This is a older video i had saved. I gave this knife away on my patreon some time ago. If you'd like to join my patreon and learn about the giveaways link in description. I also have a link to daddyo edc spyderco's video where he goes into detail about a spyderco compression lock that seems to be a complete fail. That video is a must watch imo.
Very cool that the designer reached out to you and gave you his perspective on the kapara. Your criticisms are valid though, especially needing a little more space and/or jimping for the lock tab. I still like it a lot, very comfortable in hand, light weight. Sitting here watching your video flipping my all black manix 2, a knife I prefer over the pm2 which I think is a bit overrated.
The Kapara really is an all-around excellent knife. Although it's obviously not a better tool than that premium Japanese Chef Knife, I also would not feel comfortable packing a razor sharp, 8" inch, fixed blade Chef knife: fishing/ kayaking, cycling/touring, hiking or Preparing food doing these things with a super sharp, LARGE Chef Knife. Also, the long, slender blade of the Kapara make it a much better fishing and filleting knife than a Chef Knife or even The SpydiChef, another excellent, compact meal Prepper. The SpydiChef, with it's: Super Steel blade, geometry and blade height, make it a much better slicer and chopper, though. I have and like the: Kapara, SpydiChef and Drunken. In the less than 4 inch blade category, nothing beats the SpydiChef or Kapara for Base-Camp Food Prep!
Good video and I totally agree with the tendency that Spyderco has for designing handles and locks that put form over function. One of my favorite Spyderco knives of all time, design wise, was the Ed Schempp Kukri. Had to sell it because I kept poking and cutting myself while the knife was just closed in my pocket! The handle was so open and thin, the edge and point of the knife were only a millimeter or two from the sides of the handle.
If they didn't make that area contoured and round and so thin in the compression lock area that could most likely help. So instead of cnc that whole area just make it flat and the thickness of the scales on the back side of the lock. And maybe give it some cnc texture on the cf on that side also. Extend that metal up and put a bit of jimping onto the lock lever.
Not trying to argue with your point on your finger being in the way of the compression lock when closing the Hanna but think about the actuation of a liner lock or a frame lock yes some can be closed with one swooping motion it most take a hand reset at the halfway point of it closing as a safety feature think of it in the same perspective on the Hanna your finder stops it as a safety feature so it’s not a bad thing the compression lock does that on another knife as well just can’t think of it. But if you want a bad example of the use of a compression lock look at the Spyderco tropin the blade almost cuts your finger when it shuts now that’s a bad and flawed knife.
I know it's probably on the cheap side of knives for you but it you get a chance take a look at the S.O.G terminus xr wit the S35VN. And do a test video if you can.
I'm gonna go pry a pallet apart with a Kapara Since you like lowered tips and less belly, are you a fan of insingo Sebenzas? I feel like all your Sebenzas I have seen are drop points.
Folding knives as kitchen knives never made sense to me either. I used to be a cook though, so I thought maybe they just didn’t know about cooking? Although I think people end up using folding knives in the kitchen just so they can use them, more than ignorance or anything else.
I'll actually probably do a video on this. I think a lot of knive guy's are to PC to talk about this but I'll give it a shot. And i would have to think about it. For a none fixed knife i would want something concealable and preferably black. My way of thinking if I'm going to use a knife to defend myself the other guy isn't going to know i have it.
A lot of what you're saying regarding kitchen knives just doesnt matter to the average person. The vast majority of arent doing anything in the kitchen that makes the difference between those three knives matter.
