@@Hardcaslte On my road bike I have Etap (road wireless if you are not in the know). I love it for racing and hard group ride. For training, I'd be fine staying cable actuated. For racing I like the fact that you don't have to think at all...just push on the button,,,bam, shift. FOr cyclocross , even racing, not sure why, but I love cable actuated. My MTB also cable actuated, but I do see the advantage of electronic when your riding really technical uphill, out of breath and just want to be lazy and not shift conciously. I will definitely buy it in a year or two when these come up used! I hate regular rear derailleurs, I ride about 2000-2500km a year on my mtb and I always get problems with adjusting them properly after a while. Be it from crashes or regular wear and tear, I always end up with a derailleur that won’t shift properly into some gears, no matter how much I try to adjust it and I’m sick of replacing them! When you have a small electric motor that you can teach in micro steps all that trouble should be gone. Sure it will still be pricy used, but when it still shifts good after crashes or the regular miles I put on it, it will be cheaper than the two or three regular derailleurs I have to buy over time!

It is expensive, but think how far we've come since the first release of AXS at $4k. It's actually attainable now, this is kind of what we've all been waiting for. Yeah it might come down more, I'm sure they'll release an NX cheaper version, but for a GX level equipment I'd think it won't come down too much more. It'll never be near the price of a traditional mechanical GX since that would make their mechanical sets obsolete. I feel like the difference now is they're all the same with the exception of the material. Maybe they'll do an NX with a cheaper/weaker motor to bring the price down? In mechanical derailleurs the actuators and mechanical parts are also higher quality, snappier, etc., but it doesn't seem like they're going that route this time for some reason. Like why buy an X01 or XX1 when it's exactly the same except .1 lbs heavier?

But when I get out on my bike, I don't really have a desire to be fiddling with apps, or charging batteries to make sure I can shift. I just want to--you know--ride my bike. Good, then, its not just me. As nice as this electric shifter is, its more expensive, heavier, will be obsolete in 10 years without parts or batteries or software support, and needs charging regularly. Id rather just take a yearly maintenance on my cables and a bit more thumb pressure on my shifters, thanks. Bikes are 1800s technology from the industrial age. Sure the materials and engineering are higher tech now, but fundamentally a bike uses the same technology that steam trains and sewing machines and guns use. Thats part of the appeal to me....Its a piece of the past that requires no gas, or electricity. Its like an AK47...it is robust, independent, and primitive. You can throw it in a shed, and 20 years later your grand kid can take it out, lube the pivots, and start riding again like its 2021. When i get an electric bike, with its attendant charging issues, i will expect it to shift electronically, and have lights and abs option, and stability control like a new KTM does...But i want my bike to be...a bike. Independent of a wall socket and power grid and software needs. I want 1880s tech, done in a modern way. Like you said, "when I get out on my bike, I don't really have a desire to be fiddling with apps, or charging batteries to make sure I can shift. I just want to--you know--ride my bike. "

Last year 2020 I purchased my Scott genius 900 tuned axs. I love my bike. However I hate my sram axs xo1. Reasons 1 if you happen to bump the shifter at an inopportune time it will shift up or down sometimes multiple gears then when you power down it will grind into whatever gear it chose. 2 sram doesn't have as much spring tension on the derailleur as shimano xt "which is what I've always run" on my old genius and spark, so when you smash thru a rock garden and take some jumps the chain slaps the upper triangle and chips the paint off!!! So you have to put some guard tape on the upper triangle... 3 it's hard for me to tell if it's my hub or because the spring tension is crap, sometimes and it's absolutely random I'll put the power down and it will skip and that majorly sucks! 4 in order to make sure I alleviated any chance of me just bumping the stupid electronic shifter "to make sure it wasn't operater error" I moved the shifter so far in on my handle bar it's actually hard to reach and not ergonomic at all. That's my complaint. I rode this bike for three months trying to like this, butt I can't give it a good review. I have my bike in the shop now I had them install the wire and xo1 shifter and derailleur. I wanted to go back to all shimano but the bike shop talked me out of it since I already had sram. I spent $8000 on my bike and I'm disappointed I don't want other people to make this same mistake and waste their hard earned money. Just to recap and be very clear, if you have something that works good now. STICK with it! This thing will not make you faster by any means. Save your money and upgrade your wheel and hub that will go much farther then this stupid electronic shifter. Lucas from Minnesota Sram take your overpriced junk and pound sand! That's me keeping it clean.

I agree with you and Marc above. If this integrated the AXS dropper post on one device, I would happily shell the $$$ out and get one. Then we just need a reliable hydraulic gyro, and route the front brake through the front tube/fork/stem.... then a wireless control for ebikes... then no more dealing with the cable tangle aftermath of a tiny crash .... I don't care much for GX vs X01 as far as the derailleur is concerned, but I went from a X01 (11s) to a GX (12s ) and the shifter feels plasticky, kind of cheap .... I feel no difference between my 3 bikes as far as shifting performance - XTR 12s, GX 12s and X01 11s..... but the X01 clicker just feels better than the other two. I wonder if the AXS GX derailleur would work with the X01 or XX1 wireless shifter at all. ps... I still have a bike with Hammerschmidt on it :O .. make those 12S and wireless and that will be the bomb.

Dope! Really excited to see this. Can you program the indexing like on the Archer system for if you wanted to run 10 or 11 speed / mix and match cassettes?

Does the pulley cage have the same measurements as the mechanical GX derailleur(52t)? Would it be possible to swap over the aluminum cage from the mechanical version to this AXS version to save some weight and maybe minimize the chain slap with a less heavy cage?

I'm from the tech sector. Why are we losing functionality for the sake of convenience? Why put batteries into something that doesn't need it. Cable shifters work just fine. "But they're complicated!, You have to run a cable from the front of the bike to the back of the bike" you're point? A cable linkage gives you a direct mechanical connection to the rear derailleur. This is leaving it all up to a wireless connection. After working with computers as long as I have I will take a direct mechanical connection all day!! The one nice thing about this coming out is it'll push the price of regular derailers down.

I am an engineer and part of this is convenience but the other part of this is that it works better. It is a dream to set up and once done you don't touch it again other than to clean it. It is basically maintenance free Lastly it is instantaneous and works better than a cable I suspect that some will baulk at the price but in all fairness for me the only reason I would not buy it is if I did not have the cash. That's the only reason I could think of not buying it poverty. I bought a dropper post because I swap bikes often and wanted a dropper on both so simply put it was cheaper to have a dropper that can be switched with no cables than one which needs cables or two that needed cables the switch takes minutes as to battery I top it up when I am at home lik e I do my cycle computer and my watch and my phone. Os it different to what you did before? Yes but I bet in 10 years you be driving an EV and that will be different to driving a ICE but we will all get used to it at worst and embrace the improvements

Does anyone else have the clutch disengage when landing heavy or casing jumps. Seems super dangerous as if you land heavy then have to put some cranks in immediately they just spin with nothing there. Should it overload on jump landing ?

Is electronic shifting solving a problem that doesn’t exist? Modern ‘mechanicals’ are excellent, fast, few hassles, no charging, no battery waste, won’t leave you stranded.

Cool, but not jumping on the wave til prices drop. You're talking about $10-15 in manufacturing costs with a monster premium. Love the de-cluttering on the cockpit, but principle alone I wouldn't buy it ... If it came with a 3 year warranty, maybe, but it's just too much money IMO right now.
