------------------------------------- Key Timestamps---------------------------------
10:53 Stan got his pro card in body building in his 40s.
15:25 Stan doesn’t manipulate shape through water and salt.
16:17 For women, being a very light weight does not translate into placing in body building competition.
17:52 There is a reduction in resting metabolic rate from long term caloric restriction. Salt, fructose, and iodine improve metabolism.
19:01 Stan has his clients eat lean red meat for their protein source.
20:59 The common diet focus is on macros, not micros, but micronutrients are in great abundance and have complicated beneficial interactions.
21:39 Stan uses sleep, food and training to manipulate body composition and strength.
23:44 When you do chronic cardio, your body will rid itself of muscle not used for the task as a way of being efficient.
26:06 If you are lifting at 80% of your capacity, your body does not have sufficient stimulus for adaptation.
27:00 Optimal hypertrophy training for body builders is twice a day, 40 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night. This provides stimulus and avoids over fatigue.
29:54 Stan’s athletes do not use caffeine.
31:19 Sleep hygiene is one of the most important things that Stan addresses.
33:50 Change requires consistency.
40:24 Long term, does your weight loss cause deficiencies, loss of strength or health?
41:13 Keep foods containing calcium and magnesium in the diet.
42:29 Fat adaptation works well for endurance athletes. Glycogen is needed for strength.
42:51 It is more efficient to have glycogen in the muscles when you are in training.
43:27 Fruit raises metabolism, energy levels and body temperature, but does not spike insulin.
45:16 About half of hard training athletes are iodine deficient.
47:58 Fruit at almost any level of intake is protective of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality.
53:42 As the top of the food chain, you are impacted by everything the animals below you ate.
55:55 Your recovery takes a lot of sleep, a lot of food and proper hydration.
58:12 You need to salt your food. You cannot get enough salt out of a drink.
01:04:55 Strength is a barometer of health.
01:09:02 Three post-meal vigorous 10 minute walks each day are recommended.
01:27:23 To make your body regenerative, you need to create a stimulus with appropriate recovery.
01:31:21 Stan’s elevator pitch: There should be more health education and illness prevention.
Thanks for watching this far! Leave a nice comment and I'll be sure to write ya back!

Those little 10-minute walks are highly underrated. Ever since I got my first dog, 15 years ago now, I've been doing it twice a day. I'm so glad someone convinced me it was important for the dog, because it's made a huge difference for me too. I do a lot of other things too, at least some of the time, but there is tremendous value in setting that minimum baseline for activity. Really helps me to maintain the mindset of being active and of using activity to maintain overall wellness both physically and mentally.

I watched this months ago, and it just appeared again in my suggested vids tonight. This vid honestly helped my weight loss and health transformation. Dropped from 223.5 to 160Lbs in 5 months and having great gym and great blood lab work results. When Stan mentioned iodine deficiency slowing peoples metabolism and adding cranberry juice to help fix the deficiency. I tried it immediately and it immediately helped, then later instead of juice, I would throw a few cranberries into my oatmeal. The sensation in the throat went away, and my weight loss plateau was broke. I am 53 and have been on thyroid meds for 40 years, I wish I knew sooner about iodine deficiency. My thyroid meds have been cut down to half, and I think they will be cut again. This is a great channel. Thank You Mike and Stan.

Women need to listen to this. The ones who only do cardio and the ones who are “afaraid” to build muscles. Working in the corporate fitness industry for gyms like NYSC, Equinox, LA Fitness, Crunch. It’s AMAZING the mindset women STILL have in the gym. Eat almost nothing, train 2hrs. It’s so frustrating and sad.

VinnyLogz I've been training for 21 years and have been to dozens of gyms myself. I've never seen many women work hard. I'm going off the rule, not the exception. They maybe there doing a workout but they don't push themselves. If they aren't changing then they aren't working out hard or long. Their diets must suck also. If you lower calories and workout for hours you will change. That's reality.

Basically bro dieting. Chicken, protein shakes and broccoli. Couple weeks in I had terrible kidney pain. I want a diet to help with weight loss and just general wellness. I was a fan of stan for awhile so I went ahead and followed his diet. I'm down 30 lbs and the kidney pain is gone. I assume low salt was what caused it. Much respect to stan. Awesome interview also !

I had horrible post exercise headaches. Headaches from bending and lifting. Etc. I saw so many nurses and chiropractors to help. I thought cortisone injections in the neck and manipulations would cure it. It turned out it made things worse. Salt!! Adding iodized salt took care of it!! God bless you, Stan!! And thanks again for all of your help.

This is probably the most intelligent approaches to nutrition, performance, and health that I’ve witnessed for quite some time ... and surprisingly from a bodybuilder. Stan seems super smart. Great interview.

There's no rule that says a person has to be below a certain IQ to qualify for a gym membership. Talk about believing in stereotypes! Maybe the fact you believe most bodybuilders are probably a bit stupid is a reflection on you?

Fair enough Robert. I first joined a gym in 1980 and over the years have had the pleasure of meeting some of the most nicest, most interesting, smart and accomplished people know. Of course you meet the flip side but they usually the lack the discipline and application to last long.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned avoiding brown rice because of the phytic acid content. The best thing white rice has going for it is its unusually low phytic acid content and if you include the rice bran that gets ruined.

Most of Stan's diet advice is in line with Ray Peat. Look him up if you want to dig into the science behind it all.
@jlushefski
@jlushefski 5 лет назад
Ray Peat is a proponent of coffee though. Overall he has some mainstream controversial ideas like being pro sugar, anti fish oil, pro saturated fat. It's important to understand Peat's ideas in a larger context and not get obsessed with one sentence or opinion, which most people do. Ray is absolutely one of the best resources on nutrition and health, and you're going to get 100x as much information/scientific depth as you would from a "nutritionist," coach, MD author, etc.

Siim Land without enough cardio is how you develop ventricular hypertrophy. Humans evolved into the longest distance and animal. High intensity cardio has its place, but you need 30-60 minutes of sustained cardio for a healthy heart.
