Loved this video. Had steam in my blood since I was 4. That's why I am so stubborn and never give up I suppose just like steam

The steepest gradients on South African railways were 1 in 20

They were just doing it for the photographers. Only the GF went further on to New Hanover so the GMAM was going to be taken off at Albert Falls anyway.

No. The SAR did tests between Mallet locomotives and Garratts and the Garratts won the tests in every category. I know that Big Boys are not a Mallet but close enough in design. I think UP would have been better off using Garratts.

Jim Jardine put your thinking cap on squire. These Garratts are a response to lightly laid track, tight radius turns for a country with a small population and therefore a small economy which means less traffic ie freight and pax. There is a saying in engineering and it is - Form Follows Function. US = big economy, big traffic, big freight so on and so forth. This is why you see Challengers, Big Boys and 8500hp turbines. Also the cost of bridges and track to take the high weight of these big locos is high but so too are the profits so they spend the money. There's that Form Follows Function thing again.
