Just a quick review and driving video of Spartan lunchbox lockers in my Jeep Cherokee XJ (front and rear). Overall I would say they are still daily driveable in the rain front and rear, but if you had hesitations, get a rear only.

you mean to tell us, they don't kick in at 70 mph on a straight interstate road and send you immediately across 4 lanes of oncoming traffic without warning like everybody on youtube says ? Amazing! :)
@NONAME-kw3pu

manual trans short wheelbase jeeps will change lanes , per article i read in petersons 4 wheel drive/4 wheeler . very disconcerting to the uninitiated
@sharpridgehomestead
@sharpridgehomestead Год назад
@@NONAME-kw3pu in over 20 years (closer to 30 years) of using various brands of lockers, I've never had that happen. Also, to shoot you into another lane implies 1 wheel has to turn faster than the other(s). What can happen is that in a very hard all the way to the stop of the steering wheel left or right turn, it can scoot like a 4wd does when in 4wd ... i.e., when making hard turns like when turning into a parking space in a parking lot at low speeds because then 1 wheel is turning faster than the other due to different turning radius's. Hope that clarifies.

I have a 4x4 g30 van I converted into a camper. Spartan locker in the rear and a torsen in the front. It's like a mountain goat.
@MrGoMario
@MrGoMario 3 года назад
Yeah, that's the absolutely best combination ever. The rear will help you even on rocky surfaces while the Torsen up front will let you steer. In mud and especially sand you are king. And if your Torsen is spring loaded with around 5kg (50 Newton) , no one will get places you go. Over the last 37 years I have tried most lockers and LSD's. Front and rear. And this combination got me the best results, in sand and mud, all over Southern Africa. Only on solid rock I got better results with Full locker rear and Spartan front! But 9 out of 10 times was the sand and mud which got me bogged down!

Hi BBuilder. I drive my jeep daily. my front is D30 open diff. I wanted to swap it with the locker (Aussie or Spartan) but after your first video (Spartan Lockers On The Road) I am worried to put it on. Don't you think it just got worn , therefore more quiet? Sorry for these questions, I am gathering the data and info about front lockers before installing one .
@BackyardBuilder513

Do you need to let out the gas to turn or does it basically act like an open differential while turning? Does it vary with how much power you give it
@BackyardBuilder513
@BackyardBuilder513 Год назад
Yes, you should let off the gas when turning if possible to make them unlock smoother/quieter. It is not required though. If accelerating through a turn, you will hear your tires chirping since the locker locks under power.

Hey man. Has the violent popping while turning from the last video gone away? Mine pops like crazy. It shakes the whole jeep and axle just like yours in the previous video.. it looks like yours is mostly gone now?? Is there a break in period for these? Thanks
@BackyardBuilder513

Yes most of my popping went away after a couple months. They ended up being fairly quiet unless I was taking very sharp turns slowly in places like drive thrus or pulling into parking spots
@NONAME-kw3pu
@NONAME-kw3pu Год назад
coast thru turns, the diff will ratchet, not lock up... that is where the pops and bangs come from, going around turns under power locks the diff... somewhat and it has to fight to unlock when going around turns under power.

Do you think that now that they're breaking in and getting quieter, do you think it would ease up on eating the tires too or not at all for the front?
@BackyardBuilder513
@BackyardBuilder513 4 года назад
They will always eat the tires up more than stock, simply because every now and then they'll give some resistance that stock spider gears won't do. But the longer they're in the better they get. Just keep up with tire rotations and you'll be fine

Could you provide some info, please? First: what speed / road or weather conditions you can safely engage your 4H driving on the paved roads? Second: what speed / road or weather conditions you can safely drive with engaged 4H on paved roads? Asking these ?s because jeep is my daily driven car, and most amount of the mileage done on highways. Front is D30, rear is D44 diffs. Rear I do not plan to swap.
@BackyardBuilder513
@BackyardBuilder513 3 года назад
With the jeep you can engage 4hi up to 65 mph I believe, check your owner's manual for the exact number. I would only use 4x4 on paved roads if they become unpaved; for example, snow covered. Depending on where you live, you should almost never need 4x4 on pavement as long as you have good tires and drive properly for the conditions

I learned how to drive woth a S10 4.3 with the factory G80. When yall say "be careful" are yall just referring to the oversteer from both rear tires spinning? Because thats fun, we can all agree right?
@BackyardBuilder513
@BackyardBuilder513 Год назад
I've had a couple S10s with the g80 as well - see my cheap 4x4 series 1! But the one you have to be careful with is the front locker if you're not familiar with driving on them. The front locking up in low traction on road conditions can cause funky steering response or understeer momentarily. This causes some people to lose control when they quickly gain traction again

in the rain the tires give in turns even locked so it is going to be an ez ride . it is drive pavement UNDER POWER that the LOCKERS LOCK or have a hard time differentiating/releasing the faster turning tire on the outside of turn. problems are when used in SHORT WHEELBASE Vehicles JEEP JEEPs and MANUAL transmission, per 4 Wheeler Magazine editor Rick Pewee (pay way)... the short wheelbase jeep jeep and manual trans will change lanes when shifting gears, very disconcerting to the uninitiated. so... dont let ppl drive it that are NOT GEARHEADs and can understand ... IT WILL CHANGE LANES ON YOU WHEN U SHIFT GEARS!!!!! get a feel for it before driving on highways... where MB 3's are uncomfortable to begin with over 45 mph with 5.88" gears.

Found out that Torkmasters now makes a Aussie locker for my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport .. it's a Dana 35 IFS .. Have a Detroit TrueTrak in the rear. The person I talked to at Torkmasters said that the front locker will only operate when I am in 4x4 otherwise it is inert in 2wd. Hope that's right. No matter if it's a bit noisy I'll live with it to have a locker in the front.

This only confirms, my never to be humble opinion, that lunch box lockers do NOT belong on the street, in particular on vehicles in which you can't unlock front hubs. Not in the rear either. I also believe that they will cause stress and premature wear on tires, U joints and steering components. You said yourself that you have to change your driving habits and need to be more careful. You also said that the lockers make less noise now. Doesn't that indicate that something has changed, like wear? While I like the simplicity of them for off road use, I would not have them on the road. There are other options, albeit more expensive, that don't have any of the bad characteristics of these.
