Spinosaurus Bone Density And Its Implications for Other Spinosaurids

Spinosaurs, in particular the genus Spinosaurus after which the group is named, continue to be a family of much mystery and intrigue, and as was seen with the description of the former's large and paddle-like tail back in 2020, there is still much we have to know about them. What followed from this description was a swath of discussion and heated debate on just how effective this tail would have allowed them to be as either a pursuit or ambush predator, and whether or not Spinosaurus as a whole was more of a terrestrial wader, only entering the water when necessary, or being an effective swimmer being continually talked about.
A more recent description made early in 2022 has turned up and clarified information and data on not just Spinosaurus, but also their close relatives like Suchomimus and Baryonyx, which, alongside other animals, has revealed a lot about them, and there are quite a few surprises to be had. I hope you enjoy.

Ah, I see. Spinosaurus and Spinosaurids in general are still not all that well understood, so the debates are more so on a larger scale as to what they were doing, whereas with Tyrannosaurus, it's ironing out more specific details on them. Not that there are still broad things to figure out on them, of course.

I have my doubts about Dr. Ibrahim's Spinosaurus interpretation. This reminds me a little too much of Jack Horner's insistence that T. Rex was a pure scavenger. I mean, OF COURSE T. Rex scavenged & was certainly very good at it. Predators like it when their dinner doesn't fight back. But the evidence was equally compelling that Rexy was a hunter as well. And we know A LOT more about T. Rex than we know about Spinosaurus. And the information we have is based on more reliable sources of fossil material. But being controversial gets you attention, and column inches from credulous journalists, and grant money...

Tbh I confidently back the position that Spinosaurus was a water based dinosaur. For such a big animal to have such a specialized mouth and hands was a fair amount of evidence. When the tail had some form of paddle shape i was very convinced and this just adds to that This however just makes the evidence that points against that view seem even more weird. Why did this creature have a sail. Are we misinterpreting some facts and how the muscle and fat was on this animal?
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 2 года назад
There's actually a study that indicates the sail served as a stabilizer when submerged, and to act as a fulcrum for powerful head/tail strikes at prey swimming by.
@HenrythePaleoGuy
@HenrythePaleoGuy 2 года назад
Indeed! A secondary function as some form of display is also likely, although its extent across the sexes is still unknown.
@sarielle85
@sarielle85 2 года назад
If Spinosaurus spend it''s days submerged in water, it wouldn't have marked its territory with feces (as Tyrannosaurus could have done). So the sail could have served is a display structure (probably with colorful sexspecific and age-specific patterns and/or colors) to tell other Spinosauri "I'm here" and either "stay away I'm bigger" or "come here, I'm an attractive mate". It would definitely have been easier to find a mate that way. Mating calls would scare away all the fish, so that wouldn't be a good option for Spinosaurus to find a mate.
@kuminanida333
@kuminanida333 2 года назад
Sails are always such a odd and tricky thing to explain. It seems like they are never straight forward. Dimetrodon is another example of this. I heard there was some evidence awhile ago to suggest it did not have a full sail and instead had exposed bone
@minutemansam1214
@minutemansam1214 2 года назад
@@kuminanida333 The Dimetrodon that had 'exposed bones' was likely injured or sick, which is why it had such spines.

Compare with cormoran and not just with egrets. Cormorans also have that kind of S-shaped long neck, yet they are very clearly divers (the Galapagos species even lost its ability to fly altogether while changing nothing in the rest of their anatomy). They may still have stalked from above but doesn't seem to me that the neck shape says much here, the S-shape is good at launching quick attacks from any position: now the fish thinks it's at a relatively safe distance, now it's in the mouth.

Investigations and conclusions such as this are continuing to prove at least some of the theories of Brian J Ford. While I do not necessarily agree with many of his ideas, it is wonderful to see that as we discover more about the ancient world ruled by the dinosaurs that at least a few of his conclusions are being proved correct.
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 2 года назад
Spinosaurids != dinosaurs in general. Using spinosaurids to try to justify Ford's idea of all dinosaurs being aquatic is like saying all mammals are aquatic because whales and pinnipeds are.
@mariannepartridge359
@mariannepartridge359 2 года назад
@@bkjeong4302 did you actually read what I said? I’m still very on the fence about most of Ford ideas, I’m simply saying that as more discoveries are made it may be possible that we become more comfortable with a world in which a good deal of dinosaur species-certainly not all of them - we’re at the very least much more comfortable in water than we had previously believed. I have said this before elsewhere. All dinosaurs being aquatic? Certainly not. Some dinosaurs or even quite a lot being comfortable moving around in it and perhaps spending more of their lives in and around it then we would like to think? Perhaps. Look at the rhetoric are used and Think about what I actually say rather than putting generalisations in my mouth.
