I was a teenager when the original star trek began. I loved it, but all my peers pooh poohed it. It later became popular in reruns. I've watched every episode of every star trek series. I guess I'm alone on very much liking season 2 of Discovery.. I don't like the "wokeness", but it wove new stories for each episode in with continuing story line across the season. Sets and production quality was excellent. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Think of a space alien seeing it and original series fir the furst time. No comparison. I'm impressed and can excuse a few inconsistencies of science and character. I'm reminded of the E E Doc Smith "Skylark of Valeron" book series. Lots of technical advances move the plots quickly. But it doesn't get bogged down in long explanations or technicality explained. I like Discovery a lot!
@bennyjeh787
@bennyjeh787 3 года назад
See, now that makes sense. I mean, ok... This is science FICTION. But you still have to have the science make sense to make it believable. Yes, it's set in the 23rd, 24th century (depending on which series you're watching), so you can make up a lot of the sciency stuff to make it work with the story. But even the made up stuff needs to be grounded in reality, or it's just not going to make sense. One thing Star Wars has going for it is that it all takes place in "a galaxy far far away". So you can do whatever you want with it (*cough cough* mediclorians *cough cough*). But with Star Trek it's already been established that it's the Milky Way galaxy (or some version there of, depending on which mirror universe episode of which series you're watching). Warp drive (and/or transwarp drive), slipstream, wormholes, impulse speeds, hell even time travel have a basis within the established setting. Now it's an engine that runs on.... mushrooms? Spore drive... Yeah, someone was running on spores when they came up with this shit. Visually it's kindda cool. It does kind of look like a movie. But I'd be more willing to give it another shot if it wasn't Star Trek. I'd be more willing to give it another shot if it was a non-trek show set in a different galaxy or universe. But for me, having grown up with Trek, having some understanding of the basics of the science used in the fiction of Trek I just find it unwatchable.
@hitomisalazar4073
@hitomisalazar4073 3 года назад
I think for me it's just a matter of taste. Galactica Reboot became the norm for Sci-Fi after it it. Everything from how the cinematography is handled (dark, minimalistic, a lot of strange angles and open spaces), to how the writing is done. And me? I was kind of alone in really, really not liking Galactica Reboot. Most people loved it. So it makes sense as the template to try to follow. But it also makes sense that for me, every lesser copy of Galactica Reboot that comes out, be it Star Gate Universe to Star Trek Discovery... I'm going to like it less and less. I didn't care for the original, why would I care for the watered down retread? I think its a shame that too much of the talk of Star Trek under Kurtzman has been about fiddly bits that frankly don't matter so much. Like Discovery's ships looking different and far more technologically advanced than a 1960s show. Or things like Spore Drives and what not. I think the bigger problem, and the one that really holds it down? Just the tonal shift from the optimism that Star Trek across its various series always had. From TOS through TAS to TNG, DS9, Voyager, and yes, still Enterprise. To things like what Discovery opened with. With the renown pacifist Vulcan ambassador from TOS's Journey to Babel saying: You gotta shoot Klingons on sight. To things like in Picard, characters giving Picard shit for being wealthy while they have to live in a camper trailer in the desert, impoverished. It's just that sort of slap to the face tonally. From the optimism of say, Captain Archer of Enterprise saying: "We can't be afraid of the wind Travis. Take us ahead, Warp 4", and having this upbeat moment of humanity's growth and potential, to Picard having people say: "... Romulans are our enemy, how dare you not let them be rendered extinct!".

They do over analyze. They’re absolutely right in that statement. The problem is they don’t need to nitpick and overanalyze to be frustrated with the terrible story of this or picard. It’s surface level bad. Diving deeper just exposes it on a more fundamental level to those who may see this and realize what honest fans want and crave is legitimately good stories. And the main issue there is there isn’t a huge market for that currently, which is why all your favourite major franchises are churning out shit. And remakes are in abundance, studios got fat and lazy. The only option left is to fight with your wallet. Stop bankrolling the shit.

@@L4nd0C4lr1s14n No, I disagree. Part of the fun of this is they analyze it. Yes, on the surface level you have to be a moron not to see all the stupid inconsistencies and have failed science in grade school BADLY. However, it's quite enjoyable to pick the corpse down to the bone. For a SCIENCE fiction show, the writers sure don't give a damn about science. They don't care even a LITTLE bit about getting science right, even on a completely superficial level. They don't care about having a coherent plot, they don't even care about having human beings act like actual human beings. The ONLY thing in the current incarnations of Star Trek (or Star Wars for that matter) are mindless, stupid, action scenes, and the LEAST AMOUNT OF EFFORT POSSIBLE to make an excuse for yet another mindless, stupid, action scene.

@BLAIR M Schirmer For me, the Red Flag was how shoddy and directionsless the CGI was. Lots of blur to hide that some ships weren't modelled in high detail, terrible camera, two different phaser effects within 2 episodes (both bad), no shield effects upon hits. I thought the Battle of the Binary Stars was bad because it was their first space CGI and they had to rush it, but the final battle of the Season 2 was just a trainwreck of awful ideas stitched together . The capital ships were sitting still and not maneuvering at all, not shooting at one another, no classic tactical Star Treky feel and the swarms were awful, AFWUL. I also thought they learned their lessons with Star Trek: Beyond that people hate that kind of crap because it's completely impossible to follow and uninteresting, but apparently no. The final battle was a stinking pile of MESS and indicates that the team behind the CGI of the current and upcoming Star Trek series is FUBAR.

@Hanzer-ns5bh
@Hanzer-ns5bh 4 года назад
There is a brilliant screencap somewhere on the internet concerning the difference between something smartly written and something written by dumb people trying to write a smart scene/character. The examples used respectively were No Country For Old Men and the Sherlock Holmes series. In No Country, the antagonist of the story is smart. He checks into a hotel room at the same hotel where the protagonist is staying at, so he can get a layout of the room-- places to hide, possible cover, nooks where certain Macguffins can be stashed, etcetera. He breaks locks with a pneumatic cattle gun. He creates distractions, investigates leads, manipulates people, stalks and hunts... He's a predator on the prowl, and he exhibits clear signs of intellect, however craven. He's also not the only smart character in the movie. The actions these characters take fall in line not only with the movie's internal logic, but also the external logic that a viewer would expect it to abide by (mostly, anyway). In Sherlock Holmes, the antagonist/s would (and do) pull off any and all sorts of off-the-wall chicanery that one might more easily expect of a Marx Brothers skit or Leslie Nielsen flick. Foolish, outlandish Matryoshka doll gambit-upon-gambit escapades to fuel simple criminal wants are easily thwarted by the omniscient titular character, as though he were a magician revealing to the public how a fraud faked a seance. Boom, cut to bad guy being pushed into a squad car and Sherlock flippantly scoffing at the whole thing in disinterest. The alleged genius of any involved are announced through dialogue, regardless of the inanity of the situations or persons presented. The characters only perform actions that move the plot as the plot demands, instead of the story allowing their organic actions to form intrigue and a greater narrative thread. Nothing new has been said, and the puppets are put away till the next show. TL;DR: Smart people will write smartly and it will feel like a natural progression of the characters and story. Dumb people will continue to write smart people as though they were sorcerors twisting reality to their whim, because that's almost exactly how they percieve intelligent people.

Burnham saying “Find that person who seems farthest from you and reach for them, let them guide you” is supposed to be a reference to Spock’s subsequent relationship with Kirk, who is the “farthest from Spock” in temperament. It’s maddening, because it makes no sense in the context of the show. It only makes sense if you know Spock later learns to trust Kirk. And it’s retconning that trust to be caused, in part, by Burnham’s influence. It’s just terrible. Terrible writing, but also terrible in how it’s trying to gain an unearned place in classic Star Trek by crediting Burnham with creating that iconic friendship that didn’t need her.

Yeah this is an infuriating trend in this new generation of prequel shows. Kenobi has a lot of this too, where another character plants a tracker on Leia and lets them think they got away. So it retroactively rewrites the lore to say that Vader didn't come up with the plan, it was this unseen, unknown character who he stole the idea from, and Leia only knew that she was being tracked because she'd gone through this before when she was like 9. I think the old trek technobabble doesn't really even classify as technobabble. They used pretty basic words that would give anybody an idea of what they were trying to convey, and that idea was always conveyed effectively. "We can modulate the deflector dish to send varying frequencies and try to communicate with this alien" is easily understood as "we have found a way to communicate with this alien." It doesn't take much thinking to figure out what all of the technobabble is trying to say. Meanwhile, in Discovery, they just throw a bunch of words together and hope nobody is actually paying attention to it. There's no substance to the technobabble. It exists solely as filler to pad out the writing and make it sound a lot more "high tech" than it needs to be. Classic example of saying a lot without saying anything at all.

It's the TV/Film dialogue equivalent of a "live, laugh, love" poster.

Modern Star Trek is basically what stupid people think good sci-fi is: pretty lights and futuristic gadgets to make people think something interesting is happening, people spouting random science concepts that sounds cool but pays no consideration to actual the actual science behind them, and sloppy moral and philosophical diatribes/allegories about modern day problems.
@PolishNomad95
@PolishNomad95 4 года назад
@ Never watched the original series and I think TNG is the best iteration. And I think you're mistaking science fiction with science fantasy. Science fiction tries to fit within some realm of scientific plausibility while science fantasy treats science like a magic system that does not need to adhere to any of our modern scientific understanding. Star Trek is science fiction, Star Wars is science fantasy. And good sci-fi CAN have allegories/allusions to modern problems, but what makes them interesting is how such problems might change or stay the same in a futuristic setting, not just a blatant, lazy copy-paste of some contemporary problem.

Well nerd culture became fashionable, so then a bunch of people who aren't nerds showed up, and they way outnumbered actual nerds, so the creators started catering to this new audience. I'd say Iron Man was probably the beginning of it all, thrusting comic books into the mainstream. Then you had kind of a resurgence of Star Wars, which then both of these got picked up by Disney, which then over saw the hollowing out of the material so as to sell it to the widest audience possible, however this meant that the product was not quality and for some reason people don't seem to understand that art isn't fast food and you shouldn't strive to create the entertainment equivalent of McDonald's.

@TimThomason
@TimThomason 5 лет назад
@@Strawberry92fs Star Trek VI came out during TNG's fifth season, and incorporated backstory developed in TNG, not the other way around. Throughout Season 1 and into Season 2, the Klingons are referred to as "members of the Federation" by Worf, Wesley, and Picard, although in hindsight they must've meant something different than face value. Multiple writers wanted to develop Klingon culture as an exotic warrior race, building on TOS and more especially Star Trek III's portrayal, but having them as another Federation member didn't allow them the storyline possibilities they sought. Heart of Glory in Season 1 was the first crack in Klingon membership, before A Matter of Honor and later Sins of the Father totally annihilated the possibility of the Klingon Empire no longer existing. In-universe, what you say is the truth, just like now we know the Klingons went to War with the Federation in Star Trek: Discovery's era, despite several implications that they never had a full-scale war in previous seasons. Sometimes, we have to work around problematic exchanges in older canon to justify their meaning.

Thomas Ollister my favorite sci fi writers are Ursula le Guin, Frank Herbert, and Philip K Dick. The Left Hand of Darkness is a brilliant exploration of gender identity, authoritarian government structures, and anthropology. Dune is the quintessential sci fi novel. It’s a study in ecology, political subterfuge, and a great critique of heroism. If you want to go older, the Foundation books by Asimov break down everything wrong with the Great Man idea of history
@meruscales

@meruscales

Thomas Ollister sci fi might not be right for you then. Foundation beat Lord of the Rings as greatest fantasy series of all time. Dune and Left Hand of Darkness are regarded as the two greatest sci fi novels of all time. Blade Runner and Total Recall are both Philip K Dick stories. Sci fi has always been about exploring the environments and societies we live in. The first science fiction book, Frankenstein, is a feminist work. H G Wells was a major socialist. Gender, for example, is a key element to human society, and it’s fascinating to question and challenge our relationship with it. Exploring race and gender are a big part of the original Star Trek. If those ideas are too much for you, then Michael Bay has sci fi movies called “Transformers” that I think might be more your speed.

Altered Carbon is so “hereto” it features fully nude women in almost every episode, but I guess since not every character is a man it must be too “feminist” for you.

When that character said "this is the power of math people" ....I cringed so hard , I almost collapsed into myself. There's so many stupid moments like that in the show , plus all the in your face , out of place women's empowerment dialog they throw in there..........as the audience , are we supposed to believe this is set in a future universe where high level science and math is known by everyone , specially everyone in star fleet, and equal rights have already been dealt with centuries earlier, but for some reason people are still talking like they are fighting for equal rights and education ? Shows like this and others make me question what writers nowadays think about their audience , who do they think they are writing for and how stupid do they think their audience is . As a Star Trek fan specially TNG , I'd like to think the people who watch this show are already well aware of social issues, so by writing dialog like that, they are preaching to the choir and subsequently pissing them off by treating them like infants and mentally taking them out of the universe. This is what was clever about the writing in TNG , they would deal with these issues and many more in the storylines in much more subtle and believable ways within that universe. They preferred to hold a mirror up to the human audience member by showing our current failures and lack of human evolution through that of the shortcomings of a fictional race of aliens that maybe in a closer intellectually evolved place to what we are now. One of the other things that really bugs me about the show is I have zero emotional attachment to any character on the show , so when they are doing these overly dramatic moments where I am supposed to feel really bad for a character, or when someone is dying, I feel nothing at all, and to me that's usually a good gauge of how involved i've become with a show , which clearly on this show is , not much emotional involvement at all.

Yes, could you imagine how you would feel if LT CMDR Geordie or Beverly Crusher suddenly died on the Enterprise? However, here a BRIDGE crew member died, thr augmented cyber human, and I felt nothing. The single most mistake this series did was focus only on Michael Burnam. Her acting, mouth gapping, surprised Pikachu face got old real fast. Instead they should focus more on other characters. In TNG and beyond they had entire episodes where the focus wasn't on the Captain or the ship but the side characters and their dilemmas. I could name every BRIDGE crew member on TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Here it wasn't until Captain Pike's roll call that we get a name (without rank).

Yeah, it's so out of place. They should never mention race or sex at all. It should be such a non-issue that no one even pays it a second thought. That would be true progressive.

This is probably my favourite thing on RLM; Rich and Mike talking about Star Trek.

Mixed Bag Clips Even if you sweep them all up, more particles just pop into existence in the vacuum of space. Yeah, they are a problem.

It's better than space fungus and water bear-pigs that snort it.
