This should be a standard item in Tesla Service Centers and Mobile Rangers. Tesla could, of course, make their own from recycled modules salvaged from old S and X battery packs.

I've own a tesla for 2 years and have traveled across the US. I find it impossible to fuck up the charge. I've never made the stupid mistake of running out of gas with my ice car. The same would go for my EV. The car tells you if you need to recharge. This tech is for forgetful people.

I think this is a really good idea for the near future, and by near, I mean for the next 20-25 years while most towing trucks run on gas and aren't able to charge EVs. And for those who say, "oh, but by that time EVs will have 10000 miles of range, they will never get stranded anywhere" to that I say: gas cars have really good range, and people let them die all the time in the middle of the road. Some jobs only exist because people are stupid and forget things :P

I thought the same then the cost ($6,732 per 18 months rent) made me rethink. I am a Nissan Leaf owner as well, I thought this could have worked but it seems crazy to spend so much on renting a temporary battery. It does cost less to add a second battery with few KWh as back up on the boot of the car. However, I wish this company all the best at least the thought about a solution for EV owners with low range.

The use case for apartment dwellers would be if you don’t have 240V available but do have 120V in a garage unit. The Sparkcharge unit(s) can be Charging or charged at any time and waiting to be used at your discretion for a rapid boost. I was on a Camping trip out West in the Bighorn mtns Wyoming a couple weeks ago. Our favorite campground does not have electric hook ups and no fast charging infrastructure within 80 miles. I really wanted to take my Model 3 P- but instead drove our Volt due to to the remote areas we wanted to visit on Day trips away from the camp site. It was also annoying hearing the various generators running every evening at the campground. I have a 2000 Watt generator that’s about the same package size the the SparkCharge single module unit. I hate having to use it because of the noise and stink of the exhaust.

For those offering holiday accommodation, particularly in rural locations, I could see property owners booking one of these for a given period of time, be that a day, week(end), month or for the prime holiday seasons. No more fiddly awkward extension cords threaded through windows and plugged into the dryer outlet. Cost of hire would then be passed onto the client as part of the property rental fee.

Some questions I would have would be in regard to how do you charge up the portable batteries? Regular 110v outlet? How long does that take? So if you're on a road trip, and you're low in battery on your car, you can charge up with this battery...but it's still not enough to get you to a supercharger. Could you go to a rest stop and use a 110v to charge up this Sparkcharge much faster than connecting the 110v to your car, and then charge the car with the Sparkcharge at a faster rate? Or charge the car with 110v while you're also charging the Sparkcharge battery on a different 110v outlet. Hmmm...

You rent one of these as a 'just in case' backup to take on your trip with you. Then at the end of your trip you return it. - Call it the 'road trip kit' include a single power pack, a spare tire, an emergency kit with those pop-up cones, first aid kit, tire sealant, tire pump... It might take up 1/4th or 1/3rd of your trunk, but you'll travel with confidence.

I’d take either solution.

the issue with keeping this in your car is the weight of the batteries will cut into your range so the idea of keeping the stuff in your car for backup might not be the best idea BUT the fact that this is a real product means every tow truck NEEDS to buy this NOW is a very real thing.... Also I can see the ever growing list of car repair people who COME TO YOU to fix your ICE car might also wasn't to expand their business offerings. In fact car detailers that come to you might consider adding this to THEIR list of services... Anything to set yourself apart is a really good thing to do when you are running your own business. In this way instead of a regular diesel towtruck brining you 15miles of charge, you can have the tow truck to be an EV with a large battery, that can charge you up directly by plugging into the truck, similar to the V2Grid idea.

Would have enjoyed more technical information. How do you recharge it, for example. Are the packs 400+ volts? Or is there a boost converter, and if so what’s the efficiency? You need about 95-100 18650’s in series to output 400v DC. That’s would be the most efficient, but anyway.

Another use case would be to allow charging from homes with solar that don't have nearby parking. Could you have a charging port in the boot and leave this plugged in as a range extender?

16-24 km of range from that? I can really see that helping to add extra range to get to the nearest charging station. Imagine if the roadside assistance services offered as part of some car insurance plans (IIRC) could provide that…
