Check out four ways to split tone in darktable! Each way offers some advantages and disadvantages so be sure to check out all four! Note: you can also use color balance RGB for split toning B&W as donatzsky pointed out. Just use color balance RGB for the B&W conversion instead of the monochrome module.

Always appreciate all your DT tutorials. Always on point and easy to digest. Have you tried Ansel yet? AKA Aurelien's DT 4.0.

I tried it, but you should take my opinion with a grain of salt since it was some months ago so I didn't try the most up-to-date version. However, when I did try it, it was missing way too many modules to be useful to me. I would like to try it again but there's no official MacOS build so I'm afraid I can't.

Darktable is great, but there are so many modules. My understanding was that Filmic RGB and 1-2 modules were the go-to modules for everything but seeing you using other modules kind of confuses me. Thanks for the content ❤

Well, if you just want to get something like basic out of camera JPEGS and do some basic modifications, Filmic + 1-2 other modules might work. But there is no way you can do a full range of editing with just filmic and a couple modules. Believe me, I experiment heavily with every feature of darktable, and in practice there are often better ways to do things than using filmic...to be honest I don't like filmic all the time. I know what people say in theory about scene-referred and other mumbo jumbo but I just care about what works. Peace!

@@WildEarthPhoto Thanks for the reply. I am interested in buying your Udemy course, but I want to ask first if it is up-to-date with the latest modules of Darktable, including Filmic.

Thanks for your interest! The course is up to date, and we are currently in the process of updating it now with some additional info. However, be aware that we do not even talk about Filmic in our course, but we are considering an additional module to explain it.

I'm curious why you say only the split toning module works with b&w. I just tested, and color balance rgb in fact works just fine. And you forgot about tone eq. By using the color channel blend modes, it can do essentially the same things as rgb curve. Although it's a bit more clunky, since you have to create a new instance for each channel.

Thanks for the comment! I meant that the split toning module actually adds color to the B&W shot. The Color Balance RGB module DOES affect a B&W but doesn't add the split-toned colors. Yes, there are a few other ways also, good point! I just thought these were the easiest.

@@WildEarthPhoto I'm not sure that I follow. If you put a color balance rgb instance after the bw conversion, it does exactly the same thing as the split toning module, although the different algorithms used do create a slightly different look.

@donatzsky... Yes, you are right if you use the color balance RGB for the monochrome conversion, that is true. In the video, I meant with the monocrhome module but I'll add a note in description about your technique. Your method works also.

@donatzsky -- Okay, I updated the video description with your method. It's a nice method for sure.

@@WildEarthPhoto I actually don't use CB RGB for the conversion, but color calibration. CB RGB only let's you desaturate, while CC gives you full control. And I'd like to point out that monochrome is one of those naughty LAB modules that it's best to avoid, as it can cause artifacts (both due to being LAB and the algorithm used).
