For the first time in a long time England enter a major tournament as the favourites. It is also the tournament that is set to define the legacy of Gareth Southgate and his tenure with England.
Under his guidance he has created the most harmonious England squad in decades and nurtured a fresh bond between fans and the players. He’s led them to the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final in the last three major tournaments - which previously had not been achieved for over 30 years. Now with arguably the best England squad since the Golden Generation, can Southgate go one step further and lead England to the promised land?
Simon and Graeme are joined by former England international Joleon Lescott to discuss England’s chances at Euro 2024, how Gareth can achieve success and what this would mean for his legacy. They also talk about the attacking talent at Southgate’s disposal as well as the issues in defence whilst looking at the teams who could potentially cause England a problem.

I think france will, the rest wont want to play england unless its in the final when all tams believe they can win, germany and spain dont have no where near as much quality in their tean. Kane, saka, foden, belingham, rice, waker and stones are all top 4-5 in the world in thwir position. Spain dont have that and neither do germany, they have maybe 1 or 2 but not 6-7.

We were on the same level as them or arguably better and we bottled a 1-0 lead to the Croatian's because just as we did against Italy and France when he had the game under control we sat back because of Southgate's tactics and handed the opposition the initiative.

Hang on a minute. The problem with England is not the players...it's the manager, how he sets them up, how they play and how he makes changes during a game. To date, he has had relatively favourable draws in every tournament and comes up short against top teams with top managers where he was found wanting. If Southgate has learned from his own mistakes and his own failings, become more insightful and learned to take the initiative, England has a good chance to win Euro 24. Unfortunately Southgate hasn't demonstrated to have the necessary qualities to lead England to winning trophies during his time in the role. I'm not sure why after 8 years anything will be different this time around. The likelihood will be more of the same.

It's also the players. I'm English/Italian. I read in the English press, these podcasts etc. everyone says we have the best squad and are 'the' favourites. We just aren't. France have the best squad, Portugal can easily match our squad in terms of key positions. It's yet more stupidity from our press and it's this stupidity other countries label as arrogance. France matches us in every department except maybe midfield. And their midfield is very strong anyway. They've got a better keeper, far stronger defence, the best player in the world, and I'm sorry, Griezmann is as good a player as Bellingham at this point. Same with Portugal: Dias, Cancelo, Bernardo, Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo, Leao. England's defence is weak compared to the other favourites.

2:05 Souness ...actually born in 1953, Hungary were one of the best sides in the world in the 50's, they are literally the origin of total football (Michels loved the 50's Hungary team and based his AJa teams off their tactics, and Cruyff, based his total football off Michels Ajax teams)

And Hungary based it off River Plates "la maquina" in the 1940s that won everything. Di Stefano was part of that River team. Total football may be the big thing in Europe because of Pep and Cruyff but its origins lay on the Rio Plata river in South America.

Nobody's arguing England doesn't have a strong team or can't win it all, but between England, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal there's not much difference in terms of worldclass players and offensive skill and anything can happen any given day. How can England be favourites when we don't have a full 11? Portugal have two players for every position, we don't have a left back. You're going up against some of the best in the world, not having the option of balance in the sqaud is crazy. I hope England negate this by playing attacking football, but knowing Southgate, I think we eek out of the group and get beaten by the first decent team we face.

Yep, just as most reasonable people thought. Players with abilty, and no game plan and no cohesion as a team. This is what happens when you have no actual manger. We will put a couple past Slovenia (3-1), and either draw or narrowly beat Denmark to go through. Then we will play Austria, scrape through that and then we will play a good team and go out. For contrast, in 2016, little old Wales beat Belgium's golden generation, 3-1. Southgate is a fraud

@@TORRES999ify you can have zero errors and still be a mediocre or poor goalie when it comes to actual shot stopping. Pickford has performed better in the last two seasons for Everton, but he is 30 years of age now. His average save success isn't even 70% and he's had six seasons at levels from the Championship to what is now the Vanarama (Conference) League. In more seasons than not, he's underperformed even relative to the expected number of goals he'd face playing for a weaker/leakier side. A good goalie for Everton is someone like Nigel Martyn who, at the age of 37, was still pulling off great seasons and helping Everton get top four. And I'm not a Geordie... One error is too many when you're supposedly a goalkeeper who's "good with the ball at his feet" as if that's more important than being an actual goalkeeper, especially when it achieves nothing apart from pointless, risky possession in the defensive third. Oh yeah... he's also in awful form for England following the Euro qualifiers. Bazunu was the worst Premier League goalie in history last season after Kepa with 54.2% from 32 apps. Pickford averaged *42.9%* playing against Italy, Ukraine, Malta and North Macedonia, and he didn't make a single save until his sixth game.

Its about balance of a team not just piling in alot of attacking players. We played 4-3-3 against france in world cup, attacked them and was the better team. They took their chances . Foden hasnt shown his man city form for England yet. People will blame southgate but in the past gerrard lampard rooney etc were never the same in tournaments for England

er... our defence? Apart from Kyle Walker we're seriously lacking in this department. John Stones is injury prone - and is he really an elite defender? looks great in a Man City side stepping into midfield at will with Rodri as the lynch pin, and top class defenders Ake, Akanje, Gvardiol, Dias etc on hand. Luke Shaw is top quality, but is also injury prone and there is no like for like cover. Everyone else is seriously inexperienced at Champions League and international tournament level which doesn't bode well - Iceland proved its a major concern as they cut through us with ease at times and could and should have scored more.

Our technical ball playing defenders are made of glass and are injury prone. Our more robust defenders are donkeys and will be a liability. Dunk is our new Maguire. Team needed white & Branthwaite along with a fit & inform Luke shaw to have the defence with the depth & ability to win this tournament. It’s going to rely heavily on our attacking players this time round to have a hope at winning a trophy. If our high press isn’t working and we can’t break those low block teams, we could get done on the counter. Groups aren’t going to be as easy as we think!

Southgate is a politician, a mediator, an FA PR man. Which is why England will be going home again. Gareth is a nice guy and genuinely wants to do well for the country but what we need is a leader of men, tactical shrewdness, an innovator and most importantly a motivator. Imagine what Klopp could do with these boys.

This idea that teams would not be confident playing England is nonesense. Its very english to think teams only want to play weakest possible opposition (reflects at club level aswell). Sorry to say, but thats not the case for most nations that are used to winning things. And even based on squads, France are World Cup finalists. Italians are current Euro holders. Both beat England in their last tournament encounter aswell, so neither of them would lack confidence. Portugal has equal or better squad talent, so they'll be confident going into it aswell. Germany, Netherlands & Spain, although not at their all-time best, have all definitely improved a lot from last few tournaments. So if England can have belief to overcome France, so would they against England. In my opinion, France are definite favorites. England & Portugal are main contenders. Germany, Netherlands & Spain are strong potential winners. None of those teams will (or should) lack confidence playing each other.

The Scotland head coach should've called up Ryan Hardie even has a back up end off. As for England for us to be favourites i've never known the build up to be so flat, But saying that high expectations always nine times outta ten leads to disappointment. We will see how it goes.

Its absurd for Lescott to say Southgate deserves credit for getting the best out of Foden and Bellingham. Even if Southgate could replicate 70% of the club form of the players, they would already win something by now

England need to start taking games TO the tough opposition in the knockouts and the group stage but against the better teams or the teams on our level such as the Netherlands we need to go at them and pin them in and enforce our game on them!
