The EXB-MOSS is an option board for the Korg Triton and the KARMA synthesizers / workstation, containing a MOSS (Multi-Oscillator Synthesis System) physical modeling tone generator from the KORG Z1 and the Prophecy. In this video you get information about the MOSS board, and an extensive sound demo.

Love the warm, calming orange glow of the Karma's display, which I find easy to work on for extended periods. I think more workstations should have warm toned displays instead of the harsher high saturation green and especially blues!

The fact is, the core value of Z1 is the TMS57070 DSP chip customized by TI (Japan), each chip provides 2 voices (Z1=12voices by 6 DSP chips; Z1-EX=18 voices by 9 chips, very expensive). This DSP chip only licensed and made by TI Japan corp and stopped production in 2000, never ship to other countries. That's why only few Z1 were produced and no longer seen after 2000 (Actual production time-slot only less than 3 years), the only rest parts have possibly been built as MOSS-board for Trition Expansion but not a lot. Z1 sounds are unique due to hardware's difference comparing to later Korg gear and competitors. It's truely a lost tribe never seen any more. Rest in peace !!!

Thank you for creating and sharing this video. The MOSS-board is an excellent addition for the Korg Karma! Recently I noticed a lot of (built-in) sequencers also use probability to create moving melodies, rhythms and even swirling pads. So imagine my surprise this is also possible with the Korg Karma. The manual states this, but I haven't seen anyone show this. Maybe you can demonstrate this feature in a future video. Have a great week!

Wonderful video! Thank you very much for the demo. :-) This Korg Karma sounds like an excellent instrument for creating moving sound textures like the music from Forrest Fang.

Prices have started to drop for these cards, as fewer of these old synths are working as each year goes by, but the boards keep on going and get ripped out. Just picked one up on eBay for £120.🙂Way less than the £200+ they were only 18 months ago in the peak of the pandemic. 🙂 This was a pretty rare synth in the USA, the same reason prices are sky high on most non-USA built synths and cards over there.

Trying to find out if the full Karma functions and sounds ended up in the Kronos. I had a Kronos 2 88. Never appreciated what I had at the time. With Korg ditching Karma in Nautilus, I find myself seeking something that had Karma, if not the Karma work station itself! :)

How is that? Do specifically Korg's products suffer from this, or is it more of a general observation? I have an EX-8000 and an ESQm, both pushing 40 years, that are in pretty good nick.

Nice!! What I'd really love to see in a tutorial.. is from zero. How to install the Exb Moss exp and set ready for the use. Likewise, from the installing and seting up the exb samples expansion.. so we can do the exact procedure and to enjoy at will!!! Txs for sharing! TC.

@@woabeatz9717 Actually, you're wrong. The Korg EXB-MOSS expansion board is installed underneath in the compartment labelled EXB-MOSS. If you go to Korg's Support website and look in the discontinued/legacy items you can find the information on page 267 of the Karma/Parameter Guide: www.korg.com/us/support/download/manual/1/123/1627/ I know because I have a Korg Karma and had to install it. It is like installing a card in a PCIE slot in your computer because it is about that size. PCM-EXB cards are basically the size of a stick of RAM. I have two of them too: PCM-03 and PCM-04. Those went in the top left compartment's two slots.

I Have a MOSS expansion board in my TRITON EX 88 I really should explore it more...lol...some strange sounds can be had...

Nah, they're not. They ASK those kind of insane prices, but if you watch them, they never sell. Lovely to watch greed fail. Fact is in Europe and the UK you can pick these up for under 200 euros/GBP regularly, though you'll still see the deluded optimistically thinking some fool will buy theirs at $700 !!! Errrr, no.😀😀

So I had a question for you. Did you push the data files over a MIDI connector/device or use a 3.5" floppy to do it? And if a MIDI device, how did you do it? And anybody that will talk about one of my favorite synths gets a subscribe from me too! All those sounds were flashbacks!

The internals are a bit awkward to work on, but I'd recommend installing a usb floppy emulator. Karma uses regular IDE connectors, you don't necessarily have to buy one that's specifically listed as compatible. I didn't even have to manually format my usb stick, the Karma did it as soon as I tried to access it. If ypu've got a model with buttons for accessing several images, that works too.

You could do it, but something a bit more FM based would probably be cheaper and easier to find, as well as easier to design sounds on. Something like the Elektron Digitone is a better purchase for those sorts of sounds, much better build quality too and you can buy it with a warranty.

@@2112jonr I agree with maybe going with something cheaper and easier to find, but MOSS does come with a rather comprehensive FM engine in the form of Korg's VPM. 4OP, several different waveforms for both carriers and modulators and integration with any of the other oscillators in 2OP mode. The main downside is limited polyphony.
