That whole thing about not being wrong is so relatable, I once repeated the quote "If thou tastest a crust of bread, thou tastest all the stars and all the heavens" but I couldn't remember who said it so I looked it up and google said Robert Browning. So I looked up what poem he said it in and google said Paracelsus. So I looked up the story and it does not appear in that story at all. I also found that WB Yeats said it and quoted it to Paracelsus, the actual guy not the story. So I looked him up and unfortunately all his work is in German. So I asked one the the foremost English language experts on Paracelsus (you can just email university professors) if he said it and his response was "well it certainly is representative of his worldview, but I do not recall him ever saying that exactly." So my best guess is that WB Yeats said it as a summation of Paracelsus' philosophy and he wrote it in the form of a quote. This shit took me a week and I was just going to text the quote to a friend under a picture of some bread I made.

I think you guys had a really nuanced and interesting conversation about the concept of safe spaces, it's hard to come to the conclusion that safe spaces aren't going to be perfect. Recognizing that is a really important aspect of advocating or just being a good "ally" (i hate that term sorry lmao). I see people all the time trying to contort themselves into the most all pleasing community and in a very small few of these spaces even resorting to tactics of harassment comparable to harassment campaigns run by the right. No one space is going to perfect, that's why there's a lot more than one. There's always going to be someone you don't get along with, there's always going to be some weird aspect to your community that someone doesn't vibe with. We are humans, there's irrational reasons for every single thing we think, feel, and do. I love that the theme so far (I'm about a third in) seems to be "Knowledge and how to share it with respect" I think especially neurodivergent people find that socialising through "oh!! I know this!! Let me tell you about it!!" is very natural. Every neurodivergent person I've ever met has held me hostage to tell me a random fact about the thing I expressed a small interest in. I have held many people hostage to tell THEM the fact about the thing. Neurotypicals can relate in a gossiping way, so if your interests revolve around pop culture or famous people they feel positively about it, but in general, they end up feeling like you're being a Know It All, or a Mansplainer, etc. But I say there's a difference between "sharing my knowledge" and "showing how smart I am". In cases where it's my field, I am absolutely peacocking lmao, but when it's stuff I just Know or Learned etc, I'm just sharing what I know because I know it! I think it's especially this modern day Virtue Signalling issue that really makes it so much worse these days. Like, when I know a company is evil and bad, I avoid it, but my friends typically don't. I'm fighting constantly with not being That Guy although all my talking points are Real and Well Informed. There's so much mess these days with the way the world is. Nobody fixes the real problems, so us little guys fight ourselves with tiny, fake ones.

dude I loved hearing their conversation about the way progressive folks online are fucking evicorated by their fan base. I always wonder how old those people are, cause I was definitely one of those people when I was in high school. I was slowly dying of an undiagnosed genetic condition, had severe undiagnosed cptsd and moral OCD. in that world of death and neglect I just … lost my mind? like my OCD ritual was literally looking at those ‘ur fave is problematic’ threads FOR HOURS. I did this everyday, multiple times a day, for at least a year. I’m so relieved I never posted anything … because if I had it would have been a violent level of disgusting bullshit. My whole life, parasocial relationships with RU-vidrs and Podcasters felt like the only safe relationships. And this was before parasocial was a common word. My little brain couldn’t tell the difference, didn’t understand how influencers were taking the place of parents and adult role models. Then I started to get really sick, I lost my ability to swallow more than a little food and my chronic pain kept me awake and out of my mind at all times. I barely remember what happened, but there was some random scandal with my favorite podcasters, and it broke me. Like full psychotic break probably… every bit of hatred that should have been directed at the people who neglected and abused me became targeted at online personalities. After that break it felt like I couldn’t trust anyone, and that anything ‘problematic’ was unclean, I couldn’t love it without being the monster my upbringing convinced me I was. It made me the exact stereotype of a hysterical, violently contempt filled sjw. I feel torn seeing those people now, because I wonder if they’re young like I was. Are they dying too? Are they being abused? Is their brain shriveled up from starvation? Are they unable to ever sleep? Are they in mind breaking pain? I think I give them too much credit.. I’m sure lots of these people are saner than I was, and obviously the reasons don’t change the intensity and horribleness of that abuse and bullying. I just always wonder if they’re Kids, lashing out and being stupid because they’re terrified of the one oasis in their world becoming as violent as their real life. Kids are fucking mean, they’re cruel, and they’re especially cruel if they feel like they have a reason (and something seeming yikes is a tempting reason). It’s weird seeing that violent cruelty hitting adults. Anyway … it’s 1:40 where I live and hearing them talk about sparked a lot of thoughts.

Jordan is so right about the vitriol in the fan community of the McElroys. I had to leave fan groups on Facebook because of so much of the hate and Discourse™. And then there's the general Travis hate that seems to be rife in the community, which just borders on ableism a good chunk of the time. Also I nearly left a comment last week saying "the thing Jarvis is talking about is body doubling" and I'm so glad now that I didn't 😅

I was really into the McElroys a couple years ago and am also on tumblr and I don't really keep up with them anymore but I've seen the posts he's talking about and just like. Of course they're not perfect theyre human for one and for two they are literally white men with a podcast lol. Creating safe spaces is indeed an ongoing learning process, especially as communities diversify. Parasocial relationships are another nuanced area; content creators must manage expectations while still fostering a sense of community. Self-censorship is particularly challenging in live streaming where a single comment can have lasting repercussions.

Hi, commenter from the other video here that Jarvis was referring to around the 28:00 mark. Just wanted to say that this is in line with my intention. He clearly knew what body doubling was, I was hoping to share a little information about the different recources I've found useful just in case anyone watching was interested in trying it out themselves. I added a lil comment under my original one when I got to the point in the podcast where he remembered the word to say something like "oops, he mentioned it!" I suppose I should have edited my original comment instead. My bad. Truly feel yucky that I gave him any negative feelings with my comment. I'm sorry, Jarvis! Appreciate your work immensely! 🤟🏻

Idk I really relate to feeling icky because someone misunderstood your intentions when trying to be informative and being misunderstood by a creator you admire can suck even more because it feels like that'll be the only impression they ever have of you? there seems to be an expectation that to like or support somebody with a platform you have to agree with absolutely everything they do, and that is really tied in with the concept of safe spaces, but like jarvis and jordan talked about, there isnt a way to make a space where everyone feels completely good and great all the time. people are complex and will say and do things you dont agree with. there are of course degrees to which each person may find things acceptable and not, but im not talking about anything extreme. surrounding yourself with only people who agree with you in every way is how you enter an echo chamber where you lose access to new ideas and knowledge that will help you grow. i get wanting to feel a certain sense of comfort from the content you consume, but especially with regard to Internet personalities, there are regular people behind the stuff you like watching. nobody is a perfect beacon of goodness, wholesomeness, morality or what have you. and it feels like something a lot of folks arent willing to acknowledge or grapple with. theres no requirements to being an Internet creator. at the end of the day thats just some guy you dont know fully, and its a big ask that is unreasonable to expect somebody to do and say everything you think they have to.

36:30 also the really sad thing is, when you give people a safe space they start to gain confidence with you as if you're closer friends, as Jarvis says, how it's a parasocial thing typically. But then suddenly they feel more comfortable to call you out over a mistake, because they know you'll apologize or feel bad. They won't ever talk back to their own bullies IRL because they can't mistreat someone who intimidates them, and because you don't want to intimidate your audience, they actually feel safe to mistreat you because they're letting all of their malice at the RL bullies who are too scary to fight, come out on you because you don't want to fight or be mean. While it's a good thing for super anxious people in marginalized grouos, to be in a safe place and gain confidence, they need to also be taught boundaries. Even people who are marginalized will marginalize others who they should be allies with, if they get that taste of confidence and power. It's a delicate balance and so even people who know what it's like to be yelled at, will start yelling at you when they sense that you won't yell back like their dad, and mom, and teacher, and bullies and friends, and everyone they want to yell at, but are afraid of. And so because they see you as a safe friend, sadly, they take it all out on you instead of realizing that you're one of the only people who would validate and respect them if not for some mistake you made that offended them. My family misgenders me sometimes or says the wrong name, but I know they respect me and it's only because they're having trouble breaking a very long habit, so I don't get annoyed every time, because it's so much more important to have them as allies than to nit-pick at their Freudian slips and accuse them of demeaning me when they've been trying so hard to respect my wishes. This is called picking your battles, realizing something isn't worth arguing, especially whe you know the person you're arguing with knows what's right and they just slipped or they didn't think of it the way you think they did, so you're just telling them what they know and nagging, like an angry toxic parent yelling at their kid for not making the bed ("are you stupid? Are your arms broken? You can't make your bed when I tell you to?" You're just being demeaning to get someone to jump through your hoops). We need to stop haranguing allies for every mistake because we're afraid to go yell at the actual transphobes and homophobes and racists, and allies don't want to fight with us so it's less scary for our social anxiety that magically goes away when we're yelling at people who won't yell back (you know who you are). It's pathetic, sucker punching someone who isn't fighting you in the first place. Like you can point out a mistake politely if you actually think they don't know, but you know damn well they aren't the kind of person to purposely disrespect people so why freak out and harass them? Because you're taking out ehat OTHER people did to you, on the person whonis easier for you to feel comfortable yelling at. It's not fair.

I don’t speak for everyone of course but my personal experiences with your content do make me feel safe and seen because of how you have expressed your support of my community and that knowledge in itself has created a safe space for me to turn on a video and feel comfortable that I’m going to be presented with content and ideas that align with my feeling of safety

Hi Jarvis, I doubt you’ll read this but I wanted to share my experience. I just had my deviated septum “fixed” on August 10th. By my birthday (the 19th) I was still feeling so bad I cancelled all my plans and took another week off work. On the 25th I had a nosebleed so bad I went back to the hospital and had my nose cauterised. I saw the ENT again on the 30th who said my septum is trying to push itself back into its original position, making it impossible to breathe through my right aside and basically making the surgery a waste of time and money. It’s apparently very rare so I’m just very unlucky and will need to have corrective surgery which will cost me ~$1450 out of pocket on top of the ~$4000 I already paid. I really hope yours goes much smoother and you’re able to podcast. The nasal flushes are the worst and take some getting used to. Best of luck!

One thing a lot of people don't get anymore is that people can change, The modern internet has been around for quite a while now and someone will drag out a tweet or video from like 10+ years ago and be like "Hey look at how shitty this person is." and its like, They literally aren't even that person anymore, even if they hold the same values, so much time has passed that too much of anyone changes by that point to even consider it a valid viewpoint to look at who they are now. I'm not saying completely disregard anything anyone has ever done in the past, but grabbing some random tweet/video/comment whatever from the past and shoving it around like its the sole core of who that person is, is just foolish. Second comment time on the subject of safe spaces, I’m going to briefly echo a lot of the other comments I agree w that often safe spaces aren’t actually all that safe from the level of like monitoring and pressure you feel in them, and that people put far too much reliance on other people on the internet to create spaces for them instead of trying to engage in building spaces for themselves and working within communities they have access to in person What I will say tho is that while I can be disappointed in creators I enjoy that feel ‘safe’ to me at times w things they say or do, I can also understand that that doesn’t make them ‘unsafe’ which I think is a problem a lot of ppl online have where being less than perfect suddenly equals bad. I think it’s more important to me to have people I like and respect online have those moments where I disagree w them but ultimately understand that this person would still stick up for/affirm me vibe, it doesn’t have to be so black and white where ppl must be infallible or they’re unworthy and I think ppl can be lured into a false sense of security around those who haven’t like outright said the things that would make them ‘unsafe’ bc they know to maintain their image Basically I’d rather people be human than ‘safe’

Or alternatively, riding behind a bus and then it suddenly stops because of a bus stop, and spewing hot fumes in my face as I have to quickly stop.
@SilverDragonJay
@SilverDragonJay 8 месяцев назад
yep, that's really what you have to do. A lot of people don't seem to realize it but bikes are neither pedestrians nor cars, they're a third thing and they need dedicated infrastructure. Ideally: infrastructure that is part of its own system instead of paralleling roads because no matter how nice the bollards are separating car traffic from bike traffic, its still not ideal riding beside a busy road. Since bikes take up less space, produce less noise, and are less dangerous to pedestrians, the most ideal situation would have bike paths snaking around through and between housing. That way the people living in and near that housing has easy access to bike infrastructure (which makes them more likely to _use_ the infrastructure) and it also enables you to give the bikes shorter, easier routes then what the cars get. Because if you're on a bike you really do want the shortest route possible, but if you're in a car it doesn't really matter because you're going faster with less effort to begin with. Sorry, I like this type of conversation.

@@SilverDragonJay I used to live in Houten, Netherlands, the most bike friendly city in Europe. It was great. Cars had to drive around the town to get into the center, while bikes and pedestrians could weave through. And Instead of car streets next to side walks, there were bike streets next to side walks. Now I live in a different city, with shitty bike infrastructure. The ability to bike safely is one of the few things I really miss.

dude i absolutely LOVE pokemon go im so so excited to hear other people talk about still playing it. it's one of my favourite games!! and also, like, it's free so weirdly it's one of the most easily-accessible pokemon games? all you need is your phone and as much as they encourage you make microtransations, it's still free to play and i do really really appreciate that for it

In my experience I would not trust an ENT to do non ENT things either lol. My ENT made me do an allergy test with them and when I later brought the results to an allergist she was like "yeah they did the test completely wrong" 💀

Lol needing a dopamine hit to build good habits is so relatable. Somehow the promise of new cute Pokémon are the rewards that really gets my brain going. I have never had better sleep habits than since I started playing Pokémon sleep. The promise of new Pokémon waiting for me in the morning, and knowing I'll be rated at the end of the week for how stable my sleep pattern has been has just completely killed my midnight doom scrolling habit haha.

as a trans person, seeing people refer to not calling kanye by ye as deadnaming is pretty insulting. it comes from a good place often, but it makes light of what deadnaming actually is. deadnaming is a purposeful and hostile insult and refusal to respect someone for who they are. it's used to mock and belittle, to be cruel and even to out people and put them in harm's way. it aint the same as a cis man changing his stage name for the millionth time to try to distract from his nazi arc

It gives off the vibe of the super straight thing, but seemingly not a blatantly bad faith construct.
