Wireless Shifting - SRAM GX AXS Review - Is it worth it?

We have passed this bike around, driven it across the PNW in terrible weather, ridden it through moondust, mud and snow in the name of this SRAM GX AXS Review. Without a doubt the SRAM GX AXS wireless upgrade kit has been one of the coolest bits of gear we’ve tested in 2021. No matter who’s on board or what we’re doing to the bike, the electronic SRAM GX AXS stuff just works. The durability, performance and simplicity of use all make this stuff easy to recommend, if you’re willing to drop the coin.
The GX AXS derailleur is just as water and dust proof as the higher end X01 and XX1 units, we don’t think it shifted any slower than those units and still held up to impacts and abuse thanks to SRAM’s Overload impact technology. As long as your derailleur hanger is straight, your chain isn’t bent and you’ve got all the teeth on your cassette in good shape, this system will shift without worry mile after mile. Battery life was pretty solid on this unit and we’re still running the original battery in the shifter. Cold temps and long road trips with the battery installed could affect battery range a bit. Since the system is motion activated, you may want to pull the battery out for long road trips to save all that battery power for shifting instead of bouncing down the highway. This of course presents the problem of losing your battery or forgetting it somewhere. When there’s nothing to forget, or discharge on a mechanical system, it could certainly be something to consider, but we’d risk it for how well this stuff works and how much easier it makes shifting and tuning.
There is a slight learning curve with the shift paddles, as they’re a bit different than mechanical versions, but we wouldn’t say it was anything major, or that we couldn’t get over. Plus, with the app you can customize which shift paddle does what, so you can easily set it up to work the way your brain thinks it should.
THE WOLF'S LAST WORD
Mountain biking is a passion pursuit for people of varying incomes and abilities. For many it’s a hobby, maybe even a lifestyle or even an addiction for some. For that reason, there will never be an agreeance on what exactly “budget” is, but when SRAM set out to create the GX AXS system, the goal was to bring World Cup-level athlete performance to a price point that more people could enjoy. It’s still far from cheap, but the fact you can have a top-tier wireless mountain bike shifting system for $600 is pretty damn cool. We are huge fans of the SRAM GX AXS wireless system and think it’s a very worthwhile upgrade if you’re looking to hop up your ride. Far from necessary, but absolutely welcome. Maintenance is reduced, performance is increased and so is ease of use, comfort, and the tidiness of your bike’s cockpit. We’re stoked on wireless shifter and hope to see a lot more mid-tier bikes coming spec’d with GX AXS in the future.
Price: $600 (Kit)

Spending $600 on this kit gave me pause but after running it for nearly 4 months now I have zero regrets. I'll run this on all future bike builds.

I have had two gx axs kits installed both on ebikes. One on a rise m10 and the other on the rail 9.7. I love the reduced clutter, reliable actuation on the controller every time, instant shifts and no worries about adjustments. Won’t go back, I plan to buy a third for a sentinel or ripmo whichever I can get first.

I’m putting together a ‘21 Moots Mountaineer YBB, and the frame has no rear derailleur cable mounting. My mechanic suggested the AXS upgrade and it’s being mounted now. Seemed like a worthwhile upgrade and will help maintain a very clean look. Should be ready tomorrow can’t wait to ride it.

I rode a bike with upgraded Shimano XT drivetrain. I was amazed how much better it felt and shifted than my SLX components. Being they this is a Budget version of the ALX systems am I going to get the performance and solid feel of the Shimano XT system I used. I learned the hard way picking an SLX build…

I've been running the GX AXS kit on my enduro bike (2019 Megatower) essentially since it was released. I agree the setup is so freakin' easy and shifting quality under load is great. I'm running this with a 12 spd Shimano 10-51 cassette and chain. As a long-time Shimano user (this is literally the first time I've run SRAM since the Grip-Shift days 25+ years ago) I love the shifter. I quickly released the forward part of the paddle could be used like a Shimano trigger with the index finger, so I acclimated to it instantly. So far, the only issue I've had is the B-tension screw seemed to back itself out as when I was cleaning and adjusted the bike recently, I noticed the upper pulley was shifting into the cassette. I reset the B screw and it's back to normal. Most of the riding the bike gets is at bike parks, so it gets a bit more abuse than regular trail riding. I also added a Reverb AXS dropper post to complete the full-wireless conversion. Because... why not. I find the Reverb AXS isn't quite as responsive as the cable-actuated droppers on my other bikes (Bike Yoke and Manitou), but it's acceptable. Removing batteries for long drives is somewhat annoying, but so far hasn't been an issue for me.

You need to use blue thread lock on your B screw just like on every derailleur. Assuming you set it right the first time - a piece of cake with the new Sram b-tension guide included - you never need to touch it again. That also assumes you don’t change to a different cassette in the future which may also require a new chain length. As for taking out the battery on long trips. Huh? Why? What do you consider a long trip? Putting in or taking out a battery literally takes 15 seconds.
@ianfurqueron5850

@@mrsmartypants_1 interesting. I've never had to apply loc-tite to a b tension screw in 30+ years of wrenching on bikes. First time I've ever had one back out like this.
@mrsmartypants_1
@mrsmartypants_1 2 года назад
@@ianfurqueron5850 It’s standard practice to use blue loctite on the b-screw adjustment exactly for the problem you have encountered (Sram or Shimano). It’s also standard practice to use it on many other bolts, clamps etc.. on your stem, the bottom bolts of forks and shocks etc… Few people do this, just like few people use a torque wrench. Inevitably all these people get bit on the trail or on a trip at some point in life.
@ianfurqueron5850
@ianfurqueron5850 2 года назад
@@mrsmartypants_1 I've used blue loctite on my bikes since... forever... and I work on my cars a lot, so I'm swimming in torque wrenches... but I've still never heard of needing to use it on a b-screw. I've also never had a b-screw go out of adjustment before. Over 30 years of riding... more bikes that I can remember, 90% assembled by me.

I was very sceptical at first. But…..it’s a complete game changer in my opinion. If you have the money do it. I’ve always hated messing with gearing that is never right and jumping. This is direct with almost zero error and very easy to adjust.
@IADMTB
@IADMTB 2 года назад
I own both the GX AXS and XX1 AXS kits. I use the GX AXS on my 12 speed XTR setup (XTR cassette, XTR chain, AB oval chainring, XTR crank) and I feel it shifts better than an XTR shifter and derailleur. Much smoother and less effort (I always felt the XTR shifter/shifting was stiff) plus it makes the correct shift every time. I don’t have to worry about readjusting the shifting due to cable stretch, don’t have to replace shifter housing and cable, etc. I know folks will say that’s a small price to pay, but there’s definitely less maintenance to do with electronic shifting, plus there’s less cables on your bike. Do I think AXS is worth it? Heck yeah and I won’t go back to mechanical shifting.

I have been spending too much time fine tuning my 4.5 years old Giant with mixed brands drivetrain, given that I name myself a seasoned mechanic. Now they are all sold out! I just picked up a 2022 Santa Cruz Bronson C “S” which came with the GX eagle group set. I really wanted the Shimano XT build, but it’s another grand that unfortunately is out of my budget. My new dilemma is going to be not giving in to the urge to upgrade my GX Eagle to AXS. I’m happy with the cable driven GX as far as shift performance goes, I just don’t like the ergonomics of the shifter coming from Deore XT shifter which has the added benefit of a gear indicator, as well as the ability to push or pull the far lever for up shifts. I’ve become so accustomed to pulling up shifts it’s making it difficult to transition.
@daved2023
@daved2023 2 года назад
AXS allows you to use your index finger to "pull" (which actually pushes the paddle) to shift outboard to a higher gear so you won't have to completely re-learn your routine. Also, if you run a Garmin gps (which I do) you can add the battery life and shift indicators to your GPS screen.

Dang Forest... That's a tough one and probably depends on what you're bashing it into... Are they glancing hits to downed logs, stumps? Or are they impacts to embedded rocks? part of the fun of riding bikes has always (until now) been the affordability of it . i've been riding all sorts of bikes since 1950 and bought my first bike , a Schwinn cruiser , for $50 . i had that bike for twenty five years . Then mountain biking came along and in the eighties i bought a schwinn cimarron , which later became known as a Gravel bike 😂. Then ten years later i bought an mtb for 1000 dollars . around the age of fifty i quit riding because of injuries and didn't start riding again until six years ago at the age of 69 when i was introduced to e bikes . i've had three e bikes in those six years totaling about 8000 €. Now the industry is trying to seduce riders into buying a SINGLE component that cost 12 times what my old schwinn cost and one fourth what my new e MTB cost . At 75 , i still love riding but may have to take out a second mortgage on my house if i want to ' up grade ' to something that looks cool because a cable is no longer cluttering my cockpit ??? fukin ridiculous ! 🤯

Haha. Thanks for the awesome story and so cool to see your bike riding history. We don't disagree with your statement by any means, and even said in the video, if we had our current finances to weigh and were considering buying this at retail would it be wise for our budget? Probably not. BUT, let's ask a question: Take inflation out of it...did your 1950's Schwinn have as much technology inside it as this derailleur and Bluetooth Controller? It is cool to see how we've evolved ,now let's just hope the boom that follows the tech revolution is the budget revolution! haha

You are my Hero! I am 51 years old and hope to ride as long as you do/did. I remember my first bicycle in the late 70s, a Huffy, and I dont think it was more than $70 new. I rode that bike for a good 4 years beeating the hell out it before it had tk be retired due to wear and tear. I remembered how much I love bicycles but kinda stopped riding then once I got my driver's license. Then fast forward to 1993, I got out of the Army after a 4 year Enlistment at 22, and first thing I bought was a nice Giant Bicycle with Full XT and fully rigid, and that thing was expensive at $600! And it was $950 with Rock Shox fork. The was a lot of money in 1993 as my Volkswagon Rabbit was only $3000. It does suck that Mountain Biking is so expensive now whee it is now considered an Elitist Sport. A standard cabled GX shifter and der. is already exoensive at $200; Then now they are asking us to pay $400 more for "E" version of this GX set up On the flip side though, all Hobbies are expensive these days, and $400 is not that much in the big picture if this thing gives us years of enjoyment. Also, the price of a decent New Car these days is about $30k, and a decent mtn bike starts at $3k. So in the big picture Mountain Bikes have not really gone up. At the time I bought that decent $1000 Mtn Bike, a mew car was going for about $12,000. AXS and other Blingy Bike parts are more for the Hobbyists like me, and not for the Practical People. I myself have not taken the jump into AXS yet, but have an AXS XX1 on hand, but no real hurry to install it because all my Cabled Derailleurs currently work just fine. However, I am looking forward to that day that I install that AXS "upgrade" and try her out.

Any trouble with it at bike parks? I've had my GX AXS for a month and a half and have a specific issue every time I go to the Angel Fire. It will skip from gear 12 up to gear 11 on its own. All adjustments have been verified by a mechanic. When you look at the app on your phone it will show to be in gear 12. In order to go back to gear 12, you have to down shift the controller to gear 11(derailleur is already in gear 11 and won't move) , then upshift back to gear 12. Its super annoying and happens every run on jump lines or chunk. It will not do this around the local trails.

Bike makers should make frames without cable and housing ports and stops for that cleaner look to pair with wireless drivetrains.

Interestingly, my Transition Spur comes with the brake cable routed externally. I've had AXS installed since new and have been toying with the idea of using the old shifter/dropper cable routing for the rear brake line. 🤔

My only concern is that proprietary battery. If it disappears then your in deep shnit. Plus 60 extra grams on an all carbon bike is a waste for efficiency freaks like me.

I did this exact swap. Although it shares the GX name and build components the shift is superior - precise and fast, way more than a cabled derailleur in my opinion/experience. I do think vendors should consider putting this as standard on all bikes over a price threshold as it would make little difference to a bike over 7k for instance, already a massive amount of money

@romma11

So on your analog bike you will have to charge shifter before you hit a ride as opposed to do nothing and will cost you $600 😂😂😅 this may make sense for ebikes as long as it is wired to main battery

"It's not our place to say if it's a good value or if the price is reasonable... If we had to shell out $600 of our own money to buy this, would we do it? Frankly I don't know. Provably not, because $600 is a lot of money. So... no it is not good value and the price is not reasonable. "That being said, if you've got the $600 and you want to upgrade to a budget system, no qualms about recommending this kit. It is worthwhile. It gives you performance and reliability... It's awesome from a performance standpoint." So... yes it is good value and the price is reasonable. Which is it?
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf 2 года назад
We never said it's not a good value or that the price isn't reasonable. You quoted us verbatim, "Not our place to say if it's a good value," because some people don't have $600 to spend on an entire bike. We've learned that no matter what we think is a good value or not, others will disagree, since value and affordability are subjective. To rephrase our summary and answer your question of "Which is it" -GX AXS is a very reliable, and great performing unit that is an awesome upgrade. IF spending $600 on a controller and derailleur is in your budget, then we would recommend this product.

"Still shifts" lol few kicks sand and water on a derailleur are nothing compared to what really have to bear on the trails.. that systems (rear derailleur) is obsolete and is not an innovation, simply is a technology taken from road bikes to mtb but has nothing to do with transmissions specifically developed to be conceived to be used on harsh conditions and low/zero maintenance... the future on off-road bikes must be the gearbox derailleurs, mechanic or electronic/mechanic are obsolete.
@ebarr9476
@ebarr9476 2 года назад
The Eagle AXS derailleur is HIGHLY PRONE TO DAMAGE. It sticks out too far and if you set your bike on the ground it may pivot on the derailleur and damage the pins and rivets which ruins the shifting quality. I had this happen and ZERO help from SRAM after 2 rides!!!! No mention of the axle mounted derailleur guard in this video @ 6'52''

Why don't you read all the other comments on this page, from people who paid for these components and let us know the percentage of people who are more than stoked.
