Stevie came on to the scene in 1983 when hair bands, parachute pants, and synthesizers ruled the airwaves. His heroes had always been the elder bluesmen that came before him...Albert King, BB King, Buddy Guy, Johnnie Copeland, Hubert Sumlin, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Otis Rush, John Lee Hooker, etc. Of course, he was also influenced by Jimi, Clapton, Beck, etc. In the 80s, blues was an afterthought and saw very limited air time on a few select radio stations. As a result, the elder bluesmen were stuck playing in shithole bars and back alley dives. Up steps Stevie and he took the music world by storm. No one, and I mean NO ONE, had a sound like Stevie. Hell, no one has a sound like his to this day. As he began selling albums and playing in large venues, he would tell his audiences to buy the elder bluesmen albums and to support those guys live shows. He also began to share the stage with his heroes and, in turn, they began to sell albums and play in much nicer venues. Another point to make about Stevie was his complete humility. Although Stevie was peerless, he gave everyone he played with 110% respect. He never tried to upstage or embarrass anyone. In fact, all the elder bluesmen loved and adored him and many of them were devastated by his death. He had a serious drug and alcohol problem and in mid-late 1986 he got clean and sober and remained that way until his death in 1990. Bottom line is this: Stevie was a titan among titans. He stood head and shoulders above his peers and is considered one of the best guitarists ever. I read an article in Rolling Stone not long after he died, where the writer said, "If Hendrix is king, Stevie is the only true heir to the throne". After watching Stevie play Voodoo Child behind his back at the Nashville show, I tend to believe that had Hendrix been in the audience, he would've been the first to stand and give Stevie a raucous ovation. 🎸🐐

Here's another old school Texas blues guitar player Stevie followed in more ways than one.. Johnny Winter, live in 1970 in London I believe, a guitar player every guitar player should hear. And if you look in this video, Johnny's bass player is the same bass player backing up SRV ten years later, Tommy Shannon.. Breaking strings for him was like the rest of us breaking dried spaghetti. He once accidentally broke the neck of a friend's acoustic guitar he was playing. You should find his live version of "Third Stone From The Sun".
The keyboardist is Reece Wynans-he looked really different in Tin Pan Alley-grew beard: he is amazing and stil plays with Joe Bonamassa. Drummer Chris Layton is drummer for Kenny Wayne Shepherd (whose dad introduced him to Stevie when he was a boy-and launched Kenny’s blues/rock career).Stevie’s brother Jimmie taught Stevie and passed on his guitars when he moved up. Jimmie is extremely talented, used to shred with best of them, then went more conservative. Sometimes SRV and Jimmie did shows together-were playing together with Eric Clapton the night of the helicopter crash. Everyone said Stevie was on fire that second night at the ski resort. That suggestion of “Pipeline “ on double neck guitar shows both of them playing the same guitar-unreal imagine growing up in their tiny house with that talent😎

Stevie's guitar tech, Rene Martinez, is still out there working with guitarists. Rene is one of the best in the business. He was a genius at figuring out string sets for Stevie that would give him that rich tone he always wanted but wouldn't tear open his fingers. At one point Stevie was playing 13s on his high E string. He'd tune down a half step and play with high action. If some random guitarist picked up Stevie's rig and tried to play, they break their fingers.
He was always blowing strings bc B.B.King told him he needed to go to smaller gage strings. He was used to playing with heavier gage. Enjoyed it...thx!!
Oh man you need to watch “Riviera paradise” its from the same performance as this one (Austin, Texas) and the guy on the keyboard just sends you into a cloud of white with the way he's able to play I also just noticed in Rivera paradise he's using the same guitar as the one you have right behind you The caramel colored one
Glad to see you enjoying yourself and like your reaction/perspectives. "Mary Had a Little Lamb", yeah the nursery rhyme, from the same show since you commented about the keyboard player, Reece Winans, also and "Cold Shot", same show is another of my favorites and a killer tune.
As a side note, the guitar tech who made that seamless guitar switch happen was Rene Martinez. He came out of retirement to work with John Mayer. Check out the video John Mayer "200 guitars" to see him up close.
Mr. Piano Man Reese that's playing there..... just happens to be Mr Guitar man Joe Bonamassas piano player now ! And he's still Dead Spot On ! Simply one of the best. Hey Mr Hidden in a Hoodie I know if anyone knows this you do. Every Mega Great Musician They are ... well most of them are some of the humblest people in the world and they show it on stage. I saw you point that out on SRVs video of Life Without You and your the first person I've ever seen or heard give credit to a musician and really mean it. You can listen to the wind blow every day but they don't mean nothing they say and it's just something they throw in there to make people think they care . I believe in giving credit where credit is due and you have certainly got my respect and without measure ! Stay true to who you are and the rest of Life will fall in line for you.

Jack Scott in his comment pretty well said it all, however Stevie Did have a sound like some of his elder blues rivals. I can hear a lot of Albert Kings (and others) licks and phrasing in Stevie's playing but yes, he found a higher level. Thank god he lived at the right time while those legends were still around to lend influence and encouragement, otherwise the Stevie we love might have sounded much different. btw, check out Stevie Ray and Albert King in studio doing Texas Flood.
He was heavy into drugs as most musicians were at that time, he got clean and recorded his last studio album “Crossfire” then he and his brother recorded an album together but he was killed before he could see that one released.
Yeah, and the fact that he'd gotten clean, and his last album was so good ... no telling what-all he and all of us missed out due to that damned helicopter crash.
Stevie was support act one time for Clapton, Clapton was watching from the side of the stage, when Stevie finished, Eric Clapton was heard saying. ''How the fuck am I going to follow that!
Man, you gotta check out anything from the El Mocambo show... some of the best guitar work you'll ever see will come from that one show alone. Little wing and Texas flood are other worldly.

Check out Joe Bonamassa - another great guitarist. He played with BB King when he was 12 years old - so that should tell you something about his skill level.
Trivia: In the early days of Stevie's career, he would oftentimes tear the calluses off of his fingers, so he would superglue them back on so that he could finish his shows. What can you say? Dude was a badass of epic proportions!
Careful talking smack about the OGs of Blues! Stevie’s listening and he wouldn’t have it. One time he was playing with BB King, showed up to the concert to play, excited to watch BB after his own performance, but was appalled to find they’d put BB OPENING for him. He was so upset. He loved and respected those guys so much. Albert King, BB King, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy. I’ll find some of their songs for you to check out. Love me some SRV!! On some of his songs though, Reese is too much & I lose some of Stevie's guitar. This is one of them...does anyone else feel the same? I am really mostly interested in listening to Stevie! Nothing against Reese's playing as he is terrific.
You relate they've got same outlook as me hearing all the "sounds" "Floyd/Stones/Dylan, lots of many talented guitarist's mate, just Google you Tube, know, and you'll find a ton, from Elmore James to old/new stuff, but the same vibe runs throught The Blues, and I wholeheartedly say that playing his Statocastor, and Hendrix, but I know he wasn't from Texas, but his style had the same ehtic, is what I'm trying g ho say "2 different styles" and both far superior in their field. I rate Stevie Ray Better than Hendrix. Even though Hendrix wad something else too, Stevie wins it for me with his lyrics and his guitar licks, what a loss..Paul.
