I remember watching hockey back in the 60's and 70's as a Montreal fan. Being so long ago, I sometimes question the accuracy of how I remember the game being. Derek confirmed that I remember it accurately. It was such a different game. The rosters really didn't change much from year to year. Every player tough as nails. And Bobby Orr. He was just so much better than every other player. Sanderson? Easily the most hated Bruin to a Montreal fan. Thanks Chiclets for bringing in a true legend of hockey!

What an absolutely great interview !!!!!

In his book he said they used to make different sounds to communicate on the ice and to avoid false calls for drop passes ect......(ie) "you got me, drop it" after falling for it a few times, they started doing different animal noises to avoid this. So he used to make a turkey noise. But I guess he knows better than me, but that was how he was called turk

I grew up in the bay area and we had the Oakland Seals. I got to see all the great in 71 and 72. I got to meet Gordie Howe on a rainy day. We got ring side seats and my brothers waved at him and he came over to us. signed our program and I asked him a stupid question. "What's it like to have a steel plate in your head?" He said "Ir's cold" and then we said thanks and he skated away. My brother put a Seals sticker on the back of Canadians Goal Tender when they came back and he played part of a period with it on his back.

Coach Harry Sinden was the classic Canada's Summit Series coach in 1972, his assistant was....John Ferguson!

One of the more interesting people who has ever come through the NHL. Highest of highs and lowest of lows. Fascinating guy.

Grew up a Leafs fan but as a kid everybody loved Derek..Thought he was the coolest thing around..

I was 13 in 1970. I wore 16 on my jersey because of him. Great stories !

If Sinden was coach in 70-71, I wonder what their record would've been. They had 57 wins and 399 goals. At the time, the owners probably thought they were geniuses for letting Sinden go until they got upset in the first round.

Turk....loved this man Especially calling B's games in the late 80's and early 90's with Fred Cusick Derek was the ultimate homer and it was the best on the local broadcast. Ken Lineseman or Nilan would pole axe someone and derek would say shit like "look at the drama queen, you'd think she got chopped with an axe" or he would call it a dive...lol or calling the fights, no bruin ever lost.

Sanderson was a tremendous hockey player. One of the best passers that I have ever seen. He could feather a back hand pass to a player going at full speed. I have seen him do a behind the back pass and hit a winger at full speed going on a break away!

wow this is like old home week. i watched sanderson in the falls ( i'm from welland ) and i went to school with cam bissonnette, paul's dad. i watched bobby sheehan in st. catharines. and believe me that there was nothing like the old six team league.

04:50: Correction. Bobby Orr is actually 2 years younger. However, Orr came into the NHL 1 year earlier (1966) than Sanderson (1967).

His book was an interesting read. I recommend it.

Great guy. Some of his ideas are stuck in the past. There are reasons the back-pass isn’t used as much anymore. It’s become less effective. Same with slap shots. There is less time and space now. A back-pass gives a goalies and defenders more time. The slap shot gives defenders more time to defend. Of course sometimes it’s the best play so both are still utilized in the modern game.

No one's faster than Bobby Sheehan. 12:13 Didn't know anything about Espo at first because he only saw Toronto and Montreal back then. 15:05 "I had some (blank)." What did he say? Had multiple fights after that and his teammate came to defend him when his arm was done. 57:46 Losing Harry Sinden. Went with Tom Johnson, rookie coach.

Derek Sanderson was a great hockey player. He had great speed on the ice and he once scored 28 goals for the Bruins in 1970 and won a Stanley Cup for the Boston Bruins in 1970 along with Bobby Orr. But he had a major drug and alcohol problems. Drugs and alcohol near killed him. Boston management should check on him. Shame on Boston Bruins coach Harry Sinden and the owner. Harry Sinden did not care about his players. He was a mean and nasty man. Pro hockey in the 1960s and 70s was a criminal organization. Fighting should never be allowed in hockey. Fighting should be considered assault and battery. If I was an NHL commissioner, Any fighting that results in serious injury should be suspended for 2 months without and a 19 day jail sentence. Fighting results in concussion, head injuries and CTE. Shame on NHL players and coaches. They should ban from the NHL

The difference after 2004 the NHL took out the red line so the game is faster for that reason. I heard Bobby Orr skated 1 second flat blue line to blue line.

I remember reading his biography in the early 70's. He was flashy on the ice, very effective and a great sweep checker...another lost skill

these guys dont know how to ask questions , and then do a poor job of following up after sanderson answers . ie:how was his relationship with bucyk ?, esposito ?, also not being on the 72 team canada ? although we know it was because of the wHA , but did he watch the series ? , it was good that they let sanderson talk , but sanderson will say only what he wants to say .
