The video will show you how to reseal spark plug tubes to prevent motor oil from soaking the ignition wires. If enough oil leaks into the tubes, you may encounter ignition misfire problems and potentially damage your coil packs. For this engine (Toyota's I4 5SFE used in the early model Camry, Celica, RAV4, Solara and MR2), you'll need a 30mm 1/2" Socket and open end wrench to remove the tubes. Recommend replacing the valve cover gasket to complete the job.

I have a 3sfe engine in my RAV4. It's nearly identical to the 5sfe on the top end including the valve cover. I torqued mine to 31 lbs and that stopped my new valve cover gasket from leaking finally. I'm pretty sure that's the torque specified in my service manual.

Cant thank you enough for posting this video. I bought a $400 camry with a really bad misfire and found the plug wire stuck around the spark plug and was arching on the inside of plug tube. Made my job so much easier to get it off being able to grab it with some needle nose.

I actually used an instructional thread from you on Google on how to drain and replace the power steering fluid on a 4th generation Camry I like how you show the pictures and steps on how to perform the procedure, I actually actually already performed that procedure on 2 different 1998 Toyota camrys, the first one unfortunately I got in a accident and the car was totally ruined but I bought me another last year and performed the same procedure to perfection.

Thanks for posting this video. I had a mechanic chane my valve cover gasket couple of years ago. He didn't mention one of my spark plugs leaking plus recently oil leaks showed up behind valve cover. I just changed valve cover gasket and noticed cylinder 4 plug tube is leaking badly. I followed your technique and it worked nicely. It took me awhile to clean up old gaskets mess but I think it was worth it. Now I have to wait for 24 hours for Permatex optimum grey gasket parts to cure itself. Thanks again.

Hey great ... congratulations! I've seen repair shops try to fix oil leaks with RTV if they can't get their hands on a new valve cover gasket. Doesn't work and only a temporary fix. They won't order the part and tell you to come back later ... they want to make their money NOW, unfortunately. If while doing the gasket repair they noticed the spark plug tube leak, they either don't know how to fix it or want to bother fixing it.
@afara2000
@afara2000 5 лет назад
@@hardlymovingpro In my case that mechanic used new valve cover but he used RTV gasket maker more than those 8 spots mentioned in service manual. Not sure why but I am eager to see how my work will last since spark plug leak is fixed as well.
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 5 лет назад
Maybe he used a cheap-o gasket before that leaked and he wants to make sure that you won't be a customer "come back" with leak complaints. Use high quality name brand gaskets like Fel-Pro.
@afara2000
@afara2000 5 лет назад
Absolutely agree. I used Japanese made Ishino-Stone gasket kit which also came with 4 grommets, PCV valve grommet and even semi-circular inserts that I didn't use. It is lot cheaper than dealer's price similar to Aisin timing belt that cost lot less than dealer and still a high quality kit. My old PCV grommet broke apart inside valve cover and this kit saved me a trip to part store.
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 5 лет назад
We're on the same page brother! People think the dealer part(s) is the absolute best not knowing that the manufacturer (Toyota) subcontracts to the smaller companies in the supply chain to package and provide the part for the manufacturer with the manufacturer's logo.

Great video. Beautiful explanation. Here is my crazy idea. No need to remove the valve cover, if you are not planning a big repair. Use internal pipe wrenches to unscrew the spark plug tubes. Available at Lowes, Homedepot and other stores. No need to clean the tread on the head. Leave it as is. Wipe off the oil from the spark plug tubes and apply teflon tape. And here is an improved crazy idea. No need to buy internal pipe wrenches. The inside diameter of the spark plug tubes is 23.5 mm. I just have an old rusty BMX that I took apart yesterday. The steering bar post engages with the inside surface of the front fork central pipe (ID=22 mm) with cast iron nut under 45 degrees, that practically works as internal pipe wrench. The split nut has a range from 22 mm to 28 mm. I will try it tomorrow, but I am pretty sure it will work. The bottom thread of the spark plug tubes is very fine, and has to be handled gently. Tighten the long bolt of the steering bar post little by little to avoid deformation of the tubes. The good news, it is covered with oil all the time, and it will come out easily. If I screw up something will post again tomorrow.

Hardly Moving Productions so I did the job two days ago and the car is running great again. I added a bit too much of the gasket sealer paste onto the threads and had to spend a little extra time cleaning the excess after reinstalling them. I wish they made something to remove those tubes with though lol my back was killing me. Two of the spark plug tubes we're flooded with oil, so I went ahead and just applied the gasket sealer to all four tubes. I don't want to have to do this again.

adventureoflinkmk2 yea it’s a 30mm socket, I would also recommend using a shallow 30mm socket over a deep one if you’re doing this exact job, it’ll make the torque off the tubes so much easier.

Thanks for showing good technique. That technique is also used to remove studs. In most cars, there are no threads on the spark-plug tubes. There is a tool for that job called spark-plug tube remover, but it cost some fortune. I am thinking about a part on a bicycle called "stem" (holds handlebar and fork together) can do the job or not, since it is about the same size.
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 5 лет назад
Yes ... This technique can be used on studs as well; however, the top nut must be held tight while the bottom nut is turned. Otherwise both nuts might turn together depending on the amount of applied torque.

Before removing the tube, replace your gaskets or cover gaskets with the full kit, then oh while the cover is off brake clean inside the tube let it sit there for a bit the wrap a towel around it and spray some shop air in there get it nice and dried out probably replace the boot which typically you can do with most coil packs, because the oil in that boot is saturated you're never going to get it out of there. You would never really have to unscrew the spark plugs from the Block because that's not where the leaks coming from.

Hey I was changing my spark plugs on my 2000 Toyota Camry 2.2 and the metal connection piece on the boot came out of the boot and a got stuck on the spark plug. Long story short, I got some ceramic in the cyclinder and tried everything to get it out, it was very small crushed up pieces. But ever since then I have been getting low oil pressure at idle when hot, do you think that could have been caused by the ceramics from the spark plug. I changed the the timing belt, water pump all the seals, thanks to your videos, and I also changed the oil pump and cleaned out the oil pickup tube. I also did the valve cover gasket and spark plug tubes as you have shown. Im asking you because I can’t figure out why I’m having low oil pressure at idle, I put a gauge and it doesn’t register at idle, it is correct at 2000 rpm and I also change the oil pressure sender and checked the wire for it, it looks good. You seem to know a lot about this vehicle and I appreciate your videos on them, I love my 2000 Camry and know it can last a long time. I hope it’s not engine wear or something, let me know what you think, thanks!

Add 20% Marvel Mystery oil with an oil change. This may eliminate oil sludge buildup which may be impeding oil flow. If the oil turns black in under 500 miles, you probably have a oil sludge probem. Also check your catalytic converter to see if it's clogged.

Hardly Moving Productions I did a cyclinder compression test and turns out cyclinder number 3 (the one the ceramics went in) is low I got 220 on cylinder 1,2 and 4 but only 160 on 3, then did the wet test on it and pressure did not go up, spark plug probably scored the cyclinder walls.

Oil gets into those tubes from above from bad gaskets. If you're having troubles unstring the tube and the block, it's because it's in there good and tight and there's no oil leak in there from the bottom come kind of impossible really unless it came loose and if that was the case you just hand loose in it.

The trick is to torque down the nuts evenly. So start, for example from the center most nuts, torque to 5 lbs ... then 10 lbs, and 17 on the final. If the spread of torque is not even, there will be leaks.

Do you think the previous oil leaking and repaired ignition coil issues had anything to do with it?
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 4 года назад
@@LK-zi3ye I do not think so considering the age and probably the high mileage of the vehicle. When the O2 sensor malfunctions, the car's PCM (power train control module) will over enrich the air/fuel mixture to prevent the car from running too lean. The engine will run cooler than normal hence the P0125 MIL code. Replace the O2 sensor. If you don't, your fuel economy will drop and the catalytic converter will run hotter and burn out.
