When the Spanish general's attempted to overthrow the Second Republic in July 1936, the Spanish fleet was split by the uprising just like the rest of the country. Circumstance and class conflict among the naval personnel determined the allegiance of the Navy's men, ships and bases, and set the scene for the struggle at sea to come between the two factions. As chaos spread throughout the land, the fleets of the Atlantic naval powers sped to the scene in response to the calls of their nationals for evacuation. Their presence in Spanish waters throughout the war would add another dimension to the naval war, one that threatened the peace of Europe as a whole.
My major sources are three articles by by Willard C. Frank, Jr, found in different issues of the Naval War College Review. These are:
“Naval Operations in the Spanish Civil War 1936-39” Volume 37, no.1 "Misperception and Incidents at Sea: The Deutschland and Leipzig crises, 1937” from number 2 of volume 43, no. 2
“Multinational Naval Cooperation in the Spanish Civil War, 1936” volume 47, no.2.

the officers and captains wanting to join the fascist coup just to get killed or imprisoned by their own crews is too hilarious to me

You call one side the "rebels" as like the US Confederacy troops. Technically correct but in every other history program I have watched they are referred to as the Nationalists. Just saying, maybe showing some bias here and you say "rebels" dozens of times, lol. Maybe Nationalist is too hard to pronounce dozens of times.
