Well, "Squid Sisters" is a lot more cool and trendy sounding than "Cuttlefish Companions".

First they reveal the Squid Sisters aren't sisters, now they are not even squids!

I feel that them being cuttlefish instead of squids might be common knowledge in universe. I feel “Inklings” is a lot more varied than just squids.

There are different types/species of Inklings, and Octolings.

It would make sense for captain cuttlefish to be a cuttlefish and the squid sisters are related to captain cuttlefish so it makes sense for them to be cuttlefish

I'm a big fan of using "inkling" to refer to all ink-producing creatures. We could also generally refer to all of these decapods as "squids" in the same way that the game characters refer to all denizens of inkopolis as "fish"

You didn't even mention that Cuttlefish are known for hypnotising her prey, which is quite amusing for a pair of Japanese-themed idols with die-hard fan bases.

I think Marina is also turquoise October, the person who made all the music in hero mode because she loves music, her main ink color is turquoise, and sometimes when pearl and her are doing the news pearl will ask Marina what her favorite month is Marina will ask her if she is just making an octopus joke because octo is in October. If that actually is her favorite month it would make sense that the octarans would know her as the artist turquoise October. They also might not know she’s on the side of inkopilis which would explain why she has access to octaran caves and all the materials she needs to make the stages for splatfest, she’s a popular artist and they don’t know she’s not on their side anymore.

Well, another clue is in the Octo Expansion, when you first enter the subway, Cuttlefish says “I’m going to rest my cuttlebones for a bit”

About Marina's eyes, My guess is that she's still an octoling, just a different subspecies. My guess is that before the octolings lived underground together, there where two groups, and one had more environmental pressure to evolve a different shape of pupils. Since there aren't really any land animals with pupils shaped like that, I'm going to guess that Marina can't see as well as say, agent 8. My guess as to why Agent 8's ancestors evolved these rounded eyes where Marina's ancestors didn't, is simply that Agent 8's ancestors needed them more. Perhaps it could be due to the lighting, other animals, geography, plants, what weapons they used, or perhaps one was mainly nocturnal while the other was diurnal. Whatever it was, SOMETHING put pressure on one group to evolve new pupils, while the other stayed the same as their octopus ancestors. My guess is that the round pupils are a more dominant trait, meanwhile the dumbell shaped ones are more recessive, which is why you don't see many octolings with eyes like Marina's.

Calling it, next game will have Cuttlelings, can't wait for other molusks, Clamlings, Oysterlings

What about Marina? Simple answer: her eyes and hair are a genetic mutation. And she may even be stronger and smarter than most other Octolings because of the mutation, which we can grasp from her file shown in the chat logs of Octo Expansion. It’s completely feasible that she simply had a genetic mutation that made her different from other Octolings. But that’s just a theory. A crappy theory.

I loved this video! I really hope they introduce cuttlefish into Splatoon 3.

The idols have two different colors because maybe they can dye parts of their tentacles. I remember seeing a fan-made project for Splatoon 3 where they had an option to make your hair look like those of the idols. So that part is cleared.

I agree with your theory for the most part, accept that you have to keep in mind that there is a generation between cap’n cuttlefish and Callie and Marie. Chances are, one of their parents was an inkling, which could mean that they are just part cuttlefish. Everything else about your theory made sense though.

In dutch the Squid and Cuttlefish are both called: "inktvis". (Which means ink fish btw)

There are a group of people that walk along the shores picking up cuttlebones that have been washed up. They are known as: cuttleboners

So basically Cuttlefish have vocals, considering every Cuttlefish known is a talented musician- even Cap'n Cuttlefish gets into rap (and literally the first thing he and Pearl do upon meeting each other is to ad lib a rap).

I feel like we maybe getting a cuttlefish expansion in splat 3. Also if you look at the eyebrow shapes of the idols, marina has a very similar one to octolings and Callie, Marie, and pearl have similar eyebrows

All inklings aren't exactly all identical, like all human aren't all identical. Like some people have blue eyes and some have green eyes. And I think the "bones quotes" are just fourth wall jokes.

Couple things, one: if you go to Maritime Memory Splatoon 1 amiibo thing, the front of their trucks have their squid forms. Two: Captain Cuttlefish is only ever referred to as Cuttlefish in translations, in the original versions, his name means “dried squid.” Three: Cuttlefish at the end of 3 literally turns into a squid. Four: the players and stuff in 3 have the other color at the end.

Inklings can also change their color. It's shown in the splatoon manga

Ive been looking for a vid about this cuz i was like "why does the squid sisters look different from the inklings?" So glad i found this vid.

I only have what's provided from here, a quick Google search, and what little I remember from watching a let's play of Splatoon 2, but the one thing I noticed is that when it comes to official art, Marina's ears are never shown. In fact, she's always got them covered by her headphones. Call it a tenuous connection, but what else looks a lot like an octopus if you were to take away something that covers their head? The armored cephalopods identified as nautiloid. This could also explain the color gradient in her tentacles, as from an evolutionary perspective the color gradient shifting from the shell to the tentacles, especially if that trait was passed down by the Nautilings that succeeded at getting mates, either by being the most attractive or simply surviving persecution and being the only ones left. This only leaves the shell to explain, and there's a couple ways to do so. The first and most simply explained is that, as the nautilings developed other ways to defend themselves, the hard exoskeletal shell became a more last resort defense, becoming endoskeletal like that of a fish or a mammalian. The alternative option is that their evolution has come so far along that the armor plating is practically vestigial, only serving as a marker that they're different from the octolings, which seems to be a very big concern in the Splatoon universe. Theoretically, instead of the normal ear shapes, Marina would have blunted ear "plates," which would look more like bony protrusions from the sides of her head instead of the more fleshy ears of the other inkling subraces. If this were the case, something so drastic would be something that she'd want to have hidden. Being an octoling in Inkopolis must be hard enough without being this different, even rarer strain of inkling

It's possible that they're cuttlefish, however though, I doubt that inklings would discriminate them. Just take Ammoses Shellendorf (Sheldon's grandfather) for example, it's clear that he's a horeshoe crab, yet he's still accepted to be part of the Squidbeak Splatoon, despite being different from inkling.

Theory: Ink/Octolings have a makeshift skeleton that can dissolve and reform when going into swim form

Why would Nintendo even go through the work of making the Squid Sisters cuttlefish? Also, Marina is an elite octoling... the ones with black hair and kelp on the sides.

Now that they're cuttlefish and all I'd better be seeing some of that Cuttlefish stealth and Hypnosis come into play...

It also wouldn't be too much of a stretch to imagine, that Callie and Marie are of both squid and cuttlefish descent. Of course there's no evidence to back this up, but it's a possibility

We've also never seen their "squid" forms.. but like you said at the end, maybe Splatoon just considers cuttlefish to be a species of squid or inkling cause they're so similar. So they're all still "inklings" rather than a separate race like ocotlings, just, different types of them. Different "breeds" if you will. Plus, an important note, Captain Cuttlefish doesn't have the cross-eyes that would be indicative of his species. But it would be super cool if they were a secret third race.

I’m pretty sure Inkling’s teeth are the beak of their squid forms. Also the shoulder blades could just be structural support made by their bodys.

Agent 3's official art has her with green tentacles that go into purple at the tip. Maybe changing the color at the tips is just a fashion thing, cause I've seen Inklings in the plaza and square that have pinkish tips. Or maybe Agent 3 is a cuttlefish too :/

Lemme debunk this: Captain cuttlefish is an inkling. It’s been confirmed so many times, we see his squid form and other charecters call him an “old squid”. Also Callie and Marie have quite minor differences, like slightly different eyes and ears and different tentacles. Apart from that they’re regular inklings. How would marie fit down the drain if she had bones? Why do we see there squid form. Why are they confirmed to be squids? Also them talking about “breaking bones” is probably messing up squids with other species, like fish. And if they were cuttlefish they would’ve called them selfs the “cuttlefish cousins” because that wouldn’t cause any controversy, only a couple species are at odds with inklings (octopi and salmon). So why would they straight up lie about there species if it wouldn’t cause any consequences?

They might be called inklings rather than squidling because cuttlefish look like squids but backwards so any cuttlefish can look like a squid if it swims backwards

Another theory that said pearl was a cuttlefish, mentioned her 'tentacles' turn inwards instead of Laying flat like other squids and in one of the news casts Marina mentions wanting to change the name of inkopolis to something more inclusive (the name having to do with cuttlefish or fish similar i believe) and pearl immediately says something along the lines of "that's a much better name, lets do it!" Showing that she would want her species being represented
