Seriously!!!!!! That part gave me SO much joy because while I’m not a mega gamer, I watched a lot of let’s plays of Max Payne 3 and never had anyone to gush to about how much I loved it. I should really buy it and play it now!
I really appreciate that Jakey was comfortable talking about the feedback regarding ROMCOM and specifically the Fantano video that came out in response to it. I remember when that album released. I listened to it alone on a great pair of headphones late at night. It wasn't perfect, it wasn't safe- but goddamn was it personal and meaningful. There are moments in those tracks that really hit, and make you feel something. It was a real shame to see Fantano just kinda throw it up in such a uncharitable and casual context and then just diss the whole thing in front of an audience. That format doesn't play to ROMCOM's strengths. It's not a safe POP album of common-denominator versus, and it's not some inscrutable cutting-edge high-brow work either. I always wondered how Jakey felt about that, glad we got to hear some of his thoughts here. Making art is so hard.
YESSS I can’t believe it took me two months to listen to this podcast I’ve been wanting to hear jakeys feelings on that since I first watched fantanos reaction
I’m roughly 100 hours into tears of the kingdom, probably like 2/3 of the way through the story (I think?) and I can in fact confirm that the kingdom does in fact have my tears
I was 50 hours into it and then I got my suspicions about a specific part of the story get confirmed and now I can’t force myself to play more story because I hate the decision so much, which is heartbreaking because I’ve been waiting for this mf game for years and I love it outside of that story decision
@@froggy5748 I felt the exact same way about that decision at first, and it took me a bit to keep going. All I will say is that if you keep playing your feelings towards that decision should change
I am so glad Jakey brought up the Fantano stream clip; I’ve been thinking about it since it came out. Such a weirdly cruel moment. Like, dumping on Drake and Eminem is one thing, but it just overwhelmingly felt like punching down to be so dismissive of Romcom.
Romcom is an amazing album! Coming from someone who initially didn't expect much and thought it might be hyped because of cult of personality. It isn't!
Kojima left Konami on bad terms for a lot of reasons. Konami didn't want to keep rolling dice with funding Kojima's games since they were very expensive and he kept going over release dates. There's also some corporate fuckery where they were trying to screw him out of creative control of his projects and stuff as well. I remember watching a video about the making of PT that talks about what went on and about how Kojima used PT to release his frustrations with his relationship with Konami. I don't remember who it was by, but it was really well done and does a great job of pulling apart the end of the Konami/Kojima saga. Konami did him dirty in the end though. Him not being able to accept the award for MGS 5 at the VGA's was brutal and taking his name off the game just to spite him was a low blow. I'm not sure how the MGS 3 remake will turn out, but it's pretty conflicting as a massive fan of the franchise as to whether it's going to be worth or not. PS: I'd kill for a Jakey Death Stranding video!
@@frogsbongs I actually got the collection for Switch! Solid rerelease of the HD collection games and Metal Gear Solid 1 Directors Cut being part of the package is awesome. I have 1-5 physical too but breaking out the PS3 and PS2 is a bitch and I like the fun digital bonuses that come with the HD collection games. Need to bring back the Metal Gear Database from 4 for the next release!
Also not to let my inner Zelda fan come out too much, but I think a good part of the issues with BoTW's writing and voice acting issues come down to a poorly done localization. I know it's an overdone subject to point to in video game discussions, but when you look at the actual transations of the original Japanese, there's so much more depth and meaning in the lines and the characters. They really did so many moments dirty. Down to things like the final memory - in Japanese Zelda is begging Link not to die. So that look he gives her right before he collapses is just so much more heartbreaking. And the vocal delivery too - things like Japanese Zelda actually having her voice muffled when her hands are covering her face, or her scream when she broke down being genuinely wrenching. Or the fact that in the Japanese version the quests are written in first person, because they're Link's diary; he interjects with personal thoughts and feelings. So much was changed or lost in translation and it kind of breaks my heart a little as someone who absolutely adores the game. You can see it right away in totk too: "secret stone" sounds so so ridiculous in English. In Japanese it does literally mean secret/mystery stone, but the word used is unusual and has a fantasy element to it, so it sounds very cool. Its like they heard us asking for a more literal translation and did it for the one thing that they definitely shouldn't have translated word for word. Translation and localization are very hard to do and they get a lot of flack from the gaming community, but when done well, like with the Phoenix Wright games, they can make games shine. But with BoTW it actively took away from what is an otherwise incredible game.
I haven't finished TOTK yet but I almost feel like it should've been _sacred_ stone instead. The word doesn't have the same meaning but it sounds so silly when the voice actors say "ah yes...his secret stone." Also the voice acting in BOTW definitely improved in the DLC but some of the choices in the original were questionable. It's the clearest with zelda, it sounds like her VA is struggling to maintain her accent so there's a lack of emotion in her voice when there should be more
And while we're talking about weird/bad Zelda localization: the name "Linkle." I love the idea of a female version of Link, but I'm baffled that not one person on the localization team pointed out, "Hey, this name sounds kind of silly in English."
@@GamingintheAM0801 it's too close to Tinkle haha "Link" is already pretty gender neutral, I'd expect either a "Linke" or "Linka" to sound more feminine
I love Jarvis’s hoodie. It’s so unique and cool! I’m glad he‘s branching out more with his style, I hope to do that someday lol :,) Edit: OH he mentioned it LOL I might have to check that brand out!!
wow the conversation about like people criticizing your content or jarvis mentioning not watching reactions hits home SO HARD. i’ve been in a bunch of cut vids (yes i won the button yes it doesn’t matter) and watching hasan or ludwig or critikal or even cody ko reacting to the vids i’m in is a top 3 most anxiety inducing activity. like it’s pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things but man it is such a personally intimidating feeling.
I named one of my special horses in breath of the wild Jakey, in honor of the man himself. He’s now my go to ride in tears of the Kingdom thank you Jakey for the name.
jordan is so right. pine barrens is genuinely such an emotionally important song and i will never get tired of it. when the album version dropped i genuinely lost my shit.
Right at the beginning, the thing you're describing as "scope creep" for content creators sounds a lot like what Ze Frank called "brain crack" back in his vlogging days. Sometimes an idea just keeps building and building until no attempt at making it real could possibly do it justice.
hearing Jakey talk in a less edited and more candid (as well as longer form) way is the best thing ever and i desperately want more of it. I still need to listen to the episodes of The Hyperfixation he has been on too lmao
Jakey's talk about working on his album is so inspiring for me. I'm currently at the end stages of working on my own debut album, and without having Jakey to look up to and to relate to, I don't think I'd be able to start this journey. Him being so open about his struggles with it, in this episode but also in the past, has inspired me immensely.
If you want to understand Konami’s relationship with Hideo Kojima, Google the in-house nickname they had for him in the early 2000s: “Ojama”. They made YuGiOh creatures that seem to be meant to mock Kojima, his sexuality, and maybe even his behavior. Regardless of what specifically happened, they clearly hated him on some level for a long time lol
That's gross but also I'm not surprised at the stereotypical Japanese company treatment. There was a way to have both parties leave and Konami just decided their cash cow was worth it.
Regarding BOTW vs TOTK, people always say we got scammed for TOTK being a $70 DLC pack…when in reality, we got scammed in 2017 because BOTW was just a $60 demo for what TOTK would eventually be lol. TOTK improves on just about EVERYTHING BOTW did, and that's coming from someone who doesn't adore either of them the way some people do. I admire the things they did, but it's just not for me. That doesn't stop me from being mind-blown by some of the insane creativity they put into that game.
"Fans turn on that I didn't even know were in there" absolutely losing it during this segment, I'm having the same experience with my switch. Feels like I'm going to have to get a support system started to get it through totk lmao. So glad that you're having Jakey on! Every new guest feels like a personal gift tbh, I love this podcast and y'all and your friends so much ❤️ Thanks for giving my adhd crazed brain the dopamine it craves!!
Jakey is kinda hitting on a point I think is important. Video game and music reviewers don't necessarily give their full attention to the thing they're reviewing. You assume when you read a review that they tried to really absorb the content but they very well could've been doing other things at the same time that take focus away. Like playing a game while the album they reviewed was playing in the background.
This seems as good a place as any to mention that Google stadia was so under appreciated. I played like 1000 hours on that platform, and then it went out of business and all of my purchases were refunded. I played the new and awful Saints Row, all the way thru like 60 hrs, and then it got refunded. Same with Cyberpunk, RE Village, R6 Siege and a bunch of other games. I don’t debate that it will go down in history as a failure, but my experience was so positive. It felt like 2 years of basically free gaming. RIP Stadia
I'm absolutely amazed by how many different people Jarvis is friends with I've watched Jakey's videos for a long time now, and also the recent one, so when I saw this podcast ep it felt like the multiverse crossover
I had a dream that i was having a breakdown and Jarvis was comforting me and he asked if he could call my dad. I wailed "I DONT HAVE A DAD!" And he cheerfully responded "No way! Me too!" And that was the end of his presence.
Two additional Max Payne things - one of the first games to have photo-mapped textures. Instead being drawn textures, they were all taken from photos, made low-res, and plastered on some flat polygons, but the look at the time was amazing. Second - the trippy dream sequence was one of my favorite moments in gaming for years.
I binged Better Call Saul at the end of last year on recommendation from a few of my friends and have only seen a few episodes of Breaking Bad here and there because my dad loves it, but I absolutely loved it! I knew some of the lore going in just because of how big Breaking Bad is and one of my friends helped to fill in the blanks, especially with the last season. And after finishing, I went back and started Breaking Bad but couldn't watch further than the first few episodes because my mom has an extremely similar cancer diagnosis to Walt and it became too difficult for me to sit through. But BCS is definitely one of my favorite shows I've ever watched, I'd recommend it to pretty much anyone regardless of whether they've seen Breaking Bad.
Fun fact about venmo: linking a bank account gives them access to the entirety of your purchase history (and all future purchases). Did I say fun fact? I meant fundamentally disturbing !
I also regard it as one of the most spectacularly beautiful games with just incredibly creative world design. There are valid critiques to make of SS, but damn if it wasn't one of the best video game experiences I've ever had.
@@ThatCrazyBookWyrm couldn't agree more! so many games have so many flaws, but the internet hardly reacts to them as harshly as it does with skyward sword. there are certain internet personalities to blame for that but either way, it's a spectacular experience! i've played every zelda game and ss left the deepest impact on me for sure
I'm glad they talked about the fantano reaction on jakeys album because that initial stream reaction he did never sat right with me, it was cool to see jakeys perspective on it. I'm glad he didn't let it get to him too much in the end
When Jarvis said he's at ~60 hours of gameplay in TOTK (@9:49), I paused the video to see how many hours I've put in...... I'm at 145?! 😅... excuse me, I'm gonna go outside now
As a Black person idk if i would be more upset that they totally did the Black best friend trope for a decade or that one of the few Black characters we got in the MCU wasnt actually Black at all but an alien 🙃. Imma keep watching to see
As a woman who was a journalist and editor for 6 years at a major (local) games and electronics publication and someone who has developer friends at major studios all over the globe I have so much to say about all of the discussed topics...🙈 Tldr: generally speaking, you got a lot of things right, and you're well informed. Kudos to the whole team. 😊
oh god, the part about showing his new video to his family hits home for me as an animator lol. Also Jordan on perfectionism (start of the last segment) is great
I was like 60 hours into tears of the kingdom and for reasons that aren’t pertinent I lost that save file and had to start over. And am now over 100 hours into tears of the kingdom and I’m STIL FINDING NEW SHIT. I don’t get how they did it, it’s incredible.
I think what's interesting about breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom as a zelda fan is to looking back on a lot of the previous games and find some of the early seeds of that game in it. Like skyward sword introducing stamina and I think some of the parries and stuff you can find twilight princess
tbh i think the voice acting in BOTW is unfairly roasted… but i do think that they’ve definitely improved on the writing/acting a lot in TOTK! i think people have a bad reaction to zelda and her delicate british accent cuz we aren’t used to the zelda games being voiced in the first place
First time hearing the pod. Shout out to Jordan being able to engage with the gaming topics deeply. Feel like a lot of topics deserved much more discussion but understandably the topics moved on since Jarvis couldn't keep up. Shout out to him for being a LOST fan though.
i have well over 100 hours in tears of the kingdom and let me tell you, having completed every main quest i cried. a lot. especially at the end of the game
Loved hearing jakey get really personal about the making of the album and dealing with the fantano stuff. I just saw that fantano clip recently. Also, pine barrens hit me much later as well!
I'm a 80s kid who played Zelda on NES and SNES and while they are timeless gems I understand what you all mean. A lot of people want more games like that and while there is a place for it the new Zelda games are perfect for our times. They just work so well.
I mean there is 100% a problem with the west and voice acting. There was a period in 2007-2013 that was so good, and in western media the voice acting still works, but when something comes out of another country, both the translation and the actor's ability to bring stuff to life has been sorely lacking fr
In regards to people getting bent out of shape because of reviews- I think it comes from the same mentality about games being expensive y’all also discussed. People act like games are very expensive, so if a reviewer gives a bad game a good review and the reader/viewers buys it, their money is wasted. And then they don’t have the money to game, I guess. I think it’s silly because there’s limitless opinions on games on the internet, and because that exact situation applies to very few gamers. It’s a lot more common to find people with backlogs of games they haven’t beaten or ever played, and these days lots of people play free games. So even if you buy a bad game, it’s not like your ability to play video games is suddenly cut off at the knees.
this was such a fantastic episode !!!!!!!! was so happy to see jakey was on. listening to the three of them talk about games & other passions was so awesome. ❤️❤️ big love
