Though most of the more well-known fighting in the Spanish Civil War took place on land or in the air, the conflict was in fact the largest naval war in European waters in the 20th century with the exception of the two world wars. This episode discusses the state of the Spanish Navy in 1936, on the eve of the military revolt that toppled the Second Republic. The fleet had been largely wiped out in the Spanish-American War of 1898, but by the early 30s had rebuilt into a relatively modern force, though small by great power standards.
My major sources are three articles by by Willard C. Frank, Jr, found in different issues of the Naval War College Review. These are:
“Naval Operations in the Spanish Civil War 1936-39” Volume 37, no.1 "Misperception and Incidents at Sea: The Deutschland and Leipzig crises, 1937” from number 2 of volume 43, no. 2
“Multinational Naval Cooperation in the Spanish Civil War, 1936” volume 47, no.2.
For information about the technical aspects and history of the ships involved, I use the excellent online resource, Navypedia.

Good video, but I should point at least two slight corrections: 1) During the 1934 Asturias Revolution no autogyros operated from Dédalo, albeit one Navy rotorcraft acted in observation and liaison duties in cooperation with the Army, but always land based. Even the ferry flight from Los Alcázares (south East of Spain) to Asturias (North of Spain) was done by the autogyro own means. 2) The second one is related to the 5 in (127 mm) calibre aboard heavy cruisers and destroyers, which was not in use by Spanish Navy then, but 4.7 in (120 mm) instead, a very British one. The 5 in would arrive when Spain imported US material from 1953 onwards and became an standard till today (F-100 frigates) and beyond (future F-110 frigates).

@@MarkSeven Cant wait for it.. And if you one day produce a vidoe about the german paratrooper operations in crete 1941, that would be very interesting, considering the style how you build up and develop the subjects you work on...

Really impressed with your content and looking forward (as a grandchild of Spanish republican exiles) to hearing the rest of the series :-)

Cool! I love naval actions between 3rd world powers, and in civil wars.
