I live around the corner from this place and walk through it several times a week. A beautiful green space, especially the old cemetery, and always gives chance for reflection. Huge amount of Manchester's anthropological history here for future generations to learn from.
My brother is buried on the other side across the road. Lesley Ann Downey & Edward Evans The moors murders victims are buried at this cemetery. I always pay my respects when i visit my brother 😔🥀
I loved this, that cemetery is so gothic and ornate - amazing! If you’re ever in my neck of the woods in Norwich you should come to The Rosary Cemetery - it was the first non denominational cemetery and has some very cool graves. Very Victorian.
Fantastic Video. So many well-known personalities are buried in Southern Cemetery. Its the largest municipal cemetery in the Uk and the second in Europe. John Ryland's an interesting man. He owned the largest textile concern in the Uk. As well as being Manchester's first Multi-Millionaire. Although not born in Manchester he made a mark. So much history in Manchester to cover. I'm sure you will have a large list of places to vlog. Thanks for your Vlogs :)
Hi mark thanks for watching. Yes I've lots I've decided to spend the next month focusing on more graves as that's what really interests me being the people that are in them I've got a brill place in rotherham I want to focus on soon xx
@@SarahsUKGraveyard that's good I look forward to watching it. Did I see you mention Rochdale cemetery, if you need any help finding graves in there I live just round the corner from it.
Half of my family are in that place or the Manchester Crematorium next door. My great Grandparents are in the 'old' section and grandparents in the 'new' Nell Lane extension. A very peaceful place, and I could sit in there for hours, the birds chirping, the squirrels running around. I have been around the famous graves and most annoyingly L.S. Lowry who I spent hours looking for and it's only behind the North Chapel and you can see it from the driveway! The sadist part is the 'paupers' or public graves just as you enter from the Nell Lane (Halfway up). Also the Crematorium has seen a famous person or two. My nana (who sadly is interned here) once has a child was bet a 'Shilling'she'd not walk through the place at night as a teen (remember at that time, the cemetery was in an isolated area 1930's.. She did it, and earned a 'shilling' has she said 'it's not the dead that can hurt you' after all!
@@rayphillips6060 yes I have been there but not with the channel. I used to work in that area and one day visited the graveyard abd found it unexpectedly. I should revisit xxx
@@SarahsUKGraveyard people are trying to find the grave of Damian Davey/Damian Gerrard Baker, he's the guy that sang time warp all everyone knows is he's laid to rest in droylesden.
Hard to to soak up all that information Sarah you were on fire in this one. Had to keep rewinding and pausing to read your on screen remarks about the people you were talking about whilst listening to you at the same time. John Ryland created the Ryland library in Manchester to gift the local people the right to read books which apparently were astronomically expensive. You should get down there sometime if you haven't been, you'll be gobsmacked by it, the place is amazing. And bloody hell them statues on the graves came to life when you were filming them, spooky. Loved it. 👏👏👏👏
@@SarahsUKGraveyard ps the way you filmed the trees with an upshot and the soundtrack you added were mesmerising, made me think of a spirit rising from the grave on it's journey to heaven. Next stop Hollywood. 😁
2:41 and 3 month after me 😁...I'm guessing you were one of the eldest in your year at school Sarah. 6:23 No way..."Mr. Manchester"....He discovered Shaun Ryder aka "The Happy Mondays"....~ "Yer twistin' ma melon man!"....
@@SarahsUKGraveyard if you stand with your back to Wilson’s grave she’s about 5 metres to the right in the other section,Edward Evans is in the new part of the cemetery across Nell Lane,Yorkshire Ripper victims Vera Millward old section and Jean Jordan new section. Jordan is buried less than 200 yards from where she was murdered
I drove through it Friday and was eyeing it up. I'd say summer. But I'm taking my car to be fixed in milrow the next few weeks so may do one when I pick it up xx
