Amorphis, Sonata Arctica, Iced Earth, And you have to check out musicians like Dio, for something a little more humorous, Steel Panther, and Gwar. The main thing is that most of these bands had their early carreer playing with each other all over the planet, including Wacken open air festival in Germany that has had crowds of over 80,000 people that traveled from all over the world. I think that the performance by Blind Guardian playing The Bard Song where you could litteraly hear the entire crowd singing in unison was incredible.

@@cegentry I have gotten a few people into them over the years, and have a few close friends that listen to them. They are still my favorite Prog Metal band because they were never afraid to change. I HOPE they have a new album in the works (or *Arch/Matheos* too), because its sad that 2 albums and tours got canceled because of the pandemic. Will be nice to see them again. At-least Ray Alder has the band *A-Z* with Mark Zonder on drums! Maybe we need a new *OSI* album too? - Sorry for your loss as well. I also had a friend I got into all sorts of Progressive Rock & Prog Metal who I lost a few years ago. He was a funny, kind dude, I miss him a great deal. As well-as my ex-girlfriends Brother who was a HUGE fan of those genres (and influenced his sisters taste in music), who was a distant friend for many of us who listened to a Progressive Rock/Metal Internet Station. . . . . Both VERY missed in the world.

Is interesting to have a vocalist analyse mainly Warren Dane and this song because well, for obvious reasons this is a song famous for *guitar players* to nerd about the insane Jeff Loomis solo and even though most people at least comment on the actual song structure there's rarely any focus on Dade: he was super unique as as you've seen metal singers usually only go for either growling or the highest tenor they can manage but never low notes for some reason.
@SoulSingerDiscovers
@SoulSingerDiscovers Год назад
I sort of love that. I think there’s a lot of different guitarists on RU-vid, with plenty of analysis given to solos, and different styles of guitar playing, but I really does enjoy the songwriting here, and even though I know that there’s plenty of songwriting analysis on RU-vid, it was so lovely to listen to him and talk about it 😊

The lyrics are about losing faith. Feeling disconnected from society, which changed from believe to consumtion (theocide (the black - everything unexplained)), the protagonist seeks for redemption. Maybe the person found god (again) after he died. Cool detail: The third stone is earth, which seems like a godless endeavor for the person. There are many more cool lyrics. The band discovered some philosophical theorys e.G. Kant (Noumenon and Nihilism). Edgar Allen Poe is not only the namegiver of the band, but also mentioned in the second album name policits of escatsy (P.O.E). My favorite album is the concept album "dreaming neon black", where it's all about the stages of grief.

I was surprised when you said that Warrel's singing is (just) what you would expect from a metal band. He actually has kind of a unique voice. Unlike most metal singers, he was trained in operatic singing for some years. And while he doesn't actually sing opera style in Nevermore, his approach and sound is imo different because of this background. Warrel Dane and Jeff Loomis (lead guitarist) are the two defining members of the band. You can replace any of the other guys (and most of them have been), but if you replace one of those two, it is no longer Nevermore. Sadly, at some point they went on indefinite hiatus and when Warrel Dane passed away at only 54, that was the end of it. He left behind an unfinished solo album. They released what they had so far and it's great stuff but only half of what it was meant to become.

There was truly no one like Warrel, at least definitely not in metal anyway. I never got to see them live because it took me many MANY years to get into them properly, and once I did they had already split 🙁 The whole band are just insanely talented. If you want to hear one in 4/4 with a riff that messes with your head, I strongly recommend checking out "I Voyager", it's such a simple riff to play, but the order at which the notes are played took me a stupid amount of time to learn because there's not really an even pattern to them 🤣

Great analysis! I can’t agree more about harmony/melody and needing variety in general in songwriting. I’m by no means the world’s greatest songwriter or musician but something I don’t think a lot of bands understand is you need variation. Your songs can’t all be in E or D or A and in 4/4 because that’s what’s easy to do on guitar or drums. Even if you’re great, your audience will tire of you quickly, even if they don’t even understand why other than “it all sounds the same.” Changing from song to song the key, tempo, time signature, dynamics, etc and doing some of that within songs is what makes things feel “different” for the audience and keeps them wanting more. I wish more musicians understood this. Sadly I’ve preached this and had it fall on deaf ears in band situations. Super disappointing bringing an idea to the table only to be told “that’s cool! Can we transpose it to E?” Oh, and guess which band/album is a perfect showcase of this and a masterclass in songwriting? Not a second of filler on this album. It’s still perhaps my favorite album ever even 20 years later.

I became a Nevermore fan pretty late, like in the early 2000s. I had heard Sanctuary as a kid but didn’t realize they reformed as Nevermore. That was the pre-internet days so it was hard to know stuff like that. I bought one Nevermore album and I was so blown away I went and ordered every album. They quickly became my favorite band and Warrel Dane became my favorite singer. His range and style was amazing. I was devastated when he passed away especially because he was in the middle of recording his second solo album. Thankfully the album was able to be completed.
