Space Station 13 is a game that you're not going to understand unless you play. It's not a game you can learn by watching or reading, and it is a game you certainly won't master in your first day, week or month. Space station 13 is one of the most insane experiences of my life, a game that has occupied my time for over a decade now. Space station 13 is the roguelike of roguelikes for me, the most wonderful piece of human-created madness, and certainly on equal footing with dwarf fortress in terms of sheer complexity. Please join in as I embark again, for just another day on space station 13.

I've learned from an old video from here, the best way to enjoy ss13 is to have a gimmick. Tex has his pre-shift shitpost, Tombodil eats everything.... I decided to start every shift as a mutant. It's fun, except when I end up Swedish.

I like to turn empty maintenance areas into finished rooms, with flooring and tables and comfy chairs and vending machines. Give cargo a place to hang out and eat pizza, that sort of thing.

I used to play captain like a crazy person. Like poorly disguising myself as the chef to hide from ops, spending the station budget on snakes to defend the bridge, convincing the CoS to take part in a political marriage with the xenomorph queen and getting blown up by centcom on arrival. love it

@@Ozymandias2x Got roped into a guerilla interior decorator squad once. Breaking into places where we shouldn't be and making them look nicer. Sadly it all fell apart when we accidentally broke into a room somebody had filled with enough plasma pressure to blow half the station apart...kind of ruined the carpet.

The QM was clueless in this one. "We're sending you tons of money through the PTL." Later in the round, the QM says, "Did somebody want to send me something?" Also later, "There's something burning." Not to mention how people seem to gravitate towards engineering when it is at its most dangerous. On a side note, seeing petawatts for the first time was definitely an experience. I didn't know the engine could reach levels of madness like that.

Been watching a lot of your older SS13 videos lately (2016-18 ish) so this is perfect timing. This and the silly bits like Far Cry 5 With a Cop and Fireteam whiskey are my favorite kinds of content.

2014-2017 was the golden era of /tg/, one of my favorite servers. It will never be the same, but then, it was ALMOST PERFECT. I mean that in every way. Tiny, tiny things would have made it near, 100% perfect as a game. We shall not see its like again, nor its magic. But every time I got on and recorded on /tg/, it was god, damn magic.

goon engineering always reminds me of when i tried to learn to do anything except mining and cargo. someone set a hell burn that did real well until too many of us lost limbs to arc flash to weld the pipes back together. good times good times. Stay relatively sane internet Tex guy.

I'll be honest, i love this game. But I forget the keybinds when i take breaks. I was playing Colonial, my SL asked me to throw a grenade, adn i repled I have one but I don;t know how to throw it and instead of telling me the keybind.. just wrote a novel telling me how I should learn all teh keybinds before I play. telling me Im fuckign retarded. Well now I still don;t know how to throw an item, but I did arm the grenade and kill us both.

When the admin asked, Well He told me to throw a grenade so I armed it, and started click random buttons. Guess who didn't get a ban, because my actions were considered reasonable at the time. While his actions and the report he sent for me, got him a warning for ooc'ing in IC. the staff memeber told me the keybind took him like 4 seconds

In engineering land, always have mag boots and EV suit? Or just not need an atmosphere, then you just need something to magnet you to the station. And yeah, with the PTL, you just feed all the station's spare power through it. The measurement unit you're looking for when calculating your money is either going to be GJ, or kWh based. The difference you're using between the PTL input and output ends up buffering in the laser until the power generation stops being able to keep up, after that, the buffer starts draining and keeps making you money even when the reactor can't keep up.

this is the kind of project that would be daunting for an inexperienced player. I mean sure you can come on and just roleplay as a picky customer at the burger joint, but almost nobody is going to know how to set up and balance a set of devices to do crazy shit like this. Is there anything in Engineering a person can do without knowing advanced mechanics like this ;)

Super long delayed answer, but there are several versions/servers of SS13 floating around, each with their variants. Goonstation is a specific code base, a pretty popular one. It's uh.... it's just always chaos

I’m probably going to get flamed for this, but I’ve joined the test player community for SS14, which is basically a way of getting SS13 onto steam. It’s pretty good. Apart from the tired “fascist psychopath takes a sec job” thing, which happens a lot. I normally play Barman. SS13 intimidates me, to be honest, for exactly the things you say - I suspect that some folks might be a little bit gate-keepy about it and not like new folks joining. I’d like to try, but the fear is strong in me.

I also felt a bit intimidated by ss13 but I've been doing exclusively nothing jobs while I figure out the controls, etc. Unfortunately most rounds tend to be a troll show. People stealing plasma tanks or blowing up parts of the station with mining charges. A lot of trolling seems to go unpunished

Learning the game isn't HARD, it just requires a small amount of sustained effort, and sustained effort is beyond many members of the "Every game should have an Easy Mode For Tiny Babies Like Me", "Get Gud is a horrible offensive phrase how dare you" generation.
