Always found it sad that there were never any Sovereign Class ships included in the battles on DS9, alongside the ships introduced in First Contact, and a few more Defiant classes. Would have been nice to see the Enterprise drop in during the final battle, fighting along the Defiant, with even just Picard's voice being heard giving a brief hello. Would have also been nice to have the Enterprise be one of the ships on the final scene of Voyager, to greet the crew on their return, in order to complete the cycle started in TNG.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L Год назад
Sadly the producers didn’t trust audiences not to get confused about whether it was the Enterprise… they only allowed other Galaxy-classes to appear on DS9 after TNG ended for similar reasons. But that didn’t apply going the other way - Defiants show up in Voyager and there’s an Intrepid in DS9. They only cared about the “flagship” series (no irony intended, but that is how they’re called!)

I think it works out better to not see Sovereigns in the big fights. The Sovereign is Starfleet's expensive, rapid response ship. They would be zipping around preventing incursions and rescuing attacked outposts, it wouldn't make sense to throw them into the meat grinder that was the frontline during most of the Dominion War. That being said, I do wish we had hear about a Sovereign routing an attempted attack or two, even in passing.

Sounds like an interesting writing challenge. I could totally see the Federation basically not noticing Chakotay's Maquis cell for a year longer than the original timeline. Instead of Tuvok being the chose double agent, you could have Lt. Hawk going undercover; they're the same rank, and it'd give a chance to make Hawk more of...well, more of a character than he was in First Contact, lol. Imagine how hard Chakotay and crew would brick it when they realize they're face-to-face with the god damned ENTERPRISE. Plus, it'd be neat to see the Enterprise crew handle the Delta Quadrant weirdness. Maybe even have Voyager be the one that takes on what all happens in First Contact.

Most Starfleet capital ships, Galaxy, Nebula, Sovereign, Odyssey, etc. are big enough to easily accommodate 10,000 or vastly more people. The problem comes in whether or not the life support systems can accommodate that many people breathing, generating body heat, and so on. Such an issue may not even be one of available power. But simply how fast can the ship cycle used air, and assimilate excess heat, which can be used as, if limited, source of power itself. This would require actual material hardware upgrades. But for the most part, if the ship has the wherewithal to have at least minimal life support throughout the entire ship, it should be able to handle life support for 10,000+ officers and crew quite readily and easily.

If you haven't read them, take a look at EE "Doc' Smith's Lensmen books. Their science is...questionable at this point (they were written starting in 1948) but their FTL system is based on a gadget that makes their ships inertialess, so the limit on your speed is based solely on applied thrust compared to the resistance of the medium you're moving through - no fiddly relativity or lightspeed limitations involved, and cruising speeds are in light years per day. The more streamlined a ship is the faster it can be, so most ships evolve from spheres to cigars to teardrops over time, and the density of interstellar hydrogen is a real limit on strategic speeds. The galactic cores are a slow zone compared to the spiral arms, the space between them is even faster, and most ships making long trips find it faster to climb/dive out of the galactic plane, fly to just above/below their destination, and drop/climb back in. Intergalactic travel is found to be much faster than initially predicted thanks to the scarcity of matter out there. The "inertialess" thing also means that the moment you turn your thrusters off you come to an immediate halt the moment you bump into your first "inert" molecule of hydrogen, and until later in the series ships have to kill their Bergenholms to actually fight because the pressure of the photons from their beam weapons will just push a "free" (inertialess) ship harmlessly away from the attack at near-lightspeed. Like I said, the science is ludicrous in retrospect, but he's at least fairly consistent about how it works and it does make for some rocking space opera battles.

There's also the question of how many Defiants you can afford to build and crew compared to a single Sovereign. Crew casualties and ship losses among Defiants are likely to be much higher than a among Sovereigns, but those little gunboats can be many places at once while the multirole super-cruiser (fast as it is) would struggle to cover multiple hotspots. Sovereign is a masterpiece of design keeping true to starfleet but also you KNEW it was a capable warship if needed, thing went through opponents like a hot knife through butter and I wish it had more onscreen appearances Sleek, sexy, like a designer car but at the same time deadly efficient and ruthless like any good battle cruiser should be.

1 Defiant vs 1 Sovereign would go to the Sovereign. 1v1 it just has the size and energy output advantage. Consider how well the USS Lakota held up against the Defiant. And that thing as a retrofitted excelsior, not a full Sovereign hull. However, once you equalize for material costs, it turns into 1 Sovereign vs ~6 Defiants. Which would definitely go to the Defiant swarm.
@rufinator
@rufinator Год назад
In fairness to the Defiant, they were pulling there punches against the Lakota as they didn’t want to kill fellow starfleet officers. They fought for a while before Sisko gave Worf the go ahead to outright disable them.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L Год назад
Yep! The Defiants pack similar power with less resilience, but denser, so there’d be a bunch more Defiants for the same materials and crew. By crew it’s more like 10-20 Defiants, but the material cost of the big warp core to feed those weapons (and all the relays it blows out all the time) definitely eats-into that advantage outside of times they’re at war.
@rubaiyat300
@rubaiyat300 Год назад
@@rufinator In fairness to the Lakota so was she. It was the order to stop pulling punches that had her captain (with a remarkable likeness to one Leah Brahms) stand down. The Defiant is great and had a great crew, but it was a hero ship in a war show. If the TNG crew was still on the air they would have been taking on just the same in their "weak" Galaxy class, let alone Sovereign. Defiants as a ship class aren't taking out dozens of Jem H'adar fighters each like the USS Defiant did. They aren't magically better at combat than other ships. An upgraded Excelsior should be able to hold their own against a single Defiant, it's just that much larger. The Defiant's advantage is the smaller crew needs and resources needed to build them to field more ships overall while being so upgunned it can hang with larger ships in straight combat. Though they really needed to have a couple eps hang on the fact a mission failed or someone died because it couldn't have the sensors/science labs to really do the main job of Starfleet. Same problem Voyager handwaved in an even more dire situation.
@richmcgee434
@richmcgee434 Год назад
@@kaitlyn__L The hidden costs of crewing your ships is pretty important, and often overlooked. Those Defiants have tiny and relatively specialized crews compared to a Sovereign, but their smaller size and (tough as they are) greater vulnerability is going to lead to more casualties and outright ship losses. When a Sovereign does go down in flames the loss will be staggering, but as a multirole ship they should see less combat than the focused Defiant designs, and therefore a bit less risk - not that exploration is exactly safe in this universe.
@christopherg2347
@christopherg2347 Год назад
@@richmcgee434 So less Sovereigns die, because the Defiants do all the real fighting? So they are kinda like the Security officers on a Fleet Scale.

It would be interesting to add a mission pod that could be integrated as the 'neck' in the ship after doing a saucer separation. It would give it an interesting profile and would be a very practical location for such a pod. It would certainly look better than sticking an Akira style pod between the nacelles like STO did.

I really like these sleeker designs that are becoming common post voyager and ds9. They’re so much better than the round saucer and long neck profiles, they also make more sense from an engineering viewpoint.
